The day will come. But it doesn't come when the GOAT is playing like the GOAT just because you are going to lose the backup.
Here are the options as I see them.
1)If Brady is brady like in 2017 and does not retire JAG is tagged and traded.
2) if Brady falls apart this year and cannot be relied upon JAG becomes the QB and Brady retires or goes elsewhere
3) if Brady sustains a career threatening injury JAG becomes the QB and Brady retires.
I think all 3 are no brainers.
How ever the discussion here has been if Brady is brady in 2916 and shows no sign of decline you have to get rid of him because you can't lose Jimmy. That, to me, is idiotic.
There is a fourth option: Brady plays out his current contract, and is wished all the best as he returns home to chase the all time volume records with the Niners. No trades, no cuts, no hard feelings.
The mantra of "better a year early than a year late" is as old as some fans on this board. Perhaps Kraft won't let it apply to Tom Brady, but age WILL catch up with him, and by age 42 he will be playing on borrowed time. I'd love to see the GOAT play until he is 45 and go out a champion, but it's probably not realistic.
I'd hate to see the team exile him like Seymour or Mankins. And I'd hate to see him suffer a 2015 Manning (Super Bowl notwithstanding) or 2010 Favre type season while wearing the Patriots colors, in front of Boston fans who will be "I told you so-ing" about Garoppolo all season long.
I think the way things will play out is that Garopolo will be extended handsomely before the 2018 league year starts on a deal with a low cap figure for 2018. Brady will play at MVP level through the 2018 season. He will be allowed to walk or to retire. This will be spun as a football business move, but also as a sign of loyalty and respect to the GOAT, who is given the right to finish on his terms rather than being traded or cut.
