a theory .... i have heard on this board that the league frowns on tag-and-trade. true? (i'm sure the players union frowns on it)

wouldnt it be more convenient to "need to franchise" Cassel "in case Brady is not ready". only to find out he is fine, so who wants a top 10 (or even top 5) QB? there will be multiple clubs in the bidding for sure.

could this be a decent explanation of the facts?

(apologies in advance since i love conspiracy theories!)

What part of "do not start another one" didn't you understand?

Tag & trade is not a big deal. The only way it could become one is if the tagged player files a grievance based on the "Good Faith Negotiations" clause in the CBA. Since tagged players would welcome the opportunity to be traded and sign a lengthy big money contract with another team, grievances aren't filed. The Player's Association will always see a multi year contract as being better for a player than a one year tag providing the first year's total money is close to the tagged figure and that it meets the player's approval.

I see this particular circumstance as a win/win for Cassel. He is either traded and gets a multi year contract or stays a Pat and gets 14 mil for this year. I could be happy with either one.

As I look at the Pats who will be free agents after the 2009 season (Wilfork, Mankins, Hobbs, Neal, Vrabel, Seymour), I see next year as perhaps our last best chance to be an elite team with this core group. After the 2009 season a 2-year retooling might be necessary. Not preaching gloom and doom here, just looking at the business end of the game realistically.

That said, I don't see a Cassel trade unless the organization is sure that Brady will be recovered and hungry. They're not going to put the season in the hands of O'Connell or a vet who doesn't know the system.
