Patriots Official Unofficial 53-Man Roster: Pre-Season Edition

Zappe reminds me of Brees…who needs some time to acclimate to the NFL. On more then one occasion Zappe has looked better then Mac In practice with wide zone.
Agreed on the need for acclimation time with Zappe. If anything, at least Brees came from a major college in Purdue, one would expect the transition to pros be slower with Zappe from his tiny school.

As far as the comparison with Brees as a prospect, we actually have another Pats QB who reminds me of Brees more (ex-tennis player with a tennis players footwork, fanatic competitor, etc.) but that is off topic for this thread ;)

This will likely be my final prediction:

QB (3): Jones, Hoyer, Zappe
RB (5): D. Harris, Stevenson, Montgomery, Taylor, Strong
WR (5): Meyers, Agholor, Parker, Bourne, Thornton
TE (2): Henry, Smith
OL (9): Brown, Strange, Andrews, Onwenu, Wynn, Cajuste, Herron, Hambright, Russey
DL (6): Godchaux, Wise, Barmore, Guy, Davis, Roberts
EDGE (3): Judon, Jennings, Uche
ILB (3): Bentley, McMillan, Wilson
CB (6): Mills, Jonathan Jones, Bryant, Jack Jones, Marcus Jones, Wade
S (5): McCourty, Phillips, Dugger, Peppers, Bledsoe
ST (6): Folk, Bailey, Cardona, Slater, Bethel, Schooler

  • Would never have put JJ Taylor on the 53 otherwise, but Montgomery's injury along with Strong not looking ready leaves that position very thin.
  • Thornton will go on IR immediately and be replaced by Nixon (or possibly Wilkerson depending on health, or maybe Humphrey).
  • Lately, I've gone back and forth between including Humphrey or Asiasi. This time I went with neither. One or both should clear waivers and be available as a practice squad elevation.
  • **** it, Russey over Ferentz. If they're both mediocre, go with the one who isn't well into his 30s.
  • There's too many DL worth keeping, and someone good is going to have to be risked on waivers/free agency. Ray was the odd one out for me, unfortunately.
  • Would have been nice to find a spot for Mitchell on the edge, especially with how few players there are there.
  • Tavai playing late in the final preseason game made me wonder if he might actually be cuttable. Maybe I'm just being foolishly optimistic. Not super worried about having only 3 ILB with all the safeties who can fill in there.
  • The only real tough decision at CB is Wade vs Mitchell, and I'm going with potential over experience since this team is likely a few seasons away from competing.
  • I wonder if Peppers isn't quite as safe as we all assumed. I don't remember exactly how late he stayed in there against Vegas, but it seemed like he played pretty deep into the game and allowed some plays vs backups.

Here it is:

It was revised early Sunday morning. Uche is now on it. Sam Roberts has dropped off. Must have been an oversight
I have used your posts to reflect the choices by Reiss.

OFFENSE (23)
1) I would put Montgomery on the 53 instead of Harris. Yes, Taylor gets the roster spot because of the injury to Montgomery.
2) Montgomery and Thornton to the IR Tuesday afternoon after the designation of the 53.
3) I have Ferentz over Russey, but no biggie either way for me.

DEFENSE (21)
4) add McMillan on the 53 after Thornton goes on IR)
5) Mitchell over Bryant

We all seem to have Bledsoe on the 53. Is it really clear that carry 5 safeties when we will carry 5-7 corners. I'm not even counting special teamers Bethel, Davis and Schooler.

Yours: I see you're not a Hambone fan. No Herron either...ok. Surprised you left off both Roberts and Ray. You think they need another year or they are forever PS bound? Davis is better then no fatty at all. Special Teams is good. You hear that mgteich!

At least two of Cardona, H. Anderson, T. Mitchell, J Bethel, and Cody Davis will be cut, and elevated weeks one, two, and three off the practice squad.

I think Ferentz is an automatic for the third player in that role.

If Wilkerson and Thornton are not on the 53 Wednesday morning, they are IRed for the year (as I understand it - I guess Wilkerson can go to the PS while injured?, but will be exposed to waivers?). So there are two players that have to be cut and who will be back in 24+ hours (maybe miss Wednesday's practice?). I assume Ty Montgomery will be IRed for the year.

Hambone, my boy Sherman, Chasin' Hines & Dejarlais were all in the same general grouping in my mind; none of them really stood-out either in a positive or negative way, so I chose the two who might be the most versatile & athletic...

If we had a legit NT, then I would've more strongly considered Roberts or Ray (but not both); because we don't however, Carl's Junior Davis' size wins-out over Roberts' & Ray's pocket-disrupting potential, at least one of whom I would like to have on the PS to see if Lawrence Guy's successor is already in the building... Wise & Anderson can play the 3-Tech role during passing downs...

Thornton will be on the 53. I don't know what they do with Wilkerson.

So probably another veteran player will be exposed.

If the relationship is strong enough, the veteran will buy in. With players like Ferentz and Cardona the team is probably confident, but I don't know about the others. I think the team will accept the loss of a Henry Anderson or J. Bethel if they decide to leave to keep some of these young players.

I think that Belichick has a different approach. If one player is more valuable than the other, he puts him on the 53. If the other players doesn't make the Practice Squad, so be it. I agree that it makes little sense to keep a lesser player on the 53 merely because someone else MIGHT make the Practice Squad.

We won’t only keep 3 OLBs. Langi or Mitchell will stick.

But, perhaps we are talking semantics. I'll move Uche to OLB.

Cap, that's a bit scary. Of course, I am comparing to your opinion of Belichick's 53.

OFFENSE
Nitpick: I wouldn't put K Harris on the 53. On Tuesday afternoon, I would add back Harris or Taylor, plus a new veteran OG.

DEFENSE
I have Anderson as a 3rd DE, essentially taking the roster spot freed up by K Harris not making the 53.
I'm fine with Schooler beating out Davis, but I have Davis.\\

MCMILLAN
will be on the team by WED. The roster spot will be there. Perhaps, Cordona won't be in the 53, and will be re-signed to an extension.

I agree.

But, perhaps we are talking semantics. I'll move Uche to OLB.

For me, Langi and Mitchell are possible, as STers.
You have 3 including Uche. Meaning if one is injured we have no backup and the 2 have to play every snap, and if one of them get injured we can’t run our base defense. Impossible to go into the season with only 3 guys to play the edge.

It's nonsense talk that the team will cut the 4th QB taken in the entire draft after one training camp.

What has happened to this board?

My guess:

QB (3) M.Jones, B.Hoyer, B.Zappe
RB (4) D.Harris, R.Stevenson, T.Montgomery, P.Strong
WR (7) J.Meyers, D.Parker, K.Bourne, T.Thornton, N.Agholor, M.Slater, L.Humphrey

Thorton to IR, then re-sign one of the last cuts or another an unsigned veteran

What has happened to this board?
It's Hoyer's contract, they can't cut him like last year and then re-sign him, because it will be a 3 mil cap hit and dead money (plus another mil or so to re-sign him). That is what made the Zappe pick so infuriating, they either have to waste a roster spot on him or watch him get picked up off waivers. Again, bad team building!!
