Raiders Reporter lists Khalil Mack as potential trade candidate

So a "swiss cheese D" simply needs a painfully expensive Khalil Mack and suddenly everything will be fine?
Hmmm because that doesn’t seem to be working out for the raiders.

I am hopeful of Rivers too but no one knows what he can do against NFL caliber OTs. The jump from the level of competition he saw in college and the fact that he missed a year of football put a blur into any prediction
There's a way to scout small school players like him. It's his traits that matter, not the player he's going up against. He passed the "small school test" a long time ago. He had great production, several + traits, dominated comp & has a lot of upside.

The year off doesn't help & certainly isn't ideal.

I was speaking in terms of health across the board for the DL & think we have a vg group if healthy.

And if he is healthy the entire year I expect an impact player.

That still leaves major question marks about how he will play against better competition. I’m not sure what small school test you are referring to; of course he thrived against that competition but the test comes when he faces NFL players, unless the goal is being a good small school player

I think we have the potential to be good on the dl and I’m hopeful Rivers can contribute but he is very far from a lock to.

There is a certain way you scout small school players for obvious reasons. Quite common when evaluating guys like that.

Once again it doesn’t tell you how they will perform against better competition.

“No he costs too much!” Patriots fans will scream while our front office continues to scrape from the bottom of the barrel to find bargains and we have to watch another season of garbage QBs put on record setting displays against this D
I understand the frustration, but the general approach and dedication to salary cap/roster management has served us well, especially when you combine it with having Tom Brady, of course.

While it would be pretty exciting to see a player of Mack’s caliber added to the defense, he’s reportedly looking for a 75–100+ million dollar deal. It’s hard to imagine Belichick throwing that kind of money around, not to mention how it would affect the depth of players 11-53.

I would rather find a way to re-sign Flowers and keep building the talent on the line around him.
I would likely agree with you, although I’d wait to see one more year of Flowers’ development, particularly since he’ll be shifting to the left side due to Clayborne’s condition. I realize that approach could backfire a bit should he have a 15 sack season or something, but you’ve got to be careful when throwing around those kinds of numbers on a deal, and Belichick is always cautious with those second contracts.

I agree with you. I think it’s safe to assume that Belichick is quite familiar with the differences in scouting when it comes to trying to find talent at smaller programs. I’m sure there is some type of curve that is applied when assessing his strengths versus the level of competition.

Ultimately, Rivers is still a 3rd round pick, and we take shots in the 3rd/4th rounds all of the time. The expectations are higher for him since he was the first player chosen by the team in last year’s draft, but he’s really nothing more than the usual 3rd round flier when you think about it.

How many times has Brady’s greatness masked the Swiss cheese D over the past several years?

Apart from 2011 and the start of 2012 I dont really remember a Swiss cheese D we had since BB took over. Individual bad games, sure.. everyone has them. But consistently bad defenses.. nope.

Disagree, last years D was not good. It allowed “washed up” quarterbacks to put up career record setting days practically reviving their broken careers like Smith, Newton, Foles, and Bortles.

I think the defense was on the right path after 2014 then we traded away some star young talent for peanuts and missed on several high draft picks on D.

My hope this year is I don’t have to watch the opposing QB have a picnic back there in the pocket like last year. Seemed like opposing QBs last year were barely touched.

So we have gone from swiss cheese D to "was not good". Moving the goalposts already in the first sentence.

Also putting Bortles into that list after the D and ST saved a failing offense from losing the AFCCG is also pretty bold. Similarly, maybe the Vikings swiss cheese defense also needs to be reworked after getting wrecked even worse by Foles in the NFCCG.

Good that we didn't have to play any good QBs like Brees, Ryan or Roethlisberger that season. Otherwise they would have totally blown us apart. Right ?

We didnt trade away anyone for peanuts. But arguing with you people about this is like talking to flat earthers. Who was traded away for Peanuts ? Chandler Jones ? The pass rusher with the highest return in a trade in the last 4-5 years ?

And not only did we get a second round pick for CJ but by getting rid of his salary and by not extending him we were in position to sign players like Gilmore AND another midlevel (3m) contract.

Collins ? You think getting that third round pick is not enough for half a season of Collins after he was demoted to a part time player ?

You should check up the NFL 2017 stats because you'd see that what you are claiming here is not only not true but that you must have been watching a different team. We were one sack away from being in the top 5 of Sacks per team. So clearly the opposing QBs were more than barely touched.

And before you start moving the goalposts on the QB pressure let me just make sure to say that I am by no means saying the pass rush was great or impressive last year. But merely that all of your claims are extremely over-exaggerated or maybe just uninformed crap.

I listen to Chatham’s podcast all the time. I know you do too. The problem is you never think Belichick makes any mistakes. It seems like B.B. walks on water in your eyes. I personally believe Brady is the main reason for the patriots success, not B.B. I used to not think this way but I do know. Not that I don’t think B.B. is a great coach. He is. But Brady’s great play has covered up for a lot of his mistakes.

How does this have anything to do with what you wrote in your previous two posts ?

Just FYI so we know the magnitude of extension Mack is looking for.

The yearly salary is not what they are looking for, you figure any contract has to at the very least exceed the amount of guaranteed money he would make over the next three years. 13 million this year, and say a 18 million franchise tag in 2019, and a 20 million franchise tag in 2020. At that time, Mack will be 30 years old. Not the age you want to be out long for another high paying long term contract.

If someone was to dangle a 5 year 90 million contract with say half of it guaranteed, I think he would take it.

When was the last time high-priced pass rusher worked out for the team? Our biggest problem is the lack of LB whom can do pass coverage. This is going to be a recurring theme all year. Embrace the hurt.

A guy like mack would improve our defense tremendously. After Hightower everyone’s a question mark including van noy.
