Patriots Rumor If OBJ is released by the Browns and is unclaimed, do you want him in NE on the cheap? (Update: Signed by Rams)

A report indicating the Patriots are potentially in the market for this player, or have expressed or plant to express interest.

That doesn’t make sense to me, because Cleveland couldn’t arbitrarily convert the balance of his salary to a signing bonus without his agreement. So that means they did not have the claimed leverage.

They did him a favor by agreeing to structure the deal in such a way that he wouldn't end up being claimed on waivers by a bottom-of-the-barrel team. This way he hits free agency and he can negotiate with any team. The Browns also saved cap space by converting part of the salary into a roster bonus - if he isn't claimed then they are off the hook for that bonus. So it was a win-win, designed so he wouldn't be claimed because nobody wants to be on the hook for $7.5m for the remainder of the season.

I believe there is a good chance he ends up with the Patriots on a low dollar short-term deal. He'd be highly motivated and on his best behavior. Maybe not the second coming of Randy Moss, but at least some chance he improves the team.

Interesting. I guess this means whoever wants him faces a big dilemma, sign him off waivers and accept the hit next week, or let him go to FA and negotiate based on what he expected to get paid. Well played.

...
Thus, if he’s claimed on waivers, he gets the remaining salary and the roster bonus from his new team. If he becomes a free agent, the Browns are on the hook for the remaining salary but not the roster bonus.

It’s believed that the roster bonus is in the range of $3 million, which would put the salary in the range of $4.25 million.

If claimed on waivers, Beckham gets it all from his next team. If unclaimed, he gets his remaining Browns salary (but not the roster bonus) plus whatever he gets from his next team for the rest of 2021. And he breaks even if he gets the amount of the roster bonus as salary from his next team.

As the source explained it, Beckham took the deal because Cleveland could have converted the balance of his remaining salary to a signing bonus, reducing his base salary to the minimum and making it much more likely that he’d be claimed on waivers by a team for which he’d rather not play. That was, at the end of the day, the leverage the Browns had to get him to agree to a structure that will help the Browns save some money.

The Browns will save, at a minimum, the amount of the roster bonus. If someone claims the contract on waivers, the Browns will save it all.

This makes far more sense than what was reported this morning. The report this morning was basically that the Browns caved and gave Beckham everything he wanted. Considering the Browns had the majority of the leverage, I couldn’t believe even the Browns were that dumb.

This still means odds are good that he will clear waivers and he will sign with his next team with an one year veteran minimum deal maybe with some incentives. Although there is more of a chance he will be claimed off of waivers.

Honestly what would it hurt at this point? The receivers the Patriots have aren't terrible so adding him could only help. If he turns into a problem you let him go and the team is no worse off.

This isn't like the Brown situation where they actually needed him and when he was let go a week later the offense was screwed the rest of the season.

On an incentive laden deal for little guaranteed dollars sure, but work him out first and test those shoulders.

Pats, Bucs, Seahawks, Packers, Cardinals, Chiefs. The Bucs don't need him but he'd still get his best chance to play with Brady, even if for half a season, until afterwards he can sign elsewhere. Unless he plays out of his mind.

How about 7000 receiving yards and 51 receiving TDs? N'Keal Harry could play for 20 NFL seasons and he'd never reach those numbers.
No one is saying he is a nkeal harry. i am just asking why is this hyped so much as a difference maker thats all. not saying he is a good receiver. but he isnt larry F or calvin johnson in their primes.

Wonder if Schefter knows something here (as in, he’s speaking on behalf of OBJ’s agent).

This scenario is very unrealistic. IMO, the Browns deliberately waited to release him at the end of the day on Friday to avoid this scenario. Has the NFLPA signed off on his revised contract? He hits waivers Monday morning, and this doesn't get concluded until Tuesday afternoon, IIRC. Then he has to pass physical, sign the contract, and learn enough of the playbook in time to justify being active by next Sunday. Wednesday is typically installation day.

And then there's his sprained shoulder. If he's going to be effective the rest of the season and thereafter, the wise choice would be for him to be inactive for the next few weeks.

Wilkerson gets elevated, plays well, we trade him and Nkeal for a conditionals 23 picks, we sign OBJ, then win the SB

It checks out, I did the math

Apparently the Browns coach told his players OBJ is not with the team anymore. Not sure what the exact words were but I find that a bit weird. Lets not forget though that this guy pays chicks to fly coast to coast to take a dump on his face. Do we really want that in the locker room?

And….?

Now we are going to criticize him for participating in clinical research? Shameful.

So? The Patriots have never had a Larry F or Calvin J and won 6 Superbowls. Hell we had Randy Moss for 2 and a half seasons and couldn't quite win it all in 2007.

The reason we might have interest is that OBJ presents a very good receiving option who would upgrade the roster, and we wouldn't have to gave up any draft capital to acquire him.

For the rest of this year? Yes. After that, no. We need to do everything we can to give Mac help so he can develop. We thought we did okay enough this off season, but we didn't. So we should take this chance and sign a player that will help put talent on the field.

I like the idea of Mac Jones throwing to OBJ. Would love to see it happen even if it's just for the rest of this year!

OBJ had to agree to tossing the contract, right?
Did OBJ agree to canceling the contract, in return for picking his spot?

Next, OBJ decides: This and Only This Team.

The only question then would be how
much the team he chooses is
willing to pay.

Browns would have no choice.
On the hook for the 8 anyway

They may be completely beat here.
*
Would be satisfactory karmic payback for that cornerback
(what was his name?)
Went on strike, refused to play, refused to honor
the contract he had signed
while demanding another one.

Mike Florio: look out for Seahawks, 49ers, and Saints to show interest in OBJ. OBJ prefers Seahawks...

I don't think we have to worry about him disrupting any chemistry on the passing offense considering there really is none ATM lol Whatever momentum they gained from the Jets game in our passing offense has been thwarted the last 2 weeks. Hope we make a push for him.
