My biggest problem with Mac first 2 yrs is that he ignores receivers wide open in the flats, and he checks down to them too late when downfield plays don't materialize, and by then defenders have already closed down on those short routes. He needs to take those easy play (which the Bills and Phins ALWAYS use against us) and rack up that YAC.

That is something veteran QBs develop much later, he's likely going thru his progressions so he doesn't see the open receiver yet because he hasn't progressed to that read yet. Once they've been playing awhile, they can start to get to a deeper mental game where they can understand the defenses and what they're trying to do, and what weaknesses that will expose relative to the play they're running

Year 3 will be big for Mac and will determine a lot about his future here.. he certainly wasn't able to do much of that last year, when Fatty Matty took audibles and other things away from him, likely because he himself couldn't fully understand them enough yet to coach them

When has his ability to complete check downs consistently ever been in doubt? His short accuracy is great.
He had trouble hitting checkdowns 10 feet away, throwing them in the dirt.

Everyone is in such a hurry to get rid of Bourne. He was our best receiver in 2021 before getting into Patricia's doghouse in 2022.
And BB has been saying positive things about him this year.

seems it’s not everyone, thanks goodness. Just a few posters that have adopted Bourne as their anti-binky.

The most important part of practice is decision making. Let’s practice making risky decisions doesn’t lead to good game results.
Not necessarily. And BB just discussed this last week before the pre season game. Practice is also to see what you can and can't do. Try it in practice if it doesn't work then, well you know what you can't do in a game.

That is what practice is for. It's not to just work on the things you do well.

So from what I gather. The OL and offense is still mediocre (after bill invested nothing in improving it)

And the defense can't stop a semi decent offense (despite bill investing everything in it)

Sounds like the last few years...

Jim Murray on 98.5 just read a slew of discouraging reports from people who were at the practice...Patriots offense was "hitting singles"...not great to hear

Inb4 people dismiss this reporting just as they do Bedard's. Not positive information about Pats = stupid media, trolling, etc.

Nothing wrong with this reporting, and there's also nothing wrong with pointing out that the line will be better with Onwenu and Strange, and that the rookies will improve with each practice.

Rhamondre had the 5th lowest yards per target in football last year and had Zeke qualified he would have had the lowest yards per target in football. I don't think defenses are scared of either of those guys in the passing game. Both have solid hands and Zeke is great at pass pro, but that's about it. Still would love to have a real 3rd down back.

You're faulting Rham because of last year's numbers??? Seriously??

Yeah. The current issues are due to pressure, which is on the offensive line. The offensive line is down their starting left & right guards, and probably also their starting right tackle who is currently playing right guard. Plus, while Brown's out there, it's only his second padded practice, so there's bound to be some rust.

Obviously it would be great if they were just killing it regardless, but it's easy to see why things are the way they are. Theoretically getting all (or even most) of their starting linemen back into the fold helps with pressure and then that lessened pressure means the passing game can progress a bit more beyond the quick dump-offs. When the starting line is out there and there's still big issues, or if the starting line just never comes to fruition due to some of these guys going on IR, then it's time to grow a bit more concerned (IMO).

The part I'm more worried about is the defense. I thought they'd produce a few more juicy ones today. Hearing Jordan Love was able to manage himself against them isn't really the best news... I have higher expectations of the unit than that. We'll see.

And the most important thing for the qb to work on is decision making.
Let’s face it, if Mac Jones doesn’t know what space he can fit a ball into by this point, he’s screwed. To suggest he should be out there in year 3 learning what an interception is boggles my mind. What he need to be learning and sharpening is how fast he makes the right decision. Making the wrong one to prove it’s wrong isn’t helping anyone.
He has reads, ignoring them to see if he can go against his coaching and make it work is practicing wrong.

This is a good perspective. Josh Allen didn't pick up on this stuff until year 4. But then his idiot OC went away from it.
