Thought I would start the gdt a little early today as there is a lot of interest and anticipation. It's great to have football back!!

Some of what I'll be looking for tonight:

-O-line
-Afernee Jennings
-Jack Jones
-Marcus Jones
-Chase Hines
-LaBryan Ray
-Tre Nixon
-Tyquan
-Sam Roberts
-Ronnie Perkins
-Cam McGrone

Of course, hoping for no injuries!!!!!

Go Pats!!!!!

My initial thoughts on tonights scrimmage.

1. I really dislike the fact that this will be the first real hitting these guys have had. Pardon me for musing, but back in the day we would be hitting in camp HARD for more than 2 weeks before we had a preseason game. So sure I worry about injuries going into the game, and I worry about them more because of the way these guys are coddled to the point throwing into a game situation with having their bodies prepared for the conflict they will be participatingin.

2. As for the game it self and what I will be looking for, I'll be closely watching the big boys, the guys on the OL and DL's. I want to see if Barmore and Godcheaux can anchor and disrupt the middle as I hope they will do this season. A lot of people poo-pooed the PFF grades of Godcheax, and a lot were outraged by his extension. Well in this camp (so far) God has popped on many occasions and has looked worthy of that extension. Let's see if it translates on to the field in a Game situation.

3. The OL has been the issue of the day given the new blocking system (which might not be so new, given Dante's remarks) They SHOULD be the focus for all of us to watch over all of the preseason games. Are the improving? Are they cohesive? And of course, is the running game effective? VERY important to realize this is a work in progress, so I'm not looking for much in this game. THIS game will create the baseline of what we HOPE we will see as we move forward.

4. Of course I'm looking forward to see the new LB look. I'll be looking to see how they fill, and their angles to the ball. Also it will be interesting to see how this new found speed translates into better underneath coverage.

5. My biggest worry now is how the CB's look. THAT however is almost impossible on network TV. Hopefully a few replays will give us a least a glimpse of what is going on with this group.

6. Note that Mac Jones and the receivers are rather low on this list. That is because I doubt we see him get more than on series in this game, if that. So in a game where the subs will play a lot, watching the QB play and receivers isn't going to tell us a lot about the offense going forward.

7. So all in all, this will be a nice scrimmage and ANY football is good football for us game starved nation of fan. However that being said, I caution fans NOT to read into the results of this game, rather that to look at individuals and how they are doing in their match ups to judge the players not the team. They are NOT a team yet. It is too early in the process for them to be a team. THAT is something I'll be hoping to see develop as the preseason goes on.

So tonight we feast. Football is back and the fun begins a new. then tomorrow we can all spew our hopes and fears about this team and where they are in the great scheme of things.

Tonight's just about seeing how the bottom of the roster performs when the lights come on. Unless a guy is a train wreck, I doubt the coaches give it a ton of weight in their decisions.

The in-week practices with other teams will tell us a lot more than tonight. They will feature genuine competition between the players who will get the vast majority of time on the field.

I'll be interested to see what front they come out with on D. Lazar predicted they would go to more of a 4-3 look months ago, but it seems like they are still going with a 3-4 look.

Other players I'll be watching:

Thronton
LB's
rookie CB's
Strong
Barmore

I don't care that the starters aren't playing. First football in 6 months! Just hoping for some fun side stories to emerge, and no injuries.

100% As far as those head protector caps they're wearing in practice, I strongly dislike giving guys protection that they don't get in the game. Sounds like a good way to enforce bad habits.

Is Cole Strange not playing?

While I'll be watching a bit of everything, but my thoughts circle mainly around 1 player tonight. Thornton.

I have said again and again this is a league where 'skill position' guys have become more and more important. In the past they were massively over hyped (at least WRs were, and CBs were just a little, back when you could mug WRs at the line and a safety could go head hunting). But in today's game, particularly the past 7 or 8 years it has truly become about building a good cast to support your pass catchers, QB and CBs. All you REALLY need to do with the other spots on the team is be good enough that you can't be exploited by a top end group. You can lose the battle while giving an acceptable level of resistance, but you can't get run over so much that it throws the game out of whack and begins to really impact the above 3 named positions. The rules have changed, and the game is being enforced in such a way that these positions too important.

This is why while I remain a fan of this team, i haven't been particularly hopeful recently. We've spent more than any team on our WRs/TEs. and we have at best an average group talent wise. Lots of solid players but no stars. We need a star. Not a good player. Not a #1. We need a STAR! We need at least an Evans level player. But ideally a Chase, Adams, Kupp or Hill. Someone who strikes that kind of fear into the other team.

We need it now, and we currently don't have it. Unless Thornton can deliver it.

Looking forward to whining tonite about 3rd stringers who won't be on the roster come September. Us fans need a few preseason GDTs to get back into it as well.

Daboll has had success vs the Pats and BB. Remember the Cleveland game where was OC?

Its a meaningless preseason game that means a lot. While you're not dancing on the roof over a win you dont want to see the team go out and look horrible.

Typically this means the player will not play...was hoping to see Tyquan!!!

No injuries! Very key that everybody comes out of this healthy!

Zappe needs to play well, especially with hoyer missing time a few days ago!

I am hoping to see:

  • No injuries
  • Disciplined football - limited mental errors
  • Let's take some chances - put guys on an island, blitz unexpectedly
  • No injuries
  • If the speedy receivers are on the field, then give them routes for speed. No bubble screens and 5 yard outs
  • NO INJURIES!
