No Gilmore, No Rowe at Practice (Weds) [wk 7 vs Atl injury reports & updates]

The fact that they have not IR'd Rowe means they are still holding out hope for his return. An injury to a CB against Jones et al. is discomforting to say the least, but don't you think it is more likely they would use McCourty in a CB role before Lewis (or another PS signing)? If so, the concern would really be 2 CB injuries, which is a more reasonable gamble. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
Not to state the obvious, but I think that whatever decision is made will give us a good hint of the expected progression in health for Gilmore/Rowe. Ultimately, you may be right that they'll gamble again in hopes of getting through the next 2 games and getting someone back after the bye.

Of we do play Butler, Bademosi and Jones at CB, it might be the fastest trio we ever put back there. Now, if they can just get their hands on a ball or two.
Butler isn’t exactly known for speed.

2009 included Jonathan Wilhite at 4.38, Darius Butler at 4.38 and Terrence Wheatley at 4.37. A lot of speed. Didn’t mean they were very good.

Butler had a bad time at the combine but is obviously much faster (a famous story--ran 4.6 at the combine, went undrafted, then Patriots came in and timed him at 4.4 and the rest you know). I didn't say they were good, just fast. But they are also more promising than the 09 group. These guys strike me as a competitive group. No fear!

Let's activate defensive backs from the practice squad I do not want to see Richards lined up on anyone man to man.
Its a instant TD
How many TDs has Richards allowed this year?

I feel like B.B. always goes really thin on DBs and WRs if their are injuries.

He won’t call anybody up from the PS.

Those 12 special team specialists are too important. Sigh

On the DB situation:

1. IIRC Pats usually make roster changes on Saturday. So it will be interesting to monitor what happens tomorrow.

2. It will be unusual to go with just 3 CBs despite D-Mac versatility. Its not like safety position is deep esp. playing lots of nickel and dime. So just 7 DBs would seem somewhat risky esp. if the gameplan for ATL explosive run game calls for even more dime.

3. There is another player on the roster who can help at hybrid DB/LB position and that's M.Flowers. He did play there already vs. Panthers.

4. There are more options handling 53 situation. Plenty of flexibility to insure themselves for (hopefully) short term DB crisis.

a) If reports are true that Langi is unlikely to return then he is the #1 option to make room. The Q is if the Pats asked for him to be put on Commish exempt list - but if its unlikely to return this season That's irrelevant - goes to NFI.

b) If they want to bring Lewis short term and don't want to lose him on waivers later they still can. Who knows what happens with roster in next weeks. Plus they have 2 players in Bolden and esp. Grissom they can likely move off and on 53 like they did already . esp. Grissom - he is playing a lot of ST but ST was good in weeks w/o him.

c) They can bring Wiltz who is longer w the team; I feel he's more ready to play at the moment if necessary and he's no waiver risk.

d) They can bring David Jones wh0 has some corner and also “star“ experience IIRC besides safety.

Release Jordan Richards is the easiest answer I can think of.

Richards had solid games both times he had bigger role on D. He is core ST player playing well on all units . taking over some “green dot“ duties earlier in the season with Ebner and Slater out.

So you would release an experienced DB to bring a CB you never saw play in an NFL game before? Or would you think again?

Well I expect ryan to be in the shotgun all night long. These RBs will also be a problem.

I'd release him for a unknown talent with higher upside who whom the Bills just tried to poach.
I know Richards is smart savy special teamer he can play in the box a bit but covering receivers chasing down plays not his forte.
This game if a Atlanta receiver gets behind him it's night night

Of course Atlanta gets Sanu back and the Pats go into Sunday night with one of the worst corner troikas in the nfl...
