Defense - old, slow, bad

Having him as a spy on Allen on that first long run was idiotic.
I’d like to see the full film but I don’t think that was a straight spy. If I recall, judon dropped into zone coverage and chipped Beasley. It may have been more like last year vs Mahomes where we had double robbers on either side that could also contain the qb run. But yeah, didn’t make the play or even come close

I know that’s not true just off the top of my head. In fact against these same bills. 2007 the key to stopping the pats was to slow the game down and limit possessions. Bills did just that giving the explosive offense just 8 turns to posses the ball. 8 TDs or 56 points. I don’t remember the bills score but I think it was 10. Now first time that happened in the post season? Maybe. That I am less sure of.

You could be right. It just looked like it.

ok I had to do a little research cuz thats not what I remembered at all. There was in fact a punt and a defensive score though much like the bills victory formation it was the last drive of the game when it was well and truely over. Either way the point remains when you give up 7 TDs the defense was awful and didnt do their job even 10%. The Bills are good with some exciting players but this feels more like defensive failure then offensive unstoppability.

I’m quite shocked we haven’t from the “points per game” and “top 5 defense” gangs.

DL - Barmore,
LB - Judon
S - Phillips, Dugger,
CB - Jackson, Jones, Mills

Hope for Cameron McGrone, Ronnie Perkins, Bledsoe.
Jennings didn't show much his first year.
Uche is fast but doesn't seem to be strong or have any instincts.
I would still like to see Wino play more. At least he is fast, plays extremely hard, and doesn't give up on plays. I've always wanted him to play a Bruschi role but apparently no one else agrees.

NAME A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND GIVE HIM SOME POWER.

Winovich, Uche, Jennings, Perkins...invisible. Why? We've seen the first two flash. What is it that BB doesn't like about them, or the other two, who seem to be "injured" a lot? These are not UFAs - the Pats spent a lot of draft capital getting them - and they were all considered pretty good draft picks. Now for some reason, they're all just invisible, and in positions of need on the team. I don't get it.

Regarding last night, add in Barmore and Collins playing hurt, Jon Jones gone, Mills out, Dugger playing hurt...Gilmore departed, and how much is left?

Maybe a little different D philosophy would get the first four in there a bit - Uche and Winovich are both athletic and fast. Both can provide more intensity up front that we've seen lately, I think.

Maybe McGrone and Raekwon McMillan will help at LB, but they need more than that.

I don't know; it just looks like they're dialing up the same schemes and (plodding) intensity week after week. What's that definition of insanity again?

What happened to the famed A-gap blitzes? Did they throw a blitz outside of (mugged) Judon by a CB or S at all?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but when it's obviously broke...
I was going to start a thread about this and a few other things some time today/tonight. I posted about the O & D a few weeks back in my thread but the issues talked about are still there and will remain without some change. Mostly on defense but there's a few things on both sides that need to get ironed out or upgraded.

From philosophy on defense to an offense that needs to be maximized. A lot of interesting things to talk about.

I will bring High back if he wants to keep playing for the culture and then bring in new blood for the defense. What happened to Perkins? Failure to launch?

is Wino undersized for his position? And top 5 Defense?? No way. This team couldn’t stop the run all year, the Titans back up ran all over us.

i miss the Wilfork days….

High was truly injured or he is done. Thought the year off would help him. It appeared to early on but he looked like he belonged in the geriatric unit last night. Sad to see he's been a great Patriot.

Linebackers and a big body NT are the priority on defense. I know captain obvious.

I’m still having a hard time grasping how they couldn’t force a single punt in two games against Buffalo, that’s so demoralizing.

No adjustments needed after the first game

Our defense was awesome up until barmore hurt his knee. At that point, the defense was only singling barmore and could slide protection against judon making him a ghost.

and because wise provides nothing as a pass rusher on the opposite side, qb’s had time in the pocket to beat the soft zone coverage.

the fixes for next season are easy, finding the right players is the hard part:

1.) we need a healthy barmore, and someone to replace guy. Guy is cooked!
2.) we must have a pass rusher opposite judon that can set the edge in the running game and rush the passer from the edge or the interior! Hall of Houston would be the perfect draft pick for us.
3.) we need a press man corner to replace Gilmore and a better slot corner than Bryant. I know jones is coming back, but he is not a spring chicken anymore.
4.) more athletes at linebacker. Hightower and Collins are cooked!

I agree mostly.
1. Guy is cooked, but we need two stout defensive linemen. Hopefully a FA and a draft pick. If we need to be able to push the opposing oline backwards and let our linebackers run free.
2. Hopefully Perkins will help opposite Judon, with another similar draft pick.
3. Press corner agreed.
4. Hopefully McMillan and McGrone can go a long ways to increasing the speed of the LBs. HT is done. Collins is done.
5. Need some help at WR. I am not as concerned as others. Agreed it would be great to have a #1, but those guys are tough to draft or sign.

The fact that uche and winovich cant see the field when we need faster players is really disturbing. Not sure if its their evaluation of the players or something else.

It'll be far more heartening (and logical) to me if the problems are more of philosophy than of simple talent.

It seems like we're seeing far too many players coming in and underwhelming - players who succeeded elsewhere. It used to be said, all the time, that BB puts players in the best positions to succeed, but I'm beginning to lose faith in that notion.

Just watched Bosa run a pretty stunt, using his speed and nice coordination with the DT, to crush Dak. Beautiful little stop, sidestep, and fly play - Winovich can do those, as can Uche.

I'm just not seeing them on the Pats of late, and particularly where the more athletic guys are sitting in favor of the more consistent, but older and slower, vets.

Sometimes it just comes down to athleticism. Particularly now, where the NFL is much more dynamic than it used to be.

1. Guy shouldn't be an every down lineman at this point, post-30.
2. Agreed - but I've said the same of Wino, Uche, and Jennings.
3. Sign or tag JCJ, but find a second guy - Wade? Leblanc? I like Mills and think he was a steal, but he's not at his best on the outside. I want him with the play in front of him.
4. Fingers crossed. I was hoping they'd get Zach Cunningham when he was waived. They need energy and violence - Vrabel grabbed him for exactly that reason.
5. Always the unicorn for the Patriots. I think they've got enough in the skill positions (draft a top WR early, to go with Bourne and Agholor and Meyers if he sticks around). If they found a way to get a number one, everyone behind that guy would get more opportunities.
