As we all know, the NFL trade deadline is approaching (Oct 31, 4pm). Though not much excitement takes place, I’m always intrigued by potential player movement & what it could mean for the teams involved. Though NE doesn’t currently have their “usual” amount of cap space, we could certainly use an upgrade/ depth at a couple of spots (I.E..LB, T, RB, DL etc...)
That being said, while most of these types of ideas are usually pretty ridiculous, this particular article below presents maybe thee worst trade scenario (for NE) I’ve seen in quite some time! It’s almost comical.

Wait for it....

I would take late in the year 2013-2016 thru Game 4 Jamie Collins and a low salary.

I want no part of the freelancing loafing Collins.

While I do think KVN and High are playing pretty well now, there is no question this team needs more speed and quality play at LB.

The Collins trade proposal is intriguing. How many bridges did he burn on his way out a few years back? Is he fully healthy now? Will he buy in and be ok with being more of a role player?

I have a feeling this thread is going to be multiple pages.

My take.

It was rumored NE offered Jamie a multi-year deal during the 2016 TC and he turned it down. So that means they really liked him but not THAT much..

I firmly believe Jamie wanted to get paid, was pissed off NE didn't pay him and started to do things on the field and in the locker room the team didn't appreciate. See Randy Moss. They weren't awful things but enough to raise concerns and they got what they could for him.

What I don't know is now that Jamie has all the financial security in the world, would he revert back to 2014 Jamie Collins?

I think he needs to lose weight. He seems bigger now than when he was here. Plus he MUST be good in pass coverage (which has not been his strength)

I dunna know. I'd pass. Just too many questions.

Maybe Flores can get the most out of him?

Collins for a 7th rounder? Bill should absolutely do this...

I could see a relatively low-level trade for (possibly) short term LB/ST depth - someone like John Simon or the 2017 version of Marquis Flowers. LB seems (like last season) the thinnest position in terms of the raw numbers of healthy-and-competent bodies.

Maybe either short term depth or long term depth/developmental potential at RB, perhaps depending on Burkhead's chances of making it back from IR this season.

At OT, I don't know of anyone who might be available for a 2018 reserve role who's significantly better than Croston. Maybe there is; I just don't know of anyone in particular whose current team might consider them "surplus". Meanwhile, Tobin is a free agent again.

For the DL, the Pats seem to have plenty of bodies at both DT and DE. I'm not aware of any specific DL who'd be "surplus" on their current team, and an immediate upgrade to the Pats roster, and reasonably affordable.

I think the hottest take in that article is that Deone Bucannon has negative trade value due to his excessive salary. That’s not going to be a popular opinion.

There's no cap space for Collins and he isn't the answer anyway.

Niners are going nowhere with JG out. I'd give up a pick for Reuben Foster regardless of his troubles.

Cleveland's not trading Collins to Anybody for a mere 7th-rounder.

I saw the Brownies game on local TV here vs the Murderer-Worshippers...their defense is playing well, including Collins at 4-3 SLB (and Genard Avery at WLB, but that's a different topic isn't it?).

Unless they completely sh!t the bed during the next 3 games or receive an offer they simply cannot refuse, then Cleveland will not be conducting any fire sales at the deadline.

No cap space for Collins. Plus I've seen video of him this year where he looks like he's lethargic and playing touch football. What a waste of talent.

Collins is certainly heavier than he was when he was drafted here, and is conducting business closer to the LOS than ever before, but I wouldn't describe his play - at least vs Bal'more - as lethargic. Their defense is real, and Collins is doing his fair shsre within it.

I agree. I think there are enough teams that have the space and would definitely jump at a chance to have his rights to negotiate an extension.

I think in addition to that you just have to question his commitment to football (i.e. mental toughness). I mean it is his right to just see it as a job and there is nothing wrong with it. But Foxboro is just the wrong place for that.

He pretty much ended up doing in Cleveland what Belichick thought he would do in NE. Lazy player who stopped caring and let his natural talent get to his head. Then the Browns gave him that big check and he was DONE.

No thank you, Cleveland. Keep him. We'd be better off bringing Marquis Flowers back.

The article is wrong. Collins is playing over 75% of the snaps. He is not being phased out.

His cap hit would be over $7m if he was traded. You probably need to cut and/or restructure 2-3 players. Who?

The article proposes Cleveland restructure his contract before the trade (convert a large chunk of salary to signing bonus - and the signing bonus charge would stick with Cleveland).

As others have noted above, for many reasons this is a ridiculous trade proposal for both sides at the moment.

So Cleveland will pay him to play for the patriots? That’s stupid.
