That was the plan. They didn't want Jones, Galloway and Tate rolling for 500 yards.
Yea I probably should have been clearer or worded it different.

The plan is pretty much always the same on offense in terms of making so&so beat you dinking & dunking, take away the big play.

Here you can effectively eliminate Davis/Clayborn w a single, at times even a TE. Double the ss DT & you have big lanes.

This also allows teams to get their OL to the 2nd level way too easy. We've seen this now for 2 games.

Looks like a variation of the diamond front we've ran in the past except KVN is where HT was. It's secondary to the way we're getting manhandled though.
We’ve typically run 4 dL and 2 lb.
Taking out a de and adding Roberts or Bentley makes us smaller.
It’s not like we got eaten alive against the run, we just got run on bad enough that they stayed in good down and distances

That is what is killing the D...first and second down making 3rd and short most of the time.

That being said, I feel like we're in 3rd and long situations somewhat frequently. We just literally NEVER stop on em. If we stopped every 3rd and long, or at a reasonable rate, a lot of drives would be gone.

Has anyone noticed this?

I don’t think that’s accurate. I don’t think there have been many.

Looked it up.
We have faced 9 3rd and 10 or more and allowed 1 first down this season.
On 3rd and 4-9 we have faced 21 and allowed 9 conversions. So 3rd and 4+ is 10/30.

Maybe my eyes have fooled me, I guess it seems that, since every time it's 3rd and long and the other team converts, those stick in my head more. There have certainly been enough to make note of the fact that they're always converted haha.

Reminds me of the 2011 offense. I was literally afraid of 3rd and long.

Well there was 1, so your belief isn’t consistent with reality.

More focused on the 3rd 4-9, I guess that doesn't count as "long". Where it's almost half. Is that normal?

The issue is that the defense hasn't forced opposing offenses into enough 3rd and longs

Your eyes have only sort of follicles you. NE is way down at the bottom of 5he league in defensive 3rd down percentage. And last night they were particularly bad on the key defensive series of the game. Pats close the score to 13-10 with the Brady TD to White. Lions start the next drive at the 25. Wise comes around the L tackle for a nice sack making it 2nd and 17. Lions get 8 yards on 2nd leaving them with a 3rd and 9. A 3rd down stop gives the Pats the ball back in great field position. Pats give up 17 yards on 3rd and 9! Stafford had a completely clean pocket and plenty time to throw. They rushed 4 and one was a linebacker starting 5 yards off the ball. No one even brought pressure from the outside on the L tackle side. I don’t know what the defensive rush package was but scheme wise it had no chance. Way too easy for a 3rd and 9. Lions went on to score a TD to make it 20-10 and basically game over.

Here's the first offensive series of the game. 3 and out. Wanted to throw out the first couple of drives to see what went wrong.

Side note: Tell me if you like this format or not. I paused the plays to give a better view of what's going on.

My novice take:

First down: Michel to the right for a five yard gain. Michel lowers his shoulder and gets a nice five yard gain with some help from Devlin and crew.
Second down: Michel to the left, Thuney loses his block on 91 who then blows up the play. 1 yard gain.
Third down: Brady misses Hogan over the middle. He was open. I'm not sure if Brady thought Hogan would stop or not.

Punt.

Looks like Brady threw late and way behind Hogan (who was maybe Brady's 2nd or 3rd read). Nearly a pick. Hogan reached back and broke it up.

I don't see how Hogan logically would've stopped with a guy chasing him from only a couple steps behind. And it appeared that Brady could have led him because there was space in front of Hogan.

Just a bad throw, IMHO.

Snaps (for future reference):

Good to see Cannon getting to the point where he is taking the majority of snaps at tackle. If this continues he should be close to 100% snap count next week.

Looking at that snap count. After Crossen looked lost against Marvin Jones he got pulled right away.

Had Brady hit the outside receiver (Dorsett?) that was wide open on the in-cut, he'd have had the 1st down easily.

I still can't figure out why they didn't use more of those last night..

In the second (or third drive) you will have Dorsett wide open for a first down and Brady overthrows him.

Add in the two idiotic quick snaps on third down that seem to be always stopped, the grounding, the interception and so on and he had one of the worst games of the last 3-4 years.

He might have just been in as sub for JMac or JCJ for a snap anyways. Rest, minor injuryor equipment malfunction. Rarely see BB pull someone after just one snap for performance reasons.

I absolutely agree with this. Probably the biggest problem on our run defense is that players are not extending their arms enough to shed blocks effectively. I saw too many players let themselves get wrapped up.
