interesting perspective . opponents might wanna exploit more the fact that D-Mac backs closer to the line..

I think or hope that this defense will eventually get back to it's 2016 self. Branch getting stronger, Gilmore, Rowe, McClellon and possibly VV might reduce the need for McCourty to be at the LOS.

I watched this play again and it looks a bit like D-Mac might have been responsible for that receiver running the slant route in M2M. Van Noy's drop back looks a bit like the underneath zone in a cover 1.

That said, it might have been nice if D-Mac realized that the slant was not open and noticed Butler's guy coming, but not sure it was his "job".

Obviously they blitzed Butler, then KVN faked a zone drop, which probably served as a tight quick slant stopper and then he ran a delayed go. Badamosi (sp?) drops to deep quarter right, Harmon drops to deep quarter right center, ?? (eyes can't make out the number, deep safety) rolls to deep quarter left center and McCourtey drops to deep quarter left. Flowers drops intermediate right, Chung has intermediate right center and Richards has intermediate left center. Can't really lay fault on anyone (especially without knowing the call), because Richards instantly turns towards the inside slot on the left and Chung to the right. McCourtey establishes outside leverage and the Jets receiver runs a post/sail rout over the middle of the zone, which was wide open. Looks like they played the defense called and the Jets found the soft spot in the zone. It happens.

I loved reading that.

Do you think Butler not even pretending to disguise his upcoming corner blitz made any difference ?

Im glad film confirms some of the positives re weak spots w rest of the season in mind:

1. DL:
Brown improving, taking command. (Guy being solid all-purpose stud since w1)

Branch bounces back, hints he could be a factor. Here another example of uncle Phil getting some mojo back (look at #97 charging through the middle..)

Wise handling increase of playing time/responsibility ok . getting to know his strengths . (we don't know the calls/responsibilities on some of his “overruns“ so hard to judge that.. still think MP underestimated McCown's mobility on his 3rd down run)

Marsh gradually balancing his strengths (energy, aggressiveness, speed) w his shortcomings (size, discipline)

And here a nice group effort . shows improved discipline, working together, energy.. We'll see how that translates to a bigger challenge (ATL)..

Good analysis here LD....Curious to hear what your thoughts are on Butler...I see flashes, but maybe right now a little too inconsistent, not able to finish?

2 LB:

KVN's great game. Having High besides him (or at OLB but taking command) made him faster, more dangerous player. They work really well together..

Hightower at his best when he's acting from all different places . and opponents never know if he's rushing, dropping, stuffing, covering, spying..

The third LB spot is a problem of course . Chung being best option

Roberts can be great situational player vs run (although misses there too many times as well) but is too big liability in coverage and the D becomes too much exposed unless a clear run situation. But he is a destroyer and put in the right position (not like on ASJ) great GL D assett..

Richards had his best game . but I wonder if he will be a game plan choice vs. ATL speed and agility (M.Flowers should be better option there IMHO)

Great play by Jordan Richards here. He had quite a few strong stops

3. OL

Some nice examples of OL getting healthier which also affects working better as units esp. G-T double units which were affected by Cannon's injury and Solder's underperformance.

Solid situational/rotational player. Better than what was expected in similar capacity from Anthony Johnson last yr. Has a way to break through lines and does well on limited snaps. I never thought of him as a starter (he stepped up ok in the beginning of the season) but is a nice option to have on 3rd downs and nice rotational option across DL.

Tough to say, because its really hard to disguise a corner blitz. The distance involved makes a delayed corner blitz from the outside nearly worthless. Normally the way to beat the corner blitz is to attack it. You quick throw to the vacant receiver. That didn't happen.

But its possible, considering it was picked up and McGown didn't panic and make the quick throw. But that is probably why they felt ok leaving the middle of the field open, the Pats probably figured if they complete it that area, then we simply got beat.

When you design a blitz, you know where your weakness is and if you don't get to the QB and they hit you where you left yourself open, nothing you can do but give the other team credit.

“To have a big role like that, it says a lot for his preparation, and he came through for us,” Belichick added. “I thought he played well, tackled well and did a great job. He stepped in, really did a great job.”

McCourty was in m2m on the TE. He can look around the field to guess who is going to be open and abandon his man.

Great post.

Sw something that provides some context to our OL play: ESPN claims that the Jets are 0 for 602 in creating sacks this season. I fear that the apparent improvements in pass protection might be transient. According to ESPN, the Jets are not even pressuring much.

Serious slump: Jets defensive linemen 0-for-602 as pass-rushers

The thing I took away from that game was that the Pats shifted their O line protection scheme. They added bodies to the O line to give Brady more protection. So although I agree that keeping the Jets sackless has to be taken with a grain of salt I'm optimistic that the beefier O line will better protect Brady.

Great contribution @reamer!
I know you're busy being young responsible father . but we need you as well..

BTW - KVN also had a great game by all accounts and your vids confirm some of that.
Her nice late sack w/o compromising a play:

Branch showing some life here as well..
Most of the credit for Van Noy's sack should go to Butler for blowing up the rub route in front of him, knocking his guy to the ground and giving McCown nowhere to go with the ball. I think he was paired with Jones who deserves some credit too for being on the same page. As we know from Superbowl XLIX covering these routes is a two man operation and Butler is the maestro at defending them.

As said before (or in another thread) Branch seems to have had a nice bounce back this game (similar to Sheard last year after benching) so it looks like uncle Phil might still be in play for this season and can find some motivation/hunger (despite already getting - probably his last - guaranteed money).

I concentrated on him a bit in my quick 1st Q re-watch and was happy to see his improved effort. He is the biggest single man reserve (pun not intended) for improvement of front 7 so if he can build on that and come close to last yrs form that would be huge.

Here one good example:

Remember how he was easily pushed around in KC, HOU, CAR games?

That’s a fantastic delayed blitz right there

Good things happen when our DTs win there battles. Branch right there overpowered his first man forcing a double team which opened up number 54 to blitz without being picked up

That’s why it’s important to not only scheme well, but to have players skills and strong enough to win there 1 on 1s at the Line of scrimmage which will create double teams and mismatches for other players
