All 22 Tape Review Colts Game
Will get to Drake Maye at the End-Guys ridiculous, will go over every one of his incompletions/ sacks
Defense
The biggest issues with the defense are LB, Pressure, and Dugger in coverage:
-Linebacker is an issue, they struggle to get proper depth but also struggle to take proper angles to ball carriers, Tavai is solid enough, Ellis has moments, Bentley would be a big help, overall it is a weak group.
-They can’t get pressure on the QB, White occasionally does, that’s it. Jennings and White are the edge rushers, Jennings never gets home, like ever. Ngakoue spells him and has been useless. White is better inside rushing but they have nobody else on the outside. Barmore looks strong physically but still looks slow in quickness. He’s been off for a long time and is a big guy, going to take a while I think.
-Dugger continues his career liability in coverage beaten twice on the final drive.
-Dell Pettus played 10 snaps, he should be starting with Peppers. I don’t get the love of Dugger and Hawkins. Dugger played better overall but the last drive was not good. Hawkins is OK but has some bad angles. Peppers was great at signaling, telling people where to go, Pettus was like that on some plays but he only got 10 snaps. Pettus as your 4th safety when he might be there best safety this year on tape is not making sense, I think it is a veteran vs rookie thing. Love Pettus, let the guy play as a starter and see if he really is as good as he looks. What happened to play the young guys!
-Ekuale made 2 plays! Then disappeared again, but first 2 plays I’ve seen from him this year.
-Austin took some of J. Jones’ snaps and showed really good closing speed. Marcus Jones also played well, and Gonzalez was phenomenal. I think the DB’s with Pettus, and Peppers, if his legal stuff works out, is solid into next year but need to see if Austin can play against a better QB and receivers. He wasn’t facing much in this game. I leave CB2 as open question for next year but CB1, CB3 and CB4 I think we have, let’s see Austin against Herbert, Allen etc. down the stretch. Would be great if he develops into a solid #2 but way to early to think he has, the reason his closing speed showed up so much was because he let some guys get open, better QB, he might not close so easily.
-Gonzalez made a phenomenal play on the pick that Ellis got. Once the ball was tipped he realized the WR was fair game and shoved him down so he could not try to catch the ball. If he does not do that the ball might have been caught and maybe wasn’t picked.
-Overall Defense-The LB crew and lack of edge pass rusher are glaring holes in this defense. They now get to face Allen and Herbert, IMO the 2 best QB’s in the NFL and Kyler, who is a good running QB, though a meh passer but running QB’s that can pass at all give them fits, imagine if Richardson could throw the ball at an OK level. DB’s are solid but with no pass rush they can’t cover forever. White and Barmore can anchor the line next year and with Godchaux in running downs, that’s solid. Maybe Bentley can solve the LB issue but like to see another starter added there and must get an edge rusher that has some ability to occasionally get some pressure.
Offense
-Let’s say Antonio Gibson was 1 of the good free agent signings, WOO HOO! Guy seems a good fit for this offense and the last 2 weeks really making smart cuts and hitting the hole. Rham is not as suited to this type of offense, not the same speed, and I think Rham had some good runs and was good in this game, but Gibson was excellent and 2 weeks in a row.
-PFF gave the Offensive Line poor grades. PFF can sometimes make no sense but generally they give you a bird’s eye view. This game they are so far off on the line it is ridiculous.
-They have Layden Robinson as a pathetic 28.9 rating? What? Robinson played his best game of the year, pre-season or regular season and it’s not even close. He was strong on running plays, had solid pass protection, probably helped by who he was playing but so what, he was so bad before I’ll take it. Colts did not try to attack Robinson, many plays he had no rusher over him and had to help someone else. Colts game plan probably helped him. Amazing they did not try to attack him, Colts tried only a few stunts. Colts kind of made it easy on the line but Robinson looked solid and had some good run blocking, played hard thru the whistle etc. I thought he was close to 2 holding calls that were not called but hard to tell, the 1 he got I thought was not a hold. Still a little raw on technique, especially on Pass Pro but improved but he’ll need to be better at technique against better players. Positive game for him but still won’t know until next year after a full off season if he can get to the level needed to be a consistent NFL guard. Line gave up only 9 pressures this week vs 18 last week.
-When you go up and down the field nobody on the line is playing poorly. Every lineman had 1 play where they missed a block or an assignment but in addition a couple of the plays that were bad running plays were just bad blocking designs for the alignment the Colts had.
-On the Pats last sack on 3rd and 10, Henry was left 1 on 1 and got beat, at the same time Jacobs got beat. Why have Henry, the #1 receiver for Drake, blocking on that play? Without help?
-AVP overall called a pretty good game. He continues to get too conservative at ends of game drives to close it out. The Patriots this year have run the ball 24 times and thrown 5 times in 4-minute situations. He seems to be improving as a play caller but he needs to let the best player on the team put the game away late. Give him 2 chances to throw PLEASE!
-Bourne looks back to his old self, his speed is there on film and was not there a few weeks ago. Henry, Hooper, Boutte, Douglas, all had moments. Polk rarely played, he actually got open a few times but was not 1st read. The one play he had a pass thrown to him he went to the wrong spot. One thing watching Travis Hunter is he finds spots to get open. He will change the called route and go where there are no defenders. One of the things I love about him as a prospect. Patriot receivers, like Polk, don’t do that so well. Henry is good at it and Douglas has his moments but the rest are not consistently good at adjusting the route based on the defense.
-Austin Hooper had one of his better games, he’s a perfect fit as a #2 TE. Love to have him back for another year while they draft and develop another TE.
-Overall Offense, despite the red zone issues and some late game play calling the offense looked like a Bonafide NFL offense, though it was against a below average, maybe 20th best, defense in the NFL. The way to defend Maye the best in college was rush 3-4 drop the rest into zone coverage. The difference in the NFL is he has a competent coordinator and receivers that can find the holes in the zones. Add a guy like Travis Hunter and you have a guy that can find holes in the zone but also take the top off with his speed. The Colts dared Maye to throw underneath and dared him to hit the outside throws. Same way Brady attacked Seattle Legion of Boom Cover 3. Many QB’s can’t make the throws Maye made due to lack of arm strength and accuracy 10-15 yards out. Maye makes the line look better than they are, but lack of that #1 quick separating outside receiver with some speed to take the top off, AKA Travis Hunter, is still the #1 missing piece IMO, followed by the upgrades needed on the line.
Drake Maye
Why tape is better than stats:
-If Henry catches the pass and scores and Douglas sets himself before going in motion Maye has 3 TD’s and 0 picks. His Passer Rating goes from 97 to 135, Season Rating from 87 to 92.
-The biggest thing scouts miss with a QB going from college to the pros is the ability to process and process fast. Here is the same play run 5 different times, and Maye throws it to all 5 possible reads
-Maye made some incredible throws when he needed to. He was able to get to an open initial read and accurately and quickly get the ball out. He also, when needed, went thru reads and made some incredible throws. Even some of the proper reads and throws were dimes.
-He had 2 zone beating in cuts down the field to Bourne that were just perfection. Looked off the defender in the middle, made the throw well before Bourne cut behind the underneath defender and put it into the opening of the zone. Did it twice to utter perfection. The next time Jayden Daniels makes that throw will be the first time in his life he makes that throw LOL.
-The TD throw to Hooper was elite, threw him open, perfect placement
-Another place where stats are not so good. Maye had 4 sacks, gave him a very high P2S% of 36%. Here were the sacks:
-0 Yards on red zone scramble, stepped out at the line of scrimmage
-3rd and goal at 5, lost 11 yards, tried to escape to extend play, ended up making field goal
-Red Zone scramble, slid down for a yard loss when saw could not run it in and nobody open, on this play when he scrambled Rham stepped out of bounds so took himself out of play and Bourne had slipped and fell, Maye tried to extend and look to run it in or get someone open but didn’t happen, took a 1 yard sack.
-3rd and 11 last drive after the 2 run plays, tried to extend play as needed a first down, 2 yard loss but nobody open and a throwaway was indifferent vs trying to escape pocket and make a play
Realistically only 1 sack that made any difference, and in the end it was still a FG. 1 sack was a run for no gain and the other 2 were 3rd down plays where Maye tried to scramble and extend plays.
Here were his incompletions:
-1st and 10 Indy 39, Maye missed Boutte over middle, Boutte continued route into defender, Maye thru where Boutte should have stopped, where Travis Hunter, next year, would stop
-3rd and goal from 13, nobody open scrambles around and makes a RIDICULOUS throw to Boutte just a yard or 2 out of bounds but the throw was incredible.
-1st and 5 at 47, Polk was supposed to sit, as Maye throws with anticipation of him sitting Polk decides to jump to his right, perfect pass, bad route.
-Incomplete with pressure but Jacobs was holding anyways
-Missed throw 2nd and 6, tried to look to flat, move defender and hit Bouttte on in-cut but defender was converging on Boutte and Maye hurried it a bit and was behind and low. Maybe a throw away but maybe the 1 bad off target pass of the day?
-Last drive long throw to Tight End over middle just tipped by the underneath defender
-The interception. This one Maye thought Henry was going to continue route so threw low and down in front of him, would have probably worked if Henry continued. Henry stopped, looking for the throw on other shoulder. This is one where Henry was right, Maye was wrong BUT ball should still have been caught.
2 incompletions were receivers' fault and the pick was Maye’s fault on the decision but Henry’s fault for not catching it.
-The overall accuracy and decision making are just elite.
-Funny moment-3rd Quarter Maye ran the ball went out of bounds on the Colts sideline and stopped right in front of Antonio Malfi, slapped him 5 and went back to the huddle. Has the coolness to recognize Malfi, act like it’s a post-game meetup, game is not too big for him, football is easy for Maye.
Overall Maye-Highest PFF rated game of the year and I agree was his best game of the year. Add in his big run and might have had as good a game at QB this week as any QB in the league. Henry catches the pick, and DD not in motion and he has the best stats of the week. Luckily the Pats schedule, assuming Bills need the last game, is really difficult because a prime pick this year is an absolute dream scenario because you’re not drafting In the top 10 in the future because Drake Maye will be that good.
