If what Mary Cabot says is true, would you still deal Jimmy G.?

  • Yes. I would take whatever I can get, especially if it includes the #12 overall pick

  • Perhaps, but their offer has to include a couple more picks, including a 2nd rounder. Or NO DEAL

  • No. Jimmy G will still be in New England if the compensation does not include multiple 1's

It's An interesting one. Browns need time period to rebuild. It's weather they think waiting a year and getting one of the top QBs of the draft where the talent is a lot better. Build a couple of core players like a myles garret, linebacker etc then come next year get a QB and that could be start of the browns rebuilding. But they need to pick good in this years draft. Dread to think what BB would do with the browns picks

Tough thing about doing that is you have a big hunk of cap tied up until you can consummate the trade, which can limit you greatly in the early stages of free agency.

True, but given the cap space we're projected to have I don't think that'll be a huge problem.

One thing to note- the 49ers back in the 90's with the West Coast offense and the Patriots today remind me of each other with regards to QB. The 49ers had what Walsh called a "complete system," and as long as QBs were sufficiently trained with a year or two of learning, they seemed to be able to turn modest QBs into good QBs, like Elvis Grbac, Bono, making Jeff Garcia a Pro Bowler.

Similarly, the culture, teaching, coaching, and "read the defense" passing system of the Pats may be similar. There might be an easier transition window for the Pats to develop a college QB into someone who can take them far, like Jeff Garcia, although not be at Brady/Montana/Young levels.

That's what the Pats system and current winning culture and coaching strikes me as, although I guess my only solid evidence is Matt Cassel looking good here and pedestrian elsewhere, except he had a prime Moss and Welker and a great O line. Ryan Mallet didn't look much better here than on the Texans I guess.

That said, if Garoppolo is special in the same way that Brady is special, there is going ot be an interesting dilemma in a year or two. I don't know how you release Brady (the ultimate "Patriots philosophy" decision of a year too early, etc") without being sure Garoppolo is the One, and the only way to do that is to see him in action. Which won't happen with Brady at such a high level.

My opinion is Brady has a great chance of playing to 45. I believe in the effects of modern nutrition and a vegan lifestyle with low impact resistance band training. If I were the Pats, though, if they're going this route I would invest in a couple high-end offensive linemen. Having a healthy Brady (obviously as you're all aware) can paper over not having the highest priced WRs or even defensive core and keep you with a good shot at making the AFCC/Super Bowl every year, but not vice versa. Meaning I think the O-line is good, but we need to be closer to great O-line even if it means sacrificing some talent elsewhere IMO to keep Brady from getting all these hits as he gets older.

Agreed.

Perspective, people.
Both Wilson AND Brady each WON a Super Bowl and yet post win, many NFL "experts" and many Patsfans at that time doubted their ability to be considered true Franchise QBs.

Given that much playing time PLUS their extraordinary success, yet there was this widespread skepticism.
NOW do folks see why NFL owners & GMs are simply behaving as usual being wary of tossing #1 picks at a guy who played 6 quarters of NFL ball???

And yet teams reach every year in the draft for that franchise quarterback ending up with egg on their face at least half the time. Despite this, we keep hearing JAG after 3 years in the NFL with really good (but very limited) performance on the field is not worth a first round pick.

Some quarterbacks are done after 3 years; JAG is still around and clearly highly valued by the Pats. He's clearly worth a first round pick - and given the market (high demand, low supply for franchise QB *prospects*) is worth multiple number ones. Even with only 1 low cost year left. Because the value is so great if he's even above average - and he could be a franchise QB.

At some point we'll know how good he is. But the time to make a decision is this off-season. We'll see.

I can name at least five QBs under 30 who are much better than JG and who I'd take on my team right now over him. Maybe more if I think about it.

And I expect everyone of them would require multiple first round picks to acquire...

If true that Patriots want #1 overall (3000pts)

Then using Browns picks
#12 = 1200
#33 = 580
#52 = 380

and 2018 2nd rounders in their 2017 spots
own #33 = 580
Eagles #43 = 470
Texans #57 = 330

Means a haul number of 3540

Therefore I'd suggest they keep the 2018 own pick 3540 - 580 = 2960pts

Of course, because half the picks are next year people may think we should get more, maybe include that 2018 own pick.

Would be better for the Browns just to give #1 overall.

And are already starters who their teams would not be looking to trade regardless.

Very true on both.

I was responding to the quote that JG is "as good as any other under 30 QB in this league". Not even close to true.

Just saw on Rotoworld that "there is growing belief" in league circles that the Browns will pursue cousins.
Lucky Kirk.

Lucky Kirk.

Had you read my post #123 on this thread........you would know this is happening.

That's good because the Browns would give a haul for him and the Redskins would turn around and come Jimmy G shopping.

Well if the Pats don't trade JG this off season then... What does that mean to you?

I agree with you. JG is unproven which is part of the reason I'd love to trade him for multiple pics. We'll see.

If Cleveland is really hell bent on using their #1 overall on Myles Garrett instead of offering it for JG, then why not offer the Pats Emmanuel Ogbah plus some draft picks?

Ogbah and Garrett seem redundant (actually, Ogbah is supposed to be a bit faster).

What do you say CLE? Ogbah + the 12th pick for Jimmy G?

I forgot they had ogbah. Now they will draft another DE?

I doubt we get the Browns #1 overall, we have a good shot at getting their number 12 If they can't find anyone worth drafting in the first...I really don't see many QBs in this years draft becoming successful NFL starters, even someone like Watson is not ready to start for a franchise, he is a project and may not work out.
