Draft Rumors

Falk's just a Texas Tech guy. Never taken snaps under center. No athleticism. Mike Leach quarterbacks don't work out, though maybe he'll be a backup forever.

Mike White's the later round guy I can get behind. He can spin a nice ball and he's played in different systems. Heavy feet though. Might be Ryan Mallett 2.0, but he's smarter.

I'm rooting for Lauletta but the arm isn't there.
You should watch the sports science episode on falk. He rated off the charts in consistency in his drops and footwork.
Not sure what leach qb you think should have made it. Falk is better than anyone he had at Texas tech.

He's Colt McCoy. I don't really have a thumbs up or thumbs down to that because you could do a lot worse than Colt McCoy in the 3rd round, but I can't help but feel you can probably also do much better (though perhaps not reliably at quarterback).

Upside Wise I see Kirk Cousins but the median might be a Mike Glennon. He was talked of as a potential first rounder last year but played most of this year with a broken wrist.

I’m just going to assume you meant McCoy as a comp in that they’ll both be quality backups for years in the league. Not playing style wise

Trent Dilfer on Lamar Jackson and Luke Falk.

Says Falk is the perfect successor to Tom Brady. Calls Falk “the most disciplined human you’ll see in college”.

On Lamar, he says that he’s miles ahead of Vick coming out of college.

Here’s the video @AndyJohnson recommends.

It should also be noted that Falk models his preparation on Tom Brady.

One final question. Luke Falk or Brian Hoyer? Easy answer for me.

Thanks for finding that.
Doesn’t sound like Colt McCoy to me.

I see him as a guy whose best strengths are the ones that are most vital to a qb and while every qb is a crapshoot a guy with a good chance to develop into a smart, disciplined, accurate pocket passer who can deliver under pressure.

Actually reminds me a lot of Garoppolo.

But does Falk have the ability to get passes to a receiver in tight coverage?

Good short-to-intermediate accuracy, limited to non-existent deep ball, not from a pro-ready system, used to throwing to open windows. I think McCoy had better processing speed but Falk is more naturally gifted. I think it's a decent comparison, Trent Dilfer hype videos filmed in shorts notwithstanding.

Within 10 yards he does. His stuff floats after that. Something like 75% of his passes were within 10 yards of the LOS.

In the draft challenge game I have the Patriots taking Wynn and Guice in the 1st. They're two of my top-5 players. I might prefer a quarterback but I suspect the good ones will all be gone by the time the Patriots pick. A wild card would be if Josh Allen falls to #23 but all the other quarterbacks are gone.

Do you think Wynn could fall to 23? Or are you hoping for a bounce up to get him?

I agree that he has the necessary mental traits for a QB and a number of traits that fit the Patriots, both mentally and in terms of the QB skill set. As Dilfer said, he’s largely plug and play in our offense as a backup to Brady. His throws can be a bit off at times and he needs to handle pressure better but that’s where development comes in. No-one is expecting him to start day one. At least I hope not.

As are 75% of nfl passes give or take.

Serious question. What was Brady’s percentage in his first couple of seasons here?

Honestly I think it depends on whether teams above the Patriots see him as a guard or tackle. I think he's the best tackle in the draft but I suspect some teams view him as a guard because of his arm length. Teams might be leery of spending a pick in the teens on a guard.

Low 60s, right around 60. It jumped to 68 in 2007 and has more or less stayed in the upper half of the 60s since.

EDIT: Whoops, misread. Thought you asked for completion percentage. I'll dig.

He could, there are up to five interior OLs being projected to go in the first round so it’s clearly possible. Personally, I wouldn’t trade up but would seriously consider him at 23. He might not have the physical traits to be a LT but he certainly played like a top one at Georgia.

Sorry for interjecting, just my two pennies.

Mike Mayock’s mock is live now on NFL network. Has Darnold going first to Cleveland. He hasn’t been wrong with the first overall pick since 2008.

Among amateur and professional draft pundits. Not on fan boards. That Lamar Jackson is perceived as more polarizing than Allen here - as the poster I was quoting insinuated - when the people who put in time on the draft have a pretty steady grade on him suggests that there's something else at play. Unconsciously, in most cases.

I know you're going to disagree with me on this and it was completely predictable that you'd be the one jumping in when I dropped that. It's like Deus bait, you can set your watch to it. But there's absolutely no point in going back and forth on it.

You needlessly injected race and politics when neither applied. The rest is just you doubling down on stupid.

It's about 70% in the NFL but college passers tend to have longer depth of target. You have to be careful with those Air Raid offenses because the guys are often wide open and they're throwing it 5, 6 yards downfield. In the pros the short throws are into much tighter windows and you need to be able to credibly threaten at the intermediate and deep ranges. I don't know if Falk can do all that. It would have required him to play in another system to prove, and the way his few deep throws flutter make me nervous.
