Luckily because we have BB in charge, these aren't the only two options. Not even close. I get what you are trying to get at with the Q, but not feelin' it.

Right now with Brady counting 36.7 mill the patriots gave just over 21 mill. If they give him 30 mill spreading half of it over 3 years that saves them 10 million. ( this is only 12 mill less than letting him walk).
Why do you say that right now Brady counts 36.7M and they only have 21M? Brady's contract is void, so the only thing that counts if he's not extended is 13.5M in dead cap.

The dead cap is already part of what is available which is about $42M w/o Brady's new contract.

If they re-sign him, my understanding is the $13.5M gets rolled into whatever new deal there is (which would be spread out like you said). This is a question since I'm not clear how the $13.5 M gets handled if he re-signs.

I hate the Cassell argument, he never was supposed to be a starter or a heir to Brady his purpose in life was to be a backup, BB went 11-5 with a backup not a starter says a lot about his coaching ability.

Except they lost to anybody with a winning record and played an incredibly easy schedule. They struggled against the duds that year. Only close game against a team with a winning record was Indy which to be fair they might have pulled out expect for a borderline penalty on David Thomas.

Just as 1985 & '86 Pats going 11-5 says a lot about coaching, talent and effort from players since they were starting what was no better than an adequate backup QB.

With McDaniels, Judge and Caserio as potential people departing this offseason, those are significant losses
Josh can go.

At least I can watch without the explosion in my head every critical drive screaming for them to run the ball, which they don't, with more than enough time and all our timeouts. Keep the defense honest. When you line up in the shot gun with an empty backfield, you take away half the things the defense has to try to stop. Handing it off is easier than completing a pass.

Blew up in SB vs. Philly

Blew up Saturday.

And why not sneak it on the goal line?

Winning one Super Bowl is better than being average to mediocre for a bunch of years.

I like the debate we had several years back when the Giants beat us in the Super Bowl and then went several years of being mediocre.

Would you rather have:

One guaranteed Super Bowl and then five years of sub .500 seasons

or

Six years of 11 or more wins, winning the division, getting a bye most years, getting to the AFC championship five years, going to the Super Bowl three or four of those years but never winning.

Um...they beat the team that lost the Super Bowl by 4 points by a score of 47 to 7. Cassel was 20-36 for 345 yards and 3TDs. They beat the Jets who ended up 9-7. They beat the Dolphins who were 11-5 and eventual division champs 48-28. Cassel was 30-45 for 415 yards, 3 TDs and an INT in that one.

With a QB who hadn't started a game since high school.

Only if it's an extension, not if he goes to free agency and then signs.

The franchise is at somewhat of a crossroads. In trying to understand what people think I wonder how people would feel about being given 2 options.

1) win the Sb next year then go about 4-12 for 5 years straight

2) win 8-10 games each of the next 6 years make the playoffs a couple of times maybe win a post season game or 2 but no SB.

Which would you prefer.
I’m going to try to do it as a poll (never done one before so it may fail) but might be a question that requires explanation too.

To me there’s only one obvious answer. And that’s take the Super Bowl. We get high draft picks all those years after that from the 4-12s with a chance to build toward something great. 6 years Of 8-10 wins and missing playoffs some of those years would put us middle of the pack which is a terrible place to be.

That's great and all, but it's a totally false dichotomy. It assumes facts not in evidence. It assumes a metric boatload of facts not in evidence.

what’s a false dichotomy? I certainly didn’t create one. The OP gave choices and my choice is based on the info I was given.

No. The cap math that says they have 21mill+ is counting Brady’s 36.7 mill. That’s 30 mill salary and 6.75 Sb amort.
If he resigns/extends/whatever his hit will be 6.75 plus the new salary and prorated share of new signing bonus.
If he is not signed 13.5 probably hits this year (I believe they could use the old June cut rule parameters and spread it over 2 years)
So without Brady they have either 51mill+ or about 45mil

If they give him the same 30 mill his 2020 salary calls for and make 20 mill a Sb and add a year (2022) they will have about 35 mill of cap space before any other moves

If you want extend it forward. 1 SB win every 5 years and 4-12 the other 4 repeatedly or 8-10 wins every year indefinitely but never a SB.

That doesn't change anything. It's still assuming facts not in evidence. Is the SB guaranteed? Who says they would have 8-10 wins indefinitely?

I was referring to the original poll.

It’s in the question.
The question is which result would you prefer.
It’s not that complicated.

Winning a SB vs NOT winning a SB. This is hard for some?

Some people on here and in this thread have expressed that they would rather be consistently competitive Without a Sb than be consistently bad but have a Sb season mixed in.

That's the point. It's a stupid, meaningless question. I don't prefer either. Hows that?
