Some Lazar stuff is getting out..

Hightower actually sheds his block perfectly in time to get to the RB. But somehow then does not. I don't know if the camera angle is making him appear closer to the RB than he was in reality but it looked bad either way.

That play shows why I think it might be worthwhile to explore moving Hightower down to DE so long as it doesn't mean increased playing time for Elolandon Roberts. He isn't having any issues shedding or fighting through blocks. His issues are in lateral pursuit and sealing off the edge. Move him down to DE where his coverage responsibilities are limited and let him get after it.

He can't be worse than Clayborn or Davis have been.

It seems we played an awful lot of 3 lbs with only 3 DL
I think we always have trouble when we go small, like the infamous 4 safety d.
I’d be interested to see how much of the run d struggle was from 3-3 vs 4-2.
I also think nickel base is much harder when you don’t have a db out there like Chung who can impact the run d. None of the other safeties do.

I noticed the bolded as well, that's what meant by being to slow/small at times.

I'm hoping Clayborn can improve as the season goes on and he gets more comfortable, but Davis has been anywhere from terrible to horrific. How Rivers isn't getting playing time over him is one of history's greatest unsolved mysteries.

By snap count we played 3 LBs on virtually every play.
We had a total of 139 DT snaps in 74 plays and only 96 DE snaps.

I’ve never seen us do that before.
It really seems like we are searching for a base defense concept.

That’s a hell of a play by Hightower.

That's exactly what I thought. He's double teamed, does helluva job shedding and makes the initial stop- before Shelton got there. W/O Highs stop that's a couple more yards.
Was scratching my head at luuked's comment on this one.

You don’t coach “beat the crap out of your man straight up one in one”

Here you go again, putting words in my mouth.

It's all about knowing the other teams' OL, inside out, because you go up against them every day in practice, you know all the little things, the weaknesses that they have because you see them every day. Patricia knows that once Mason loses leverage, it's easy to push him off base. All these things add up.

I would much rather put Rivers there. Honestly rn HT hasn't done much off anything. Maybe some snaps but no way do I want him out there playing DE in a full time role.

Any ol who loses leverage is beaten. Every coach who has ever coached knows that. It’s like you are saying Patricia coached the player up by saying “just get leverage and you can control that guy because I know him and what either against every guard in the nfl will work against him.” Genius.

If he’s ready to go I’m ready to pull VV up to the main roster in favor of shelton. And move 54 on the line at DE.

To me it looked like he could have stopped the run even earlier. But then again this could have just been the angle (as I pointed out).

I think its just a misunderstanding.

What’s Shelton shown at this point to warrant the PT he’s getting?

Use them both in a rotation. Hightower is a massive liability right now at LB. Moving him to DE would limit a lot of what he's been struggling with so far.

Got it backasswards, as usual.

Should probably go back to the 5 man hybrid front.. that seems to suit him best.

To me he’s earned at least a shot to see what he can provide at DE. That was painful watching him run laterally
