I can't see how what happened can even be called a fumble. It moved through the air from 1 hand to the other, never hit the ground. Butler dislodged it but the runner got control of it again, then landed on the pylon. Calling it a fumble makes no sense. If a runner were in the open and at the goal line tossed it from 1 hand to the other it would still be a TD.

Complete unrelated side note, but one of my favorite acronyms is EABODADIAF, "eat a bag of ****s and die in a fire", pronounced EE-Bah-Duh-DEE-af. We have Farsi linguists here with nothing to do, so I asked them what it meant, just as a joke. One of them took about 45 minutes (I tried to stop her), and she said it was a cognate meaning "audio improvement". Even after I told her I made it up, she insisted. Another Farsi linguist did the same.

But yeah, most Boston media could use "audio improvement".

Hopefully they instill this mentality to Gillmore. I happened to be watching highlights of the Bills/Pats game from 2016 where Hogan caught a deep pass. Gilmore turned to complain to other defenders before Hogan was even over the goalline even though he himself had a 'chance' at a TD-saving tackle. Ok, I'm done hijacking the thread. But yo are right, the Pats have a 'never give up attitude' that is sometimes rewarded.

1) butler didn't give up on the play and punched it out

2) both butler and harmon clearly knew exactly what happened and both knew the rule.....they adamantly called it even while the TD sign was given

Honestly, I think Butler was trying to tell the ref it was an incompletion. You can see him waving his arms signifying incomplete pass. He wasn’t saying it was a touchback.

There is no controversy over the enactment of the rule.

There is controversy because people FEEL the rule is wrong.

Feels > Reals.

You can see it loud and proud in this very thread, with the same couple einsteins adamantly insisting that the official NFL rule book is wrong because it goes against their feelings, even after they've been corrected multiple times and had the rule recited back to them.

If this happened to Gronk there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth about the call...

I'd be pissed off in the same way I was pissed off when the Jets beat us in 2013 on a rule that has never been called before or since, or when we lost to the Jets in 2001 due to the tuck rule. I'd say "that's a really stupid rule that we lost on account of, I hope they change it." Probably even less mad than I was in 2013, because at least this call has been made in the history of the NFL prior to Sunday.

Everyone loves to drag this play out as evidence of something. This is one play out of, what? Hundreds this guy plays a year. It's not indicative of anything. Now, if you had a bunch of plays where he does this then that would constitute a pattern of behavior. One play where he had a legit gripe with his safety that was supposed to be helping him doesn't mean he's a dog or locker room cancer or whatever.

Now, if you had a bunch of plays where he does this then that would constitute a pattern of behavior. One play where he had a legit gripe with his safety that was supposed to be helping him doesn't mean he's a dog or locker room cancer or whatever.

Not to mention players on our own team have done the exact same thing. If you think there's a problem that needs to be addressed what should you do - wait until Monday and raise your hand but not use any identifiers so as to not hurt feelings?
