OT: my brother is in the ICU (update 9/17, Setting Sail for Parts Unknown)

We're going down to Bangor to say goodbye to him tomorrow. I'm going to have to be stoic and take the lead because my parents are devastated.

I am so, so sorry.

Be strong for your family, but remember to take care of yourself If for no other reason than the sake of your folks.

I am hoping for the best for all of you.

^^^
Wishing your brother a peaceful passing, as terrible as it is when it comes early, and wishing you and yours a steady healing journey ahead. (& If you are not strong for them that's okay too.)

We just got the call.

You know the call. The one where the dotors admit they don't know what else to try and the patient isn't improving.

That call.

The one where the fungus infestation and the diabetes and the kidney failure and the necrosis all combine, one after the other, to create an unsurmountable hurdle for the medical team

I thought he was doing better, but now he's developed a pneumonia to go with everything else, and the doctors don't think his body can fight any more. Also his immune response is WAY short of what they were hoping it was. They're asking us the question you never want to be asked when you have a loved one in the ICU. The question that goes "how much are you willing to put him through?"

Yeah, THAT call.

The family network is beginning to rally around us. People are calling in from literally all over the country as the family realizes that it's actually the beginning of the end. We're probably going to make the call to pull the proverbial plug. This is not what any of us wanted.

That's horrible. So sorry to hear that. Not sure what else to say. I'm glad that you were there for him.

Sorry to hear, but hold out faith for a miracle. But if he is conscious try to get a recording of him saying I love you. You will want these videos/audio recording of even the final days of his voice in the future. At first these kind of things will be a gut punch but later in time will bring comfort and happy cries.

It is hard to do but remain strong. The family needs to pull together and eat healthy and healthy is the key word.

We can't because he's intubated but I took his hand and saw his eyes light up like a Christmas tree as I said a few words. I could see the love in his eyes and I even made him chuckle once. That will be how I remember this moment. Thak God he was aware enough for that

Tough tough time for all of you guys. My thoughts are with you and all your family. So sorry.

Very sorry to hear it’s taken a turn for the worst. Prayers for your brother, you, and your family.

They are letting family members inside the ICU for intubated patients in Covid protocols? That's fortunate for him. They're not allowing that in our local hospitals in Palm Beach. Nurses don't want to deal with family members. They're stressed enough.

Thoughts are with your bro.

No. But we made the choice to put him on comfort care IE end of life care and that allowed them to bend the rules and let us in 1 or 2 at a time. Also he has repeatedly tested negative for covid

You, your brother and all your loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

Sorry to hear that. Positive thoughts your way. I hope he makes it through okay. I also hope this gives you your own wake-up call. I remember you posted your Facebook profile back in the day when you lost your job, and you were either at, or close to, 500 pounds. That’s a short lifespan and a litany of problems down the road if you don’t change that. Not trying to be mean or anything… just telling you like it is.
Good message, perhaps right heart, ABSOLUTELY NOT THE RIGHT TIME! Best to you and your family Simpleton.

Honestly I know where Kontra's coming from and it's a well intentioned place. I don't get offended easily anyway. It's not like he's wrong either.

Thanks for standing up for me but also please don't. I can take these things in the spirit they're intended rather than necessarily the way they come across

don't know u well enough to know whether or not that sat well. Was just sticking up for a brother I knew was hurting and didn't want single other thing being added to his plate.

I hear ya. Thanks for that. But I'm a big boy :p

We've been lavishing attention on my brother, and he seems to be reviving a little. Taking more interest in things, and actually being able to talk a bit and have conversations. today has been surprisingly hopeful
