Josh Gordon wants out of Cleveland

Alcohol testing several times a month? That's obscene.

It has been reported to be as high as 6-8x per month since he's in one of the higher stages.

As mentioned before, it's not easy to fail a test for booze, since your body gets rid of an ounce per hour. You can realistically drink until midnight, then pass a test by 9-10am the next day.

Who knows what's up with Gordon, though? It could be anything.

There would be no reason to offer a conditional 3rd if they are being offered a 2nd.

As you say it takes two to make a deal. Giving up a 2nd round pick for a player who is a Bud Light away from a lifetime ban is a very, very risky move.

of course it is risky, but the upside is you get a top 10 Wr for two years for 2 mill per year. Amd he is a top ten wr whose route tree matches what we do. He is not a guy like Brown, Wallace, or similar that run go routes.

I disagree I think it's easier to fail than many believe - it depends on if you ate and when and how much, etc. I'm sure we've all had nights where we were drinking until midnight and would pass this test, and nights where we were drinking until midnight and would fail it. It can be pretty volatile. And that's assuming you knew when the test was. There is, however, one way to make sure you pass this test when you have already lost your job for the equivalent of 1.5 years due to alcohol and drug related problems.

I do agree with you that the Commish is being unfair by dragging his reinstatment out. I think he gets 60 days per the reinstatement process (Gordon applied on 1/20...so like 7 more days here), but unless Gordon failed to provide the information required of him (in which case, why would he have applied for reinstatment?) then I don't really see the need for the delay. Either the guy acted in good faith regarding his sobriety and suspension terms, or he didn't. Maybe they're just scouring Cleveland or wherever he's been hanging out making sure there's no casino videos of him drunkenly punching women or going into bathrooms with bags full of footballs.

Can't believe he was hanging out with Johnny Idiot in Vegas. Free country and all that, but come on dude. Manziel's gone from being the most polarizing athlete in the country to more simply being widely considered to be an unemployable douche due to alcohol-related problems.

Does the no alcohol ban follow him for his whole nfl career or will it get clear and starts over as long as he stays clean for a couple years?

It appears that the answer to that is somewhat discretionary. Being in 'Stage 3' of the substance abuse program is a career-long designation subjecting one to unannounced random testing at any point, including for alcohol, though there are 'outs' for the alcohol portion of this policy after 12 or 24 month intervals if the player is deemed to be within compliance of their treatment plan (including, but not limited to, not failing any tests). So in Gordon's case it is likely that he would definitely be subject to the alcohol ban for at least the first 24 months after reinstatement, and possibly after that as well.

Pages 18 & 20 of the drug policy section from the link below contain most of the pertinent information. Interesting read all the way through if you're a nerd for things like that (I am).

One thing I think you really hit the nail on the head with is the fact that there will be different variables such as weight, time they stop drinking, way that people metabolize food, and overall tolerance, etc. Those are all going to differ among the specific individual. I wonder if the NFL's tests are blood draws? If so, that may explain a lot; otherwise, the only time I ever witnessed anyone failed a test for alcohol is when they were currently drunk or had gone into the 3-4-5 AM range the previous night. It's possible that there are some new and sophisticated testing methods that may detect the substance for longer amounts of time.

Can't help but wonder who's next..

Hmmmm.

This doesn't exactly give me the vision hes drinking diet cokes and helping out at the church bingo hall on Sundays.

He was already spotted out with Johnny Manziel at UFC 196, which made some question what exactly he was doing. The answer was that he was out with a friend, albeit a friend who has a great deal of his own problems, and the night was likely harmless, at least on Gordon’s end.

Cleveland Browns: Josh Gordon still in limbo

Never gonna happen

Hey, Let's make this pleasant thought day. BB is on a roll. Let's take a shot here. Gordon is scary with his one more drop sentence hanging over every Team he is on now or the future. Hue is cleaning house faster than Howie on the Eagles even thought about. At this rate Hue is going to have $4 billion dollars under the CAP in 2017. Nice to offer Hue picks but he needs more than that.

Someone astutely mentioned the low high game. We start there. I say give the Browns two sixth rounders (we have 100 of them anyway) this year and a third if he was a good soldier and appeared in all the 2016 games, in the 2017 Draft.....plus a couple players just so Hue has some bodies for this year so he can make a splash in 2017. Whoa is you to the poor Brown fans this season.

They need a Guard and WR desperately just to fill a line up. Two picks and a definite-maybe in 2017 is a big haul for someone that Roger will have a 24/7 tail (ex-KGB) on Gordon if he joins the Pats. He best not even use salad dressing. Now add a couple players.

Two ideas?
-Maybe a fresh start for Aaron Dobson is in the cards.

-We extended Kline. His salary is workable. With Cooper that pushes him down the depth chart but he is still serviceable and was decent in the beginning of last year.

You think two sixths, a third and two players that will probably not see much time here, are fair wampum for Gordon? Maybe the two above make sense.

We understand Gordon wants out but he is still a huge gamble for the Pats.

The standard, "You are crazy, the Browns will never do that" response is expected, but analyze this move for both Teams.

Kline is a need for them. They lost 2 key O line studs. Kline is an Ohio kid. He was a starter here. He might turn out better than John Cooper but you can go with potential if you are the Pats.

Dobson is in his final contract year anyway. The Browns are not bogged down to keep him if he flops there, but it is a fresh start for the kid. He is a throw in but fills a Browns need. They need WR after they cut Bowe, they lost Travis Benjamin to FA and Hartline is coming back from IR. If Dobson comes back to his rookie season stats it is a good trade for the Browns. If Gordon screws up the Browns get nada. There is no guarantee on Gordon that he says clean.

Nobody is going to give the Browns a high picks for Gordon even if they decide to trade him. Is this enough?

Thoughts.

DW Toys

DW, I'd definitely pursue something like that if I'm the Patriots. That's worth the risk. If you lose out, hey, you lose out. If it only works for one gigantic year, then hey, that's sweet. Anything more than that and it's all gravy.

Cleveland is in a tough spot with him. He's incredibly talented but the Browns completely suck. He's a piece they could move, but nobody is gonna pay huge for him because one more strike and he's pretty much done for. Why have a crappy QB behind a crappy OL try to throw to a frustrated Gordon, who is at risk at any moment for ending his career, when they could turn Gordon into some somewhat useful pieces?

I can see Cleveland holding onto him, but I can also see them willing to make a deal. If I'm NE, I pursue it. Just imagine an offensive set of Gordon, Edelman, Gronk, Bennett, and Lewis? That's 5 *elite* receiving options there. Not just good. Not even just great. But elite.

You could run that set every play and you could do so much out of it. Even if you subbed Donald Brown in for Lewis (to minimize the hits on Lewis) that offense would be virtually impossible to stop. You could attack every dimension of the field. On the ground, in-between the tackles, outside, short, medium, long, between the hash marks, or outside. You could run crossing routes or go routes or pick plays or screens or play-action or...anything. You're gonna get huge mismatches somewhere.
