2 things lost in this faux controversy

I think I figured out what really happened since the call was reversed by Riveron and the replay guys in NY. when the ref called in and said," we have a touchdown where the guy juggled the ball while hitting the pylon", the guys in NY naturally assumed it was the Patriots who 'scored' not the Jets.
So their instinctive reaction ( most of them being former Jets employees) was to say" overturn the play, call it a touchback and give them the ball- that will teach them a lesson." They thought they were screwing the Patriots but being the Three Stooges-esque crew that they are ( no disrespect intended to Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp and the two Joes) they messed it up and hurt the Jets....

That being said, I think they got the call right.....

I'll never understand why what we just saw was a touchback, but the play below was not:

NEVER UNDERSTAND?

Two words for you: "In Denver"

Subtitled: NYJFL refs dont read their own rulebook (when fhey dont want to); but the fieldkeeping manual is punitive!

There is controversy because people feel the Patriots got the benefit of a sketchy call.

And many people feel that way because Dan Fouts (1) doesn't know what he's taking about; (2) is hostile towards the Patriots; (3) calls Patriots games on CBS as a form of petty torment to Patriots fans by a NY based network.

If Butler had a Madden rating, he'd probably only be an 85. He's good but not great.

But if there was a skill rating for not giving up on a play, he'd have a 99.

The pylon only matters in the sense that it establishes he scored, not out at the 2" line. My point is where was the fumble? there was no fumble. Ball never hit the ground, therefore he never lost possession. No different than if he tossed it to himself from hand to hand as he crossed the GL. Are you saying that because Butler touched it, that makes it a fumble?

if a punt/kick returner calls a fair catch, and bobbles the ball so that its in the air in front of him after initially touching it, you can tackle him w/o breaking the rules

...because its considered a fumble...you can play hot potato w/ a ball for 50 yards, and even if it never touches the ground, its a fumble...

ASJ lost control momentarily just before the goal line and regained possession as he landed on the pilon. Calls like this make the NFL almost unwatchable. Calls like the non call on the PI against Gronk in the first half do as well. But this was bad bad call
It was the right call....end of story.

We and all NFL players know the rules. Rules are like laws and should always be enforced to the letter of the law or rule

If someone gets a citation for failing to stop at a "Stop" sign, they didn't get screwed. They get what the rule calls for

Very interesting, I thought they were both simply arguing that his knee was down but you can see how emphatic Butler was about it. Didn't he even put his hands on the referee while arguing it?

Good on Malcolm.

That's what I thought at the time - - that he was putting hands on the ref and I was concerned he would be suspended.

However, if you watch the replay, the ref trips over Harmon's leg (Harmons was on the ground) and fell right into Butler, so Malcolm was off the hook.

.

It was and Belichick gave him credit for that in his presser. Even stated how Butler adamantly told him on the sidelines when he didn't know it originally.

My concern was that it looked like Butler was making contact with the ref and I was concerned he was getting suspended. Replay showed that the ref stumbled and fell into him at the beginning.

.
this confirms ref was with namath before the game.

there is zero controversy, though......the correct call was made

the outrage is because the Pats won, nothing else
Naturally no outrage over the two ******** holding calls on the DL son run plays. The Pats are literally the only team I’ve ever seen get called for that.

If they made the same call (and they should have) against Champ Bailey in the 2005 playoffs the Pats would likely have another ring.

His knee's down. The issue is whether or not he regained control before another part of him hit out of bounds. The league determined he did not, and the league felt that was clear enough to warrant an overrule. That seems to have been an "ambitious" ruling on the part of the league.

Corrente states that ASJ lost control of the ball a second time and was correct. He did not "survive the ground". ASJ did not have control of the ball when he landed OOB. So I wouldn't call it ambitious. Butler and Chung saw the ball movement.

neither of those plays got a replay, either......at least they were on interior DL, where the call tends to happen, and not on a DB chucking a block

The ref stumbles and Butler made contact with him but it was incidental.

Good catch. I didn't realize that at first but you're right the ref stumbled.

The call was "surviving the ground". They felt it was obvious and as indisputable as can be.
If it was about whether the knee was down I would agree with you but the movement of the ball however slight and not visible from all angles really is pretty clear.

I discovered something VERY interesting about Pylongate.

It benefited the JEST last year.

Chiefs defense bails out Spencer Ware on fumble

Now to be fair to the JEST fans they were OUTRAGED that their team benefited from this call and they demanded the ball be given back to Kansas City and BAHAHAHAH I'm just messing with you they were thrilled about it.

Jets vs. Chiefs - 2016 Game 3

Also, this has happened many times before, it's only a big deal because it benefited us.

C.J. Mosley makes interception, fumbles into end zone for touchback

St. Louis Rams running back Benny Cunningham fumbles into the end zone for a touchback

NFL will again revisit most unfair rule in the game

Highlights: Nelson Fumbles At Goal Line For Touchback

And if this is a touchback so was Champ Bailey's fumble in the 2005 playoffs.

That is one hell of a find. Thanks.

Wait, the Jets were the beneficiary of this rule just last season and now the NY sports media collectively acts like they’ve never heard of this situation before? If it wasn’t so predictable, I’d say I was surprised.
