Mike White will start this Sunday, leaving Zach Wilson on the bench to "heal". It lead me to think about the Jets' attempts to develop a QB vs. the Pats who had not needed to develop a QB in the Brady era until now. The Patriots have almost accidentally developed better QBs to be Brady's backup who have then gone on to lead other teams to admittedly limited success than the Jets have to be their franchise cornerstone during Belichick's tenure.
Jets high draft pick QBs
Zach Wilson, 1-5, 63.5 Rating, 1st Round Pick
Sam Darnold, 17-30, 77.1 Rating, 1st Round Pick
Geno Smith, 13-21, 75.7, 2nd Round Pick
Christian Hackenberg, DNP, 2nd Round Pick
Mark Sanchez, 37-36, 73.2 1st Round Pick
Kellen Clemens, 8-13, 63.3 Rating, 2nd Round Pick
Chad Pennington, 44-37, 90.1, 1st Round Pick
Pats backups to Brady who have started more than 10 NFL games
Jimmy Garappolo, 27-12, 97.9, 2nd Round Pick
Jacoby Brissett, 13-23, 83.3, 3rd Round Pick
Brian Hoyer, 16-23, 82.3, UDFA
Matt Cassel, 36-45, 78.5, 7th Round Pick
Obviously Chad Pennington had a fine career, drafted in 2000, same year as Brady, but beyond that the Jets have spent three very high 1st round picks and three second round picks on the position and have not developed a QB better than Jacoby Brissett or Brian Hoyer. Mike White has a very low bar to clear to become the best Jets QB developed since Chad Pennington.
