Jerruh Jones trying to block Goodell extension

La Canfora reporting the contract is really done and just waiting to announce it. Saying there really isn’t a palace coup against RG, but people wanting to see changes in the commissioner’s office. I’m not sure axing Pash is going to solve the NFL’s problems.

Goodell is toxic. The article mentions how Paul Tagliabue and Gene Upshaw worked together to the benefit of the league. That kind of relationship is now impossible. If for no other reason than labor peace, Goodell has to go. It will be interesting to see what Kraft's role is in all this.

I suppose it’s just coincidence that this is now happening while the ratings are steadily declining and the NFL is losing money hand-over-fist.

I think it still gets done. I don't think the number is 17, but it's obvious Jerry is pissed.

Schefter reported last week that's the deal was done in principal, but got delayed for confirmation, so I found it interesting he was involved with this report too.

2017: Goodell must go because he ruled against MY player and now it looks like he's screwed our cash cow

You can certainly criticize Jerry for being a hypocrite but I wish we had an owner who would offer more than a little lip service when one of our players (especially when we're talking about the GOAT) gets screwed over.

If there are actually 17 owners who want to see him out, he is a dead man walking.
You need 3/4ths to fire him, but I also think you need 3/4ths to agree to extend him. So while 9 owners couldn't oust him, they could refuse to renew.

Disagree.
It wouldn't take a technical "majority" to make Goodell's position untenable. Once elected, the Commissioner's authority is almost entirely "referential." Goodell couldn't effectively lead the league with even a handful of prominent owners insisting that he be removed. If Jones, Kraft, Laurie, Mara/Tisch and Art Rooney all want him gone, he's gone. It would just be a matter of weeks before the small market owners would fall in line.

Owners will nickle and dime the players and then pay a guy 44 mill who would make no where close to that anywhere on the open market.

I agree. Technically it takes 24 to fire, but 17 opposed means his authority is gone - cannot effectively lead. His position is untenable - really even if 10-12 were opposed.

But, that's exactly where we disagree. His position is untenable if even just those five are opposed to him.

Actually apparently they do not need to vote on the contract - the committee was given that authority already. But 17 opposed would mean he could not lead - he would have to go sometime soon.

You are probably right. Goodell’s problem is no one will “die” for him - no one loves him. There is not a group of younger owners looking to wrest control from the blue bloods - at least yet.

What do you mean "go away"? I hope you don't expect him to quit earning a $40 million annual salary because some of the owners oppose him.

There would be an impasse. They can't fire him, he won't quit, but he has no real power. I think I'd enjoy watching that ****storm, but it won't happen.

If he could not lead, eventually there would be 24 to fire.

Here's the funny pettiness of owners.

Jerry Jones got screwed up the you know what by the league when they came down on him for breaking the cap in an uncapped year. Kraft talked him down and said he should eat it and like it for the benefit of the league.

So deflategate rolls around and Kraft is talking his big game, and Jones is there saying "oh where was this when it was my head on the block".

And that in a nutshell is why a lot of owners didn't back Kraft during it.

Jerry's getting screwed again and now he's ready to hit the mattresses

I don't think the ratings are really an issue. People have to understand this.

1. Ratings have been going down in EVERYTHING for like a decade. The NFL was one of the only products still rising.

2. The NFL still has better ratings than everything else, it's just starting to experience the dip EVERYONE else did.

3. The NFL is sliding at a much slower rate than the rest of television. So they are still in a better position than everyone else.

4. The NFL made a fortune under Goodell. The owners ultimately won't forget that. And it's debatable that they want to go into their next television contract negotiations without the guy who got them the amazing deal they currently enjoy.
