Josh Sweat Trade Candidate

The signing bonus has to be paid out by the Cardinals, and the option bonus might have to be as well. Assuming that's the case, this contract is actually laid out like this for the acquiring team:

2026 - $9.8M salary (guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit ~$10M
2027 - $17M salary (non-guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit $17M
2028 - $17M salary (non-guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit $17M

So in reality it's more like a one-year deal for about $10M guaranteed, with two option years added on at $17M per year. If he is a good soldier, you can keep him for modest money, renegotiate those dollars etc. If he is not worth hanging onto, you can cut bait after one year for no cost and you only paid about $10M for a one year rental.

How 20 you get 24 miil x2?. I get it as 11mill next year and 19 the following year,
I oversimplified and just looked at the rightmost column from Spotrac, to get cap hit. I think you and Ross are correct to back out the prorated signing and option bonus amounts. I think it really would cost the Pats salary+roster bonuses+workout bonuses. I also misread the void year, so he’d be here for three years on this deal, and he would be playing the last year of it at age 32. So…

2026: $9.8M + $1M + $100K = $10.9M
2027: $17M + $1M + $100K = $18.1M
2028: $17M + $1M + $100K = $18.1M

I’m looking at that more favorably now. Thanks for pointing it out!

Not a bad deal IMO for a one year rental with two option years at a position of need, but depends on trade capital price. That said, he knows Milton Williams well so that helps.

Why would be happy with us?

Why wouldn't he walk out whenever he isn't getting his way?

Seems like a double standard: AJ Brown is unhappy in Philly, people are fine with trading for him. Josh Sweat is unhappy in Arizona, why would he be happy in NE?

Lots of reasons:

1. He'd be playing for a contender
2. He'd be re-joining Milt Williams, with whom he helped win a SB not long ago.
3. He'd be playing for one of the best and most player-friendly HCs in the NFL.

It seems that Sweat's main issue is that he signed with Arizona because of Jonathan Gannon, who the Cardinals then fired.
