Whose 97 on patriots? He required double teams that allowed other edge rushers to only have to win their 1 on 1 battles to get pressure on the QB. Great work by 97, he was getting a ton of push against the double teams..he is reall physically strong

#97 is Branch. Nice catch on that, I did not notice it.

This might be an interesting theme to look for in other plays. Maybe whatever issues put Branch in the doghouse have been resolved.

Two plays showing the responsibility they gave Bademosi. It was tough to see the 2nd half due to the fog on game pass but he stuck with his man most of the night. I didn't see him beat soundly/toasted once. If I was better with screen recording/gifs I'd upload some clips.

BB bracketed Julio in the red zone nearly every time. The other two CBs on the other side held up pretty well. It would have taken some dimes from Ryan to complete them. Very similar to the gameplan vs. the Steelers in the AFCCG.

Just to show what we're up against.

Middle of the first quarter.

Middle of the 2nd Quarter:

Middle of the 3rd Qtr:

Middle of the 4th Qtr:

M. Butler, I wonder if he was blitzing again. Or maybe something tipped him off that it was a run:

Based on where Butler was (already in the backfield) at the time of the hand off, gotta expect that he was blitzing all the way.

It'd be interesting to see a zoomed out shot to see how the coverage initially dealt with Butler's man if he was schemed to blitz on that play. If the other DB's weren't reacting to cover Butler's man, then maybe Butler read something pre-snap and made an educated guess (which turned out right).

Looks like a cover 2. A lot of communication from the defense pre snap and I think McCourty switched to cover Butler's guy. Everyone else was on the LOS.

That's what I saw as well- think we did mostly cover 2 man with pattern matching zone underneath. Kept corners on the same side throughout the game for simplicity's sake.

I think this reception to cooks is interesting for a couple of reasons:

1. The Cooks' route vs. the coverage: Even pre-motion, I think Brady can tell that the Falcons are in a zone. They don't have any DB's directly lined up across from Cooks and 'dola (it is a bit strange that they went to this directly following a timeout, given how tend to kill zone coverage from spread formations). In response to the motion from 'dola, the Falcons safeties shift toward the motion side. This opens a hole in the zone for Cooks' seam route.

2. The throw from Brady: In the audio (included in the clip if you un-mute it on bottom left) Collinsworth describes how he thought the throw from Brady was excellent. He had to throw a dart to split the safety and the corner playing deep zones. Throwing it low allowed Cooks to make the catch without taking it hit from the safety. I am curious if Brady and Cooks agree with that assessment.

Yep. The motion was pretty much key to open up that little hole in the zone.

What I dont get though is what Alford (#23) was doing hugging the sideline so much. Yes, I understand that White (?) is ready for a dump off split out wide on the left but the moment that Dola motioned and shifted the entire coverage of the Falcons Alford needed to be closer to Cooks potential route. Beasley (#44) was still close enough to White to slow him down if Brady went for a dump off instead.

As it played out Alford somehow hesitated between Cooks and White and then got nobody. In fact Cooks could have just ran a go route (which I guess was not an option) and had an easy TD on this here.

It is kinda funny how an entire defensive scheme can fall apart if you find that one weak link in the lineup that you can just pick on again and again.

If you're looking at the replay you could ask if Brady's throw was too low and too far to the right. But if this was a called curl into the gap of the zone coverage then it was a good throw and catch. Tough to tell which it was without knowing what the call was. Either way "First Down!"

Two questions: thoughts on the D with and without Hightower? Thoughts on Branch? (Looked energetic and strong in the couple of snaps I noticed him.)

Here is my impression on the Hightower part. It will be hard to find evidence for it because of fog and different broadcast angles between beginning and end of the game.

If I recall correctly, Hightower was out for around the final quarter or so. At that point in the game we began to shift defensive strategies to softer zones, giving them shallow passes in the middle of the field. I think this strategy made sense; the only way we lose the game at that point is if Atlanta scores quickly. It took them 5 out of 9 minutes for them to score on that final drive. We made it an onside kick game, because we had the clock on our side up 3 scores.

Because of this shift in strategy, it is hard to know how much of an impact losing Hightower had. We gave up some runs on that 5 minute drive, but those runs were eating up so much clock it was helping us.

Do we know when Hightower went out? A better drive to look at would be the one that ends ends with that crap end around. Even on that series we were playing softer IIRC:

Was Hightower out for the series before?

After watching the last two weeks my perception is Alan Branch is back. He seemed to get a decent push up the middle to force Matty to slide around.

Now if only Marsh could have contained the outside....

I think Tom screwed up. He should have thrown a bomb towards the sidelines. Would have been a bigger gain if not a TD

Might be that Cooks and TB12 aren't quite there with the non-verbal communication.

When I get time I want to see if he was held.
