What’s wrong is to be exclusively one way. Bend but don’t break is mislabeled and misunderstood. No defense says we are happy to allow you to get to the red zone, then we will care. Rather, prioritizing not giving up a big play loosens the defense and makes it more susceptible to long drives of short gains.
Conversely an attacking style creates more negative plays to keep the offense behind the sticks but is susceptible to more big plays.
Neither is “better” and a good defensive scheme incorporates both respective of down and distance, opponent, the quality of your own offense, etc.
