If what Mary Cabot says is true, would you still deal Jimmy G.?

  • Yes. I would take whatever I can get, especially if it includes the #12 overall pick

  • Perhaps, but their offer has to include a couple more picks, including a 2nd rounder. Or NO DEAL

  • No. Jimmy G will still be in New England if the compensation does not include multiple 1's

Bravo. Great post.

Miles Garrett is a shiny toy. He's not bringing a championship - look at JJ Watt's rings.

If BB thinks Jimmy G has the chops to be the NEXT GUY, Cleveland or someone else will have to blow him out of the water with an offer, or yes, he'll keep Jimmy as long as he possibly can as QB insurance.

If Cleveland thinks he's the NEXT GUY, they'll hand over the ransom, if they're smart. If they're stubborn, they'll wallow with shiny toys.

And some of their shiny toys are named Watson and Trubisky, and those are very likely to tarnish quickly.

Quality is remembered after price is forgot.

If jg is the next franchise qb then the browns should trade their whole draft for him!

Great stuff. How are they supposed to know whether he is or not from 6 quarters of play? Should theytake the word of the homers here?

You are correct in that no one knows if Jimmy will be gr8.

From what I have seen with the rumored compensation from the Browns though, it looks like the Browns are wanting to buy low so their is no risk to them if he busts, but they get all of the potential upside if Jimmy is the real deal.

For that reason I think maybe higher future picks should be in play based on performance.

That gives Cleveland all of the upside and none of the downside in that trade. No thanks.

How would it be any different than drafting a QB in the draft who has 0 quarters of NFL Play?

Why are trubisky and watson likely to bust? Shiny toy JG is the Real Deal. Laughable stuff. Those picks would be cheaper too salary wise than JG.

Not if the future picks are conditional where the Pats still get picks but they can increase based on Jimmy's performance. Pats already did a deal like that with Philly for Rowe.

So much posturing on both sides.

If this gets done , It's going to happen closer to the draft. It seems Cleveland is willing to give up 12 but not much else. We want two firsts.

I think it ends up being Garropolo and a 4th for #12 plus a Second and Third round pick.

Then reinvest the second or third rounder on our next developmental QB to compete with Brissett.

They wouldn't have to give up multiple number ones and their salaries would be much lower. Delusional homers here think the pats can get whatever they want as jg is clearly superior to anyone in the draft. Not even debateable!

And that's exactly what it comes down to, isn't it?

More than Pats homers are saying that Garoppolo looked the part in the times they saw him. He checked down and ran the offense well. The Hogan bomb TD happened because he saw something.

Does that mean he's the next great QB? Of course not. It's all a crap shoot, but for some young and still-unproven players, the dice are somewhat loaded.

So BB knows what he needs to get to hand over the somewhat-loaded Garoppolo dice, and Cleveland has to decide how loaded they think those dice might be.

Simple fact: every NFL analyst, everyone anyone's talking to, thinks Garoppolo looks substantially more likely as a franchise QB than anything in the draft and guys like Glennon. Maybe he's not as sure a thing as Miles Garrett is at DE, but DE isn't QB.

If BB doesn't get what he wants, he'll keep Jimmy. BB wins superbowls. Cleveland doesn't.

I don't get why everyone is in a panic to trade JG. Has everyone forgotten what it's like to root for a team without a QB? It's the equivalent of neutering your team. As good as the Pats roster is, they would be lucky to get 8 & 8 with Brisset at QB.

Brady is 40. All the guacamole ice cream in the world won't beat Father Time. JG is as good as any under 30 QB in the league and positions the Pats to be perennial SuperBowl contenders for the next decade. Trading him for anything less than another franchise QB would be the dumbest thing the Pats could do.

I can name at least five QBs under 30 who are much better than JG and who I'd take on my team right now over him. Maybe more if I think about it.

I don't think the Pats would make the #1 pick a deal breaker. And the Browns have plenty of second day picks from this year and next year to sweeten the pot. They could offer something like the 12th overall and 33rd overall this year and a second next year that could become a first if Garoppolo hits certain benchmarks.

Rowe is peanuts compared to this potential deal. In your scenario, Pats settle for later picks that can go up? Based on what? Playing time? Performance? That could be tough to judge when you're taking over a 0 win team. I think Jimmy will need a few years as the QB before you'd be able to judge a trade either way.

IMO the Pats can and will accept a deal as simple as 33 this year along with a conditional 1st next year if JG meets certain thresholds otherwise a 2nd as well. That is fair and it's not something the Browns will think is absurd for a guy with less than 90 minutes of meaningful football experience. If that is the case they would have done well, should the intent be not to keep him.

@Froob I found that picture of you and I from the last game we watched together.

I still think the deal can work. It depends what the plan is.

I would be happy with #12 #53 and The titans 2nd round pick next year.

If the Pats want multiple first rounders just package #53 and next years 2nd from the Titans and move back into the first. That would end up giving you #12 and (give or take) #25 for JAG. Not bad at all.

They should take a 1st and a 4th for Garoppolo. Not only is that more than fair fair, but it is poetic justice since those were the picks stolen from us by the sham of a league front office.
