JOSH GORDON REINSTATED

How could the nfl let him back in this year? They need to keep him in rehab for the rest of this year.
“Rehab” often describes a long period of inpatient care, followed by some type of sober living arrangement/partial care. Then, of course, meetings, counseling, and clean urine tests.

If he went to inpatient care in December, it’s safe to say that he’s been in some type of “rehab” for quite sometime, now. I mean, we’re in the 8th month since he went to treatment, so he has been under some type of long term plan.

At some point, he’s got to deal with things outside of the bubble and still be able to live a meaningful life. From the NFL’s perspective, that will be measured by his ability to pass random screens on a consistent basis, attend his therapy sessions, and take advice from his team of caregivers.

You are conspiring apples to space shuttles.
That's one conspiracy theory I've never heard of. I guess I always assumed they only had apple sauce available in foil food pouches, consumed through a straw.

June 19th:
I remember you stating that he would be ready at the start of camp because Tom Brady was playing catch with him. The question I have now revolves around the fact that he has been a participant in a structured environment for many years and that has not been enough. I am not condemning Josh however his troubles started in middle school and they are complicated. :( We shall see. Nothing is certain even if he is trending in the right direction. Only time will tell.

A timeline of Josh Gordon's history with substance abuse and suspensions | Boston.com
My understanding, though I could be wrong is that Josh's suspension last season was a slip involving alcohol, not MJ. And if you know anything at all about alcoholism the term day by day is NOT a cliche. So, yes, there will be no guarantees when Josh comes back. You can only hope for the best.

For those that have written Gordon off - it can be done. People do change. I just passed 1 year alcohol and drug free after 30 years as a raging (mostly functioning) alcoholic and frequent hard recreational drug user. I didn’t do AA or have anything court ordered I just decided I didn’t like what the lifestyle was doing to me physically, mentally and emotionally and decided to stop. Here’s hoping Josh has a similar awakening.

Great to hear for you and respect for putting it together but with all due respect this is just your personal anecdote.

If willpower was enough to get out from under addiction we'd have barely any addicts left. Everyone of them at some points hits "rock bottom" in some shape or form and says "this is it". And yet here we are.

Don't make the mistake just because something might have worked for you -- and who knows you might slip up next week already after watching this Pats offense in preseason -- it must also be true for others. There is no such thing like an awakening but much rather it is a lifelong struggle where years of discipline and sobriety can be undone with one bad decision in a weak moment.

This is called winning the game of life, an amazingly hard thing to do. You should be proud of your accomplishment. :)

Everyone is comparing Gordon to Hill. The comparison that works is comparing Gordon to Martavis Bryant as both have had numerous suspensions for non-PED drugs. Bryant, who’s a free agent, filed for reinstatement a couple of months ago.

If Goodell reinstates Bryant, there’s no argument for not reinstating Gordon as well. You’d think Goodell would rule on Bryant before the season starts, so he could possibly be signed by a team to give him a look see before the cutdown to 53. It makes sense for Gordon to be reinstated at the same time. It would be, if nothing else, a goodwill gesture to the NFLPA because the next CBA will not include sanctions for marijuana use.

The more I think about this the more certain I am that the Patriots orchestrated the timing of this to spare Gordon from having to interact with the press and public during the open access part of training camp.
Where do you get that the next cba will allow the use of weed?

What has goodell ever done that would make you think he would make a gesture of goodwill?

I think you overestimate how many people have willpower.
We have a nation full of people who smoke, are overweight, and/or struggle to have the discipline to apply themselves to a career and succeed.

Same boat. Last SB I watched that didn't have the Pats in there was GB beating the Steelers. And that's because I ended up being in Madison during that weekend.

There is no way I will watch the GB/Chicago season opener. Many more interesting things to do.

So you missed one SB in the last five years. Whoopity doo..:D

OT, but there's lots of research showing that willpower is not a major factor in people being overweight. (E.g. the "marshmallow test" of self-control is ten times as predictive of SAT scores as of weight.) Meanwhile, holding the belief that fat people simply lack willpower is hugely predictive of weight-based discrimination.

Sorry, back to the sort-of football talk!

I'm not sure how nicotine or cigarettes compares to other drugs but stating that it's a "lifelong" struggle seems a bit misleading. Yes it is a struggle to quit an addiction and may take numerous efforts but the first year is most definitely the toughest. The subsequent years become easier and easier to the point that cigarettes become an afterthought. No real mental battles like the first year iow. But I do agree that any slip up or moment of weakness can put you at square one or reawaken the struggle.

A little OT but I'm not sure that weight problems are necessarily a "willpower" issue. I suspect our nation's obesity problem has more to do with bad food and bad information about what constitutes a proper diet.

true.

He made the first step of applying for reinstatement. Will it take a few days? Weeks? Months?
We do not know. Hopefully he is healthy enough and persistent enough to make the team,

Yes one bad decision.
I have 2 serious alcoholics in extended family who are now decades into sobriety. They had to bottom out badly but they're still recovering.
It can be done.

I have a family member that struggles with addiction (to who knows what) as well as depression.
He cannot hold a steady job. :(

It has been widely reported that the NFLPA wants to remove sanctions against marijuana use in the next CBA which is currently being negotiated.

My guess is there will be a CBA extension before the 2019 season begins. The owners need an extension before negotiating a new round of TV deals. Truth is the NFL can’t count on larger fees from the networks without providing more product. That’s why the 18 game schedule combined with a 2nd bye week is an essential part of any plan to get more money from the networks.

Allowing marijuana usage (pain management) is part of the package the owners will offer the players to get them to agree to expand the season along with larger rosters and/or more flexible roster rules. Of course, the biggest incentive for the players to get a new deal done is that the salary cap keeps expanding rather than contracting which could very well be the situation if TV networks don’t offer larger right fees which is very possible if more product is not part of the deal.

This isn’t about Roger Goodell finally finding a conscience. Reinstating Gordon, Bryant, Gregory and Irving will just be a part of the politics of the new CBA agreement.

Point blank period.

Yet any person who truly wants to can find information on nutrition, eat the right foods and lose weight.

I once read, don’t remember where, that the relapse rate with cigarette addiction is higher than the relapse rate with heroin

Yet any person who truly wants to can find information on nutrition, eat the right foods and lose weight.

The problem is there's too much misinformation. Take calories for example. There are more calories in a handful of almonds than in a can of Coke. However, if you munch on almonds all day, you'll feel fine and lose weight; if you drink Coke all day, you'll feel miserable and gain weight. Why is that?

Look at the nutrition labels. Notice the sugar to fiber ratio in almonds vs. the sugar to fiber ratio in Coke (no fiber at all). This has been the problem in the American diet for years and why we're having an epidemic of type 2 diabetes.
