On Brady's interception, the DB pushed Dorset out of the way (and in the back) to get the INT. How was that not called? The Gronk non call was blatant. Cooks needs to ball more. Lots more.
4th down: I think the Jets QB could have stayed in the pocket longer, maybe he was feeling the ghost of the last rush. As he scrambles he also misses an open receiver who is likely able to get the first and get out of bounds. Instead he overthrows a receiver in triple coverage. Terrible QB play.
I think that one was on Brady, and the terrible decision to throw into double coverage. I've come to the conclusion that we're not going to get many of those 50/50 type calls, so I wasn't as mad about the potential DPI as I was the choice to throw the ball to that receiver. My question is how did anyone watching the game NOT see that. It was egregious, the defender knocked Dorset out of position and took his place to receive a kind INT.
Re Protecting Brady.
Thanks @reamer for the Streamable suggestion.
I loaded most of the 1st qtr offensive snaps from the end zone view to focus on the Offensive line performance.
(Let me know what you think of this video format.)
Things to notice:
1. Dion Lewis's quick movements in the pocket.
2. The use of Waddle in both pass and run plays. He does well in pass and ok in run. (only a few plays so not a critique)
3. The use of 6 Linemen. Extra one being Waddle. They move Solder to the right TE position.
4. The use of various personnel. 12 and 21 specifically.
5. White's blocking.
6. How Devlin is just a Bulldozer of a FB. The guy is such an asset. During a Lewis run Devlin helps carry him a few extra yards.
7. The difference between Gillislee and Lewis's running styles. Both effective.
8. And Finally, the Time and protection Brady had in the pocket.
all-22 makes me even happier about JJ's coverage here.
(the end result unfortunately is the same..)
Without the pressure to McCown and provided he throws it to Kerley on the crosser. Does he get the 1st down?
2. Could McCown have thrown it on the crosser before Kerley turned up field.
Maybe, that throw has some risk. If he throws it behind Kerley, then JJ can make a play on the ball. If he leads him too much perhaps our RCB makes a play on it.
That was just bad. It was RB Travaris Cadet, and even he was like, what are you doing McCown with his body language. How do you not throw it to Cadet. Boneheaded move by McCown, he would have had Cadet at about the 25 yard line, about 10 seconds left with the clock stopped. That's your throw! How do you miss that!

The good news is (discussed already) that two biggest problems of this D got improved. Communication issues are way down last two games and 1st down run D improved. While the average through first 5 weeks was around 6 rush yds allowed on 1st downs (most in the league) and peaked in opening game allowing 10 rushing yards on average, last Sunday showed major improvement (like “projected“).
_
In 1st NYJ drive that ended w TD Pats allowed just 4 rushing yards on 3 1st down carries (incl. GL stop). So despite giving up early TD there was clear reason for optimism going forward and BB knew it (see/hear Sights and Sounds from week 6 above).
The following drive run D again allowed only 2 yds on 1st down setting easy 3 & out. The result was that on the next drive Jetes started throwing on 1st downs - unfortunately w success: 4 passes for 60 yds incl 31yd TD pass.
Somewhat ironically Pats allowed 7 yds rushes at the start of both next drives and still managed two straight 3 & outs.
Late in the half NYJ followed w short passing drive on 1st downs (3 throws for 23 yds) that ended in Butler's INT on 2nd & 12 short throw.
On the first drive of second half NYJ ran 3 times for a total of 5 yds on 1st downs (with one pass incomplete at the start of the drive). Drive ended w McCourty's INT.
After NE field goal it was two possession game so that changes the approach and numbers on NE D of course. Still, run D on 1st down was mostly solid allowing 3, 12 and 2 yds.
So a total of 42 yds on 12 carries allowed on 1st downs - which means they cut the season average by half. Jetes w/o Powell are not great running O by any means but regardless the improvement is visible on film as well and hopefully they can build on that for possibly the biggest of run tests on Sunday..
In Chatham's words as well:
“On 1st drive it might looked like bad D because of the score . but Pats were good on 1st, 2nd downs . so the feeling of regular D - the non 3rd down D - was pretty good: they earned all those 3rd and uncomfortable downs..“
Also nice take on sport viewing psychology:
“starts ugly . you panic . you see two bad drives and you've seen enough . that's who this D is . the things they do later that's not who they are . what sucks about this is there was so much good defensively that happened in this game that goes unseen bc you made that decision in your head that they suck..“
Hence the re-watch thread. Hopefully some game day desperados visit and enjoy here (unless its pathological..)
Can someone post a clip of that 44 yarder to Kerley? That was a massive breakdown, I'd like to look at it.

This. Looks like Kerley is open for the catch, I just can't tell if he would get the 1st down or not.
