Belichick criticism mega-thread

I've been watching classic games on YouTube of some of the great teams of the 90's and I see one trend of why it all ended much like the Pats eventually did - horrible drafts. Teams I was watching were the 90's Cowboys who were overmatched by '96, 9ers who aged badly and couldn't hit on impact players before Steve Young's KO in '99. Packers had a lot of high pick blunders. '99 Rams were just atrocious after Vermeil left.

While the Pats had a very long run, they benefitted where the teams listed above did not as QB's and other players where taking a lot of shots that added up.

That's called building. After his playoff season, he wasn't given the chance because of the owner. That's the whole point of this entire discussion.
I guess if you're building an outhouse you're still building. So then yes, crown Bill the builder.

That's exactly right. Why you should hold on to the elite QB you have rather than join the queue hoping for one.

I don't blame BB for Brady walking. I have never had job nor lived at the same address for 20 years. It was just time.

The only thing I blame BB for is for misjudging Brady's longevity.....the same as I did. In 2014, I expected Brady to retire in 2018 at the latest.....

It is what it is.

When teams pick near the bottom of the draft every year, it happens. The blue-chip players they drafted prior to being a good team get old or too expensive to keep. Same thing happened to us.

Yeah he really did badly bringing all the talent to New England. Biggest failure in league history

And when he does it again in the next 2 years, all you Belichick haters will deny you wrote any of this

See this is what I am talking about with Team Bill. It always goes to "Oh well I guess you don't think Bill is good". Wrong. Again. This discussion was in regards to Cleveland. It is okay I didn't besmirch your hero's current tenure.

It will only happen if Bill drafts well and I mean finding some impact players he's had a very hard time finding since Jamie Collins. And he's about to lose one of his only hits in the draft with Thuney.

His last few drafts (2019 in particular) is what eventually ended this amazing run.

So little faith. The guy has been stellar in bringing in FAs, and for once he has draft capital. Even with Goodell taking a draft pick from us yet again.

I'll say this again since you absolutely do not get it: he was 3-1 when the owner not only wrecked him but the team. Deliberately.

He's had the most draft capital and moves around the most than any team for many years. Goodell had nothing to do with him taking Harry and passing over AJ Brown, Samuel and Metcalf TWICE!

Yes, I have little faith as the last 3 chips were from the 2009-2012 draft classes. It's been bad since.

I mean what did you expect from Little Steven? Of course he's defending Papi.

You totally ignore Art Modell blowing up the franchise.
Belichick was the head coach in Cleveland for 5 years... they sucked in 4 and were nothing special at all in the 5th. Belichick was not a good head coach or team builder in Cleveland. Go back and look at his drafts, they were terrible. The very first draft after he left, the new management was drafting hall of famers and yet it still took them several years to rebuild the mess left behind by Belichick.

Now Belichick has to clean up his own mess in New England, so far it's not going so well. Meanwhile Brady is still winning Super Bowls. Neither is surprising.

I said he was a game manager. That doesn’t make you average. If you are a really good game manager, you can be a very good QB. You can’t be elite though because you are not asked to do anything over and above all that often. But efficiency is required for a great game manager and only very good QBs are really efficient.
When you take a team that is 5-13 and go 14-3 leading them to a Super Bowl title with a game-winning drive in your very first season, you're elite.
When you win 3 Super Bowls (named MVP in 2) in your first 4 seasons with a franchise that had won 0 Super Bowls in it's previous 41 years of existence, you're elite.
When you're 9-0 with 5 game-winning drives in your first 3 trips to the postseason, you're elite.
What don't you understand?

It was clawhammer

He dismissed Bill's importance on every level until I called him out and his response was...

"Sure, Bill did some good things"
I'm not ashamed of my opinions so I don't need anyone "calling me out" to elaborate my position. Yes, I said that, Belichick has done some good things. And I said it in response to your obtuse claim that I think Belichick gets 0% of the credit for the Patriots Dynasty. Belichick gets more than 0%. If you want then I'll come up with a complete credit pie chart but that sounds rather tedious. Brady takes up the most space of any individual on the chart but he doesn't occupy 100% of the chart.

In summary I think Brady is the greatest player in the history of the league and he made everyone around him in New England better including Belichick. He's doing the same thing now in Tampa Bay including with Arians who Brady is going to put in the hall of fame.

Belichick is an average GM who has had some really long droughts in his career (particularly with drafts). I think Belichick the GM failed Brady miserably in 2006, 2013 and 2019. He otherwise surrounded Brady with enough talent to be productive and even still some of those seasons were Brady making good with an adequate supporting cast.

I think Belichick is an excellent defensive coordinator, although the 'bend but don't break' philosophy has backfired on the team in some big spots (2011 & 2017). I don't think he's a great head coach because all of his success is tied directly to Brady. Belichick is a failure as a head coach without Brady. The record is proof. And as a head coach he egregiously let Brady down in 2015 and 2017.

I don't think Brady the quarterback has ever let down his head coach. He gave Belichick 6 game-winning Super Bowl drives and he had the team in position to win the other three. That's phenomenal by any standard. I don't think Belichick had the proper appreciation or respect for what he had in Brady and ultimately he hastened the demise of the Patriots Dynasty. I guess that makes me a "crybaby" or whatever, I don't care, it's how I feel about it. That said, what Brady accomplished in Tampa Bay this season was pretty satisfying to watch. It validated his legacy further and I think validated 'Team Brady' if that's what you want to call it.

But no, Brady doesn't get 100% of the credit while Belichick gets 0%. Brady gets more. A lot more. Although, sure, Bill did some good things. He came up with a great defensive plan against the Rams in SB 36 (although the defense did run out of gas). Ditto SB 53. A+ offseasons for 2004, 2007 and 2014. There's more but I'll leave it for Team Bill.

Okay. Dynasty derailed. I get it.
The Browns got thumped by the Steelers, a team that proceeded to reach the SB the next year, and the AFCCG two years later (With a divisional round whipping by the Patriots in between). But, if only...

The last few drafts were poor but he has NOT had draft capital. Probably the least amount of it in the league. Look at 2017 and 2016:

First 2 day picks: 2017: 3, 4. 2016: 2, 3, 3, 4. No 1st rounders either year, picking at the bottom of rounds both years.

By the way, 2018 SB win was indeed due to people in those draft classes like Edelman (MVP), Hightower and McCourty. But it was also due to Gilmore, Sony Michel, Trent Brown, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon, Trey Flowers, Guy, Van Noy, Elandon Roberts, Jason McCourty, Burkhead, Harmon, JC Jackson, James White, Mitchell etc.

These are all players that came after.

What are you doing here? I don't get it. Insults, confrontation and memes. What a colossal waste of your time.
I've been here for 15 years. I think my posting history and the 100s of other posters I happily interact with speaks for itself.

I think the larger question is what are you doing here?

You didn't answer my question. I suspect because you don't have one.
