I don’t know. I might want 6 years of guaranteed competitiveness with a decent chance to go to the playoffs every year over shooting one wad in SB55, then fizzling out as a miserable team for 5 years straight.

Not me. Take the Lombardi. It took forty years to get the first one. They're not easy to get regardless of the magic we've witnessed over the last twenty years. I'll have no problems enjoying the rebuilding process after this run is over.

Yeah, I’m definitely in the minority with my opinion, at least for the posters that will admit it. I suppose that I like the idea of being able to follow football up until the end of the season with a playoff berth on the line, versus the all or nothing option of winning everything and then sucking for the next 5 seasons.

this isn't the game we were arguing about five years ago...and it dyam sure bears little resemblance to 2009 and earlier. Goondell has finally gotten what the owners want, a carousel of new contenders every season with an attendant explosion of "STARS!!!!!" on every team. Not too far away from the WWE as it stands. Look at the ridiculous decisions made almost every time there's a challenge of any significance. Complete turtles inside NFL offices making the calls....just what the Goon has always wanted.
I spent NOTHING this season on anything NFL related except my TV subscription. Of course I will sit on my couch, content in my hypocrisy, and continue to watch the game I love and have loved for decades but I refuse to buy into any of this fabricated hype and the constant Roomful Of Casserlys moron candy they try to shove down our throats every week.

If the Pats were to resign Brady at probably $30 million for another year, how would BB or anyone build the rest of the team with cap space of what looks like about $20 million..

How could any of this work, as he has already proclaimed he will not take a "home town discount"??... unless there are not a lot of offers out there in the price range he seeks and settles for about $20 million.

Then there are the shenanigans of Goodell and what he has in mind to "punish" the Patriots....

I would say that the hope would be to sign Brady for about 25m, which would leave about 25m left to spend. An additional 6.5m could be freed up by cutting Sanu. That would total approx. 31m, which seems reasonable enough considering that it would compare with one of the “average” years.

Also, there are 12 draft picks, and former picks with guys like Harry, Williams, Harris, Cajuste, Froholdt, Winovich, etc returning from last year who are expected to take on bigger roles.

All hope is not lost, but they’ll have to get Brady to accept 25m and also have some nice scores in both the draft + free agency.

I won't mind watching a rebuilding team gutting out wins and sometimes playing the spoiler. Unlike any other fan we will always be able to talk about the two decades of dominance. I also won't miss the entitled pink hats disappearing or venturing off with their newly acquired JG jerseys.

The next time Belichick wins a SB without Tom Brady as his QB will be the first time. He hasn't done it yet and the odds are that he won't.

By turning the majority of the contract into signing bonus over 3 years.

Brady would get his money. The Pats would have dead money from the Brady deal in 2021

Nobody knows for a fact.

Nobody knows if Brady can win without BB either.

Given the schedule next year, and the uphill climb to build a roster more competitive than this year's, it will be one of the greatest seasons ever if they win the 2020 SB. So that would be pretty cool.

And similar to @Tunescribe, the NFL has lost its spell on me. I don't want to invest my energy, passion, and money into a business that's based on fleecing local taxpayers so billionaires can build even more value into their franchises. It is a massive scam that relies on a compliant fanbase and I don't want to play anymore.

So given Andy's two difficult options, I'm for win next year, celebrate the miracle, let it all fall apart and I can happily focus my life elsewhere. It'll take some effort not to get pulled in again but I think I'm up for it.

I agree, but I really posted that in response to the posters here who think that the Pats could dump Brady and nothing would change because of Belichick.

Right now with Brady counting 36.7 mill the patriots gave just over 21 mill. If they give him 30 mill spreading half of it over 3 years that saves them 10 million. ( this is only 12 mill less than letting him walk)
Cutting sanu saves 6
Extending Hightower could save 5 more
Jmac saves 3.5
That’s 46 mill in cap room right there. I don’t ever remember the patriots having that much cap space.
I think that 12 draft picks and 46 mill is sufficient to add some talent.

FYI Brady hasn’t said he won’t take a “hometown discount”. A reporter “heard” that.

But if BB won another Super Bowl with Stidman nothing really changed.

Don't hold your breath (well, I don't want you to) while waiting for that to happen.

Patriots aren't far from a SB team.
Keep OL intact and you got the 2 rooks who were hurt and possibly Andrews back.
Resign Thuney. If you gotta jettison some salary let Cannon go.Sign Brady, duh.
Add one good wr. Upgrade te, which won't be hard to do.
Harry will be greatly improved next year.
If that team wins the SB and Brady retires, the 2021 team won't suck. Best secondary in the nfl, which is now the most important defensive unit. And the cbs are young and great. Gilmore,JJ, JC.
Williams has huge potential and could factor in at safety, where we are a little older.
Enough young talent they'll be a likely playoff team in 2021.

I feel empty

Even if Tom leaves, I'm confident we will have a competitive squad next year. For the first time in a long time Bill has a head start to prepare for next season.
