Free Agent Signings around the League

Sorry I missed a few hours of "Oh my God, the Pats haven't made a move and Team X has made themselves far better" panicking. I hope I didn't miss much.

Looking at all the signings today, the only really good one I saw (in terms of value and quality of the player vs. contract) was by Denver with Ward and, let's face it, an in the box safety isn't going to turn their defense into the 2000 Ravens.

There are still plenty of players left available and in a day or two they won't be commanding money way beyond their value (hello, Donte Whitner). Whether the Pats pick some of them up is yet to be seen, but I am never upset when the Pats sit out the first day. More free agency busts on the first day of free agency than the rest of the first week. I saw too many contracts today that I wonder what the GMs were thinking.

Hell, if you are upset right now as a Pats' fan, try being a Jets' fan who thought the Jets were going into free agency guns a blazin with something like $40 million in cap room and tons of needs especially on offense and all they have done is given Nick Folk an extension.

Saw the reports on this thread. Let's get back on topic and end the arguments, as well as the ridiculous notion that the annual "they-haven't-signed-anyone-in-the-first-few-hours" approach that is basically "business as usual" for this club is reason to panic.

This isn't anything new for those of you who have sat through this part of the season over the years. And for those who talk about them not being a good team with the moves they've made in the past, may I remind you they were better than all but two other teams last year and were one game away from a championship birth. Although I guess I'll bang my head against the wall there when September gets here, but let's just get through this week first :ugh:

The Pats can make plenty of moves to free up cap space without restructuring him. My guess is they don't want to push money into the future at this point because at his age (he turned 32 yesterday), he might be playing year to year under his current deal.

Agreed, just putting it out there now that things have slowed down.

that's such as stupid line, especially when talking about our defense. Brady and Belichick are the reason we are good, certainly not because of our FA prowess. People just don't have the balls to say this front office has made mistakes and it's funny but mostly sad.

You don't think they have a plan? Cleveland's jumped on it the first day. I think I like our plan better than their's, but opinions differ.

I'm not a believer in dumb luck.

A Mankins release would be shocking.
I agree you could get creative with the cap how you pay the money.

Per Aaron Wilson, Eric Wright is staying with the 49ers.

Curren doesn't like the fact the pats let all the good S go so far today. http://ow.ly/uunv4.

I still think they are much higher on Harmon then almost everyone here

so far the WR's are getting shunned in this market...how does this impact Edelman?

The only restructure that would require Mankins approval would be an extension. Otherwise, the Pats could guarantee his salary and push some of that money into the remaining years of the contract without his approval.

The question is who was the source of Guergian's Tweet? Was it the Patriots who have no desire pushing more dead money on his contract into the future or Mankins who has no desire to take a pay cut. I actually took it as the former, but it could be the later. The former would mean that (if true) there would be no restructure of any kind. The latter would mean that converting salary to bonus is still on the table.

EDIT: As Miguel points out in his tweet response to Karen, it has to be coming from the Pats because there is no down side for Mankins to convert salary into bonus money.

There are still some good safeties on the market and I would take Chris Clemons over one or two who went today. He is the type of safety that Belichick seems to have been chasing for the last few years. He is a hard hitting "in the box" safety that can cover as a deep man and also play man-to-man when called on. Not a star, but a solid player. He isn't as good as Ward vs. the run, but he is probably significantly better in coverage.

Cutting Isaac Sopoaga and Adrian Wilson would have freed up approximately $3.67 million in salary cap space.

I honestly think that the most inexplicable fact of the day is that Sopoaga is still a Patriot. Is there any reason not to have cut him yet?

They are going to have to get another safety somewhere. It's hard to witness Cam Chancellor's post season and not scratch your head...5th round? lucky hit? philosophical oversight due to ethereal "measurables"? these players are IN this draft somewhere and McCourty needs a strong safety type not another weak but willing free safety at his side.

unless they're cutting another DT. I know. its tough to think about.

Insurance until they restructure Wilfork. I think if they find another DT they like like say Randy Starks or Wilfork redoes his contract, he will be released.

Welcome to the dark side. Careful now lest you get labeled a "second guesser".
