Since the waiver process only happens on Monday, it looks like a three day weekend media feeding frenzy.

It's usually by the noon of the next day, so it starts on Monday and is concluded by noon on Tuesday if no team claims him.

If he's claimed on Monday, is the waiver order effected by the weekend's results?

Never said otherwise. I was talking about how if the team told OBJ that his services were no longer necessary this season and told him to go home for the rest of the season. That was what a lot of people thought would happen including the person I was responding to in that post you responded to. That is against the CBA.

I always said that that this was a mutual thing for them to figure out how to deal with releasing him. If they were forcing him to sit out of practice against his will, he would have been screaming bloody murder.
went back and took a look at this particular issue...

Apparently, prior to the 2006 CBA, Teams could indeed bury players on the bench or whatever / deactivate them for as long as they wanted... That was upheld in 2005 by an arbitration ruling in Terrell Owens / Philthydelpia Iggles squabble... In the 2006 CBA, as you stated & which is why they mention the 2006 CBA i guess (though, just saying 42-1-xvii in the the current CBA would work and be more correct) the rule expressly prohibits teams from burying players for more than 4 weeks specifically due to conduct detrimental ... " The Non-Injury Grievance Arbitrator’s decision in Terrell Owens (Nov. 23, 2005) is thus expressly overruled as to any Club decision to deactivate a player in response to the player’s conduct." (2020 CBA § 42-1-??) ...

Man that ruling really pissed off the players if they got that included in the CBA the very next year lol...

While I think that it would get overruled, there might be some wiggle room for the Browns here because of technicalities, because both the team and the player agreed to the circumstances at hand, that there was no formal suspension etc etc ad nauseum...

Interesting, theoretically at least, to me (and maybe nobody else)

I don’t think so since the Monday night game would not have been played yet…so it’s whatever the waiver order as of today.

Over the Cap pointed out that the Texans are getting away with it for the whole season because Watson doesn't want to come back. So yes, you can get away deactivating a player indefinitely if the player is agreeable with being deactivated.

Except its not the Team... Its the player... doesn't want is a kind way of putting it... more like he refuses...

The Texans should really go after that contract and his bonuses... Not sure how the mechanics would work, but they are royally getting screwed over at this point... Suspend him/Failure to whatever... stop paying him... toll his contract, keep him from reaching the next years guaranteed 35 million or whatever it is...

Lots of hot dumb takes saying that this takes Patriots out of the running. WRONG! It actually increases the likelihood that he ends up with us (if he choses to sign with us) after sliding through waivers because nobody will want to pick up that $7.25 for just half a season's rental. This was a deliberate move.

Good I hope that means we won’t go anywhere near that pond scum.We have 4 million in cap space. Yes we can restructure some contracts to make room. Not for him.

I'll go against the grain. OBJ would actually be a perfect fit on the Pats. Baker likes throwing to the outside and to the first read and is risk averse as far as taking a big shot for OBJ. That was always a problem there and it was more of a chemistry issue. This Pats offense has solid TE's and is full of #3 borderline #2 receivers... but it really needs a strong number 1 that defenses need to account for. He'd be an awesome deep target for the impact play for Jones and free up everyone else. It's actually one of the more ideal fits for a need this team has.

THAT SAID..... His high waiver cost means he will 100% go to free agency and there will be a bidding war. The only thing we can truly offer him is the fact that he would definitly be a number 1 here. Green Bay has Adams, KC has Hill and Kelce, etc. BUT all those teams are far closer to being contenders so he might like the glitz of that over coming onto a rebuild and gambling that Mac develops properly enough for him to look good and get his numers. So it's debateable if we even have a realistic shot at him and he probably is going to get some substantial deal and will Belichick pay it is the primary question. If he clears waivers, he's 29, not a spring chicken but definitly should have 2-3 solid years left and he should be aiming for one more longterm payout before he turns 30. So I don't see a "getting him on the cheap". I see a "giving him something solid with years on it instead of a one year big payout".

Can he play defense?
Chiefs need a solid number 2. It's become apparent that teams have found ways to play cover 2 and limit Hill and Kelce (I think Kelce lost a step as well which is contributing to this) and now a lack of depth is being shown because the guys Mahomes always counted on aren't as reliable and there isn't a wide open guy to hit on nearly every player, and the rest of the cast isn't good.

They need help on defense, but they damn near almost won a Super Bowl with their offense in 2018 and their defense isn't as bad as back then.

Exactly. Carefully calibrated friendly move to allow him to pick his own destination. Makes the Pats way more likely. He will absolutely pass through waivers now, and so his eventual destination is no longer going to be one of the teams currently in the basement.

The minute he pulls a diva move, he's cut with no strings attached, and he knows it. He furthermore knows that is the only kind of contract that BB is going to offer him. So if he chooses to sign here, that means he's willing to take that chance.

So, given all those conditions in our favor, why wouldn't you at least give it a shot?

If the later report is correct that a team claiming him will be on the hook for $7.25million then the negotiations did not convert to signing bonus. That’s much better for him, he still has this year’s guaranteed money and the ability to pick his destination. I suspect the negotiations may have added a contingency to the guarantee to relieve the Browns by offsetting any salary he gets from a subsequent contract for this season. Not entirely sure but believe they could do that.

It looks like the $7.25mill is what’s not yet paid in game checks for 2021. In other words, just what it would’ve been if the cut him last Monday or Tuesday.

But theoretically can’t claim him till 4 PM on Tuesday. So maybe. Weird rare tricky question

Fair enough. My main concern is Mac. OBJ has a way of putting his QB’s back against a wall. This kid is looking promising early and I want him thinking clearly and keeping the pressure level down to hopefully strengthen his progress.
If OBJ is on a short leash possible and that has been explained to him up front and can somehow have the Patriots Way win him over and he blocks, decoys and makes plays when his number is called. Then lets have at it. Most of all keep your mouth shut. He is a very good talent. I just cannot stand his very selfish diva tactics. I will never say never. And I have been wrong many times. We will see
