Obviously they blitzed Butler, then KVN faked a zone drop, which probably served as a tight quick slant stopper and then he ran a delayed go. Badamosi (sp?) drops to deep quarter right, Harmon drops to deep quarter right center, ?? (eyes can't make out the number, deep safety) rolls to deep quarter left center and McCourtey drops to deep quarter left. Flowers drops intermediate right, Chung has intermediate right center and Richards has intermediate left center. Can't really lay fault on anyone (especially without knowing the call), because Richards instantly turns towards the inside slot on the left and Chung to the right. McCourtey establishes outside leverage and the Jets receiver runs a post/sail rout over the middle of the zone, which was wide open. Looks like they played the defense called and the Jets found the soft spot in the zone. It happens.
I think or hope that this defense will eventually get back to it's 2016 self. Branch getting stronger, Gilmore, Rowe, McClellon and possibly VV might reduce the need for McCourty to be at the LOS.
Im glad film confirms some of the positives re weak spots w rest of the season in mind:
1. DL:
Brown improving, taking command. (Guy being solid all-purpose stud since w1)
Branch bounces back, hints he could be a factor. Here another example of uncle Phil getting some mojo back (look at #97 charging through the middle..)
Wise handling increase of playing time/responsibility ok . getting to know his strengths . (we don't know the calls/responsibilities on some of his “overruns“ so hard to judge that.. still think MP underestimated McCown's mobility on his 3rd down run)
Marsh gradually balancing his strengths (energy, aggressiveness, speed) w his shortcomings (size, discipline)
And here a nice group effort . shows improved discipline, working together, energy.. We'll see how that translates to a bigger challenge (ATL)..
Good analysis here LD....Curious to hear what your thoughts are on Butler...I see flashes, but maybe right now a little too inconsistent, not able to finish?
I loved reading that.
Do you think Butler not even pretending to disguise his upcoming corner blitz made any difference ?
“To have a big role like that, it says a lot for his preparation, and he came through for us,” Belichick added. “I thought he played well, tackled well and did a great job. He stepped in, really did a great job.”
McCourty was in m2m on the TE. He can look around the field to guess who is going to be open and abandon his man.I watched this play again and it looks a bit like D-Mac might have been responsible for that receiver running the slant route in M2M. Van Noy's drop back looks a bit like the underneath zone in a cover 1.
That said, it might have been nice if D-Mac realized that the slant was not open and noticed Butler's guy coming, but not sure it was his "job".

Sw something that provides some context to our OL play: ESPN claims that the Jets are 0 for 602 in creating sacks this season. I fear that the apparent improvements in pass protection might be transient. According to ESPN, the Jets are not even pressuring much.
Serious slump: Jets defensive linemen 0-for-602 as pass-rushers
Most of the credit for Van Noy's sack should go to Butler for blowing up the rub route in front of him, knocking his guy to the ground and giving McCown nowhere to go with the ball. I think he was paired with Jones who deserves some credit too for being on the same page. As we know from Superbowl XLIX covering these routes is a two man operation and Butler is the maestro at defending them.Great contribution @reamer!
I know you're busy being young responsible father . but we need you as well..
BTW - KVN also had a great game by all accounts and your vids confirm some of that.
Her nice late sack w/o compromising a play:
Branch showing some life here as well..
As said before (or in another thread) Branch seems to have had a nice bounce back this game (similar to Sheard last year after benching) so it looks like uncle Phil might still be in play for this season and can find some motivation/hunger (despite already getting - probably his last - guaranteed money).
I concentrated on him a bit in my quick 1st Q re-watch and was happy to see his improved effort. He is the biggest single man reserve (pun not intended) for improvement of front 7 so if he can build on that and come close to last yrs form that would be huge.
Here one good example:
Remember how he was easily pushed around in KC, HOU, CAR games?
