Demaryius Thomas traded to the Jets

Seriously? He's in a come back year, trying to justify one last decent contract. To do that, he needs to get on the field, put up some numbers, and be valuable to a team. The Pats have at least four receivers solidly ahead of him on the depth chart, plus two rookies they'll want to give playing time to.

What could be better than going to a team on a one year contract where you are reunited with a coach who knows how to use you and has seen the best of you, on a team where you have a chance to play into a starting role? Why is that worse than what he faced from the Pats' bench and inactive list, week after week?

I see this as Belichick once again being a players' coach. Thomas came on good faith, then circumstances put a limit on his opportunity. The Pats responded by putting him in the best position possible to be successful, even though it is strengthening a rival.

Only one week ago he was probably told that he was needed on the team and then he semi-kinda did the team a favor by re-signing after being cut.

Plus he's going from a Title contender to a team that if makes the play offs, it would be good season. Maybe DT really wanted a ring and this would be his last, best chance of getting it

Id agree with you, since Ive learned a few posts ago, that going back to coach who gets him is a major plus. Maybe this did go through DT and wasn't just a Staff decision.

I wish him well there.

Why. The. Hell . Are. We. Making. Trades. With. Them
You trade for the highest return ...
Well unless you're the Steelers .....

How many receivers that are used to seeing the most targets do people think we can play? I worry about Brown when he realizes that Jules is still going to see the most balls.

#52 - Bodine
#53 - a veteran swing OT
===
So, basically, you would go with 7 OL's with no option to have an 8th active OT. There would be no inactive backups, just Practice Squad players.

Wynn, Eleumanor, Karras, Mason, Thuney
Game Day backups: Cunningham and Bodine
inactive: Cannon

Why would you have Obi on the active squad over say Skipper or Croston? Obi plays almost no ST's (25 reps for all of 2018). I say Skipper because, I would like to see a veteran OT added. Cunningham seems an OK #4 OT. I would prefer a veteran as the swing OT for the season.

Well I'm guessing Thuney and Cunningham are OT options as well as Elumeanor, with Skipper as option #4. Bodine being back will add to the OG depth as well as a back up for C. Now you can release Ferentz and create a rosters spot for Obi, or just leave it open for now.'

Can you think of an immediate need for that 53rd slot if they release Ferrentz

All I know is that after Obi passed waivers there is no reason at all to elevate him to the active roster unless someone goes down. It doesn't look like anyone will try to sign him off the PS any time soon and even if they do the Pats can always try to sweeten his deal to keep him there (or sign him to the active roster if they feel that strongly).

Favor ? He got a 300k salary bump for agreeing to stay off the roster for 2-3 days after openly saying there was no interest in him at all this offseason except from the Pats.

There was no favor at all.

Offseason is one thing, after the pre-season after showing SOME wheels is another

but okay, call it a deal of compadres between Patriots and Thomas.

Just want to point this out again, as much as myself as to others. It'll make me feel better and, hopefully, it'll do the same for some of you. Think passing downs:

Edelman
Brown
Gordon
Dorset
t
Meyers/Harry/Meredith

White
Burkhead

Michel
Harris

Watson
Izzo

Develin

So, fingers crossed for health, and for problem avoidance, and hopes for some kind of TE upgrade, but it's looking pretty damn good outside of that.

I'll fix that for you:

Hahaha that's funny. I'm pretty sure TFB doesn't give a crap about stuff like this. DT seemed to have good chemistry with JE and TB. It is it what it is. Moving on to Miami.

In my opinion, DT was only going to contribute an enormous amount under the nuclear scenario of AB not buying in AND Gordon falling off the wagon.

We could certainly debate about how likely it is that BOTH will happen, but maybe BB thinks the odds of a double implosion are low.

I don't disagree but competent swing tackles aren't a dime a dozen.

BTW- I think I'd rather try Elumeanor at the RT spot and make one line up change, than have Thuney out there and make 2. While the story was that the Ravens originally wanted Eluemeanor to play G this season, IIRC he has more starts at OT than G. I'm wondering if putting Thuney at RT in the game was more of an emergency move given JE's short time with the team, and with an entire week to get ready, he'd be ready to play.

I'm just guessing here, but I'm loathe to make 2 moves than do one. Maybe Cunningham is the answer. I don't know. I'm just glad its Miami next week instead of the Ravens.

If it's Meyers vs Thomas, i'd rather have Meyers.

This could be a combination of things. I agree that DT may have seen the WR depth chart and realized that he was going to be the fourth WR, at best, and asked for a trade or release.

It is also likely that BB and the coaches had seen more explosiveness from Meyers throughout training camp than they had from Thomas in the last 2+ weeks of practice. Explosiveness/burst can be determined through observation but also can be quantified by the training staff and medical team with proper equipment, which is obviously available at the NFL level (remember the Russians testing Drago in rocky 4, that type of stuff).

Combine that with Myers youth, low cost and potential to grow with additional reps and Meyers became the clear choice.

The only roster move that made sense. See what happens when Harry comes back

I agree. He'd be a luxury right now. About the only role I can see him improving is PERHAPS KO coverage.

I'm happy having him around and practicing with the team in case we get some injuries at S

It certainly has been an interesting 2 weeks, full of surprises.

I don't think BB would mess with core ST over saving somewhere between 1-2M. Remember you'd have to still put someone onto the active roster at the minimum (1.2m ?).

Unless you mean for Harry who is already accounted for ? But even then not sure this is worth it.

Someone has probably pointed this out as I’ve not read ahead, but cutting Ebner as some have speculated would not result in any cap savings. Ebner is a vested vet, so, at this point, the Patriots still would be on the hook for his salary if they cut him. Trading him or extending him would be the only ways to reduce his cap figure.
