Nice thread overall

Appreciate these gifs and the write-up. In the 2nd play, you made the comment, "Thankfully he chose the right gap to knife into; otherwise, he would have left an open lane if KVN hadn't been there to prevent the cutback." But it looks like (to me anyway) KVN was crashing that gap anyway pre-snap, so it seems like it was planned to me. And if that's true, then just as importantly it's a positive sign that the communication in the front 7 might be getting better, that you don't see two people taking the same gap while leaving a huge hole at another gap.

Brown was wrong shouldering (stunting) to the A GAP and B was KVN's run fit (possibly a blitz instead of a run read). That is by design, not necessarily a reflection of communication. If you look to the other side of the line, Guy is doing the same into the B gap Richards comes down into backside A, not sure if High was supposed to be there in A and got washed out, and richards came down on the run read or if KVN was a true blitz and High was watching front side B gap. Hard to say without knowing the call.

We've struggled against bunch sets, i think this was a bunch set, the corner blitz might have worked. Maybe we weren't expecting a level route and more someone trying to find a spot in the zone.

That was a tight 2 x 2, not a bunch set. A bunch set will typically have 3 receivers (TE's included) all within 3-5 of EMOL. A tight trips, usually in triangle formation, is the most common.

The most unfortunate part of this CB blitz is it failed to create any pressure even if the coverage held longer. The Jets guard was able to pick up Butler. I wonder if Wise (the NT on the play) should have done a swim move to the left side, to occupy that guard.

Not sure if anybody said it yet but those are the situations where we really miss Logan Ryan. He was excellent when blitzing, because he disguised/sold it better than what Butler did on that fourth down play. Hope Butler can grow into the role this season.

yep. it was very visible in comparison looking at last night's game when Logan did just that perfectly a couple of times. its not just the selling though . the burst and speed off the LOS are also a factor. JJ should be perfect for that . I wonder why they don't call him there more (IIRC they did a few times successfully last yr).

The RB committee is coming along nicely as well. Can't wait Burk joins the fun..
All different, all versatile, all good pass protectors.
When all finally healthy this should be fun..

here the vid on his pinball technique

the slalom technique

and combined..

He needs to be fed the ball even more IMO. Make him the primary back.

Interested in analysis of the next to last 4th & long (17?) play on the Jets last drive. How was the target that wide open?

Looks like McCourty had loose coverage. If the blitz had worked McCown would not have had enough time to get that pass off. Good play by the O lineman picking that up.

Butler just sold that one so horribly. His head was turned to the QB the entire time and it almost looks like he turns towards the QB a bit before the snap. Not that it makes a difference but I guess the opposing Jets WR knew long before that he Butler would crash down so could without much stress map out his route.

Also an awful tackle attempt at the ned by Jonathan Jones gave the Jets another 5-8 yards.

Looks to me like McCourty was expecting Harmon to play more shallow than he did and McCourty was worrying about Anderson getting to the sideline. He looked like he was expecting to force Anderson back inside to a would-be tackler (Harmon, in this case), but Harmon was too deep and didn’t realize it until the last minute.

I wonder if Van Noy played that wrong. Both he and Richards initially cover the TE. IF Van Noy had rushed the O line guy would not have pulled to block MB. I guess it could have been by design as well.

That makes sense. Why do you think they don't keep McCourty as the Safety on that play and allow Harmon to cover?

I noticed on the All22 shot above that one of the front 7 players seemed a bit disoriented at the snap and now that I rewatched that it really was KVN. Maybe @mgcolby has any insight what could have been going on ?

Sometimes (quite often actually) big plays are not given away and don't mean its on the D. The biggest play of the 1st NYJ drive - McCown to Kerley for 30 yds that set up a TD - was just amazing play by opponents. Pats seemed to do everything right. Good call, good rush, good coverage, good effort for contested ball.

1. Good 4-man rush up front, A.Butler managed to break through the middle, caught McCown on the run, managed to touch his ankles before the throw and put him slightly out of balance yet McCown (stumbling) still managed to throw a perfect deep ball.

2. JJ had Kerley in perfect coverage (as far as broadcast film shows), makes good play for the ball but is inches short and Kerley makes a great jump catch and secures it..

This is also nice illustration how futile statistics are. JJ gets negative record for 30yds on a good play. Other time he misses his assignment but the ball is dropped or goes elsewhere and his stat sheet is ok..

Guesses?

1. McCourty has the speed and range to stay with Anderson.

2. They feel that Harmon is the better tackler in open field.

3. Prior corner experience.

Just 3 off the top of my head.

Both Richards and Flowers are in outside shallow zones, so my pre-all22 idea that Richards might be responsible was wrong. It is hard to blame McCourty much on this one however; pre snap he was a second deep safety, and had to rush over to the area vacated by Butler. The receiver's slant route cuts across his momentum getting to that area of the field. Not sure if @KontradictioN is correct that Harmon was deeper than expected, it might have been nice for him to dropped back less given it was a 4th and 12.

You have to wonder if this route was a sight adjustment by the Jets. If they see the corner blitz they run a slant route, knowing that the safety will not be able to get there in time.

I agree. Sometimes you can just tip your hat.

This sequence should also come as a reminder how damn thin our margin of error in the SB win in particular (and in NFL games in general) is. Butler was about half a second (maybe less) too late to get to McCown while Hightower stripped Ryan just before he could throw. One is what some people here unrespectfully call a JAG the other one was the MVP last season.
