Josh Sweat Trade Candidate

The signing bonus has to be paid out by the Cardinals, and the option bonus might have to be as well. Assuming that's the case, this contract is actually laid out like this for the acquiring team:

2026 - $9.8M salary (guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit ~$10M
2027 - $17M salary (non-guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit $17M
2028 - $17M salary (non-guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit $17M

So in reality it's more like a one-year deal for about $10M guaranteed, with two option years added on at $17M per year. If he is a good soldier, you can keep him for modest money, renegotiate those dollars etc. If he is not worth hanging onto, you can cut bait after one year for no cost and you only paid about $10M for a one year rental.

How 20 you get 24 miil x2?. I get it as 11mill next year and 19 the following year,
I oversimplified and just looked at the rightmost column from Spotrac, to get cap hit. I think you and Ross are correct to back out the prorated signing and option bonus amounts. I think it really would cost the Pats salary+roster bonuses+workout bonuses. I also misread the void year, so he’d be here for three years on this deal, and he would be playing the last year of it at age 32. So…

2026: $9.8M + $1M + $100K = $10.9M
2027: $17M + $1M + $100K = $18.1M
2028: $17M + $1M + $100K = $18.1M

I’m looking at that more favorably now. Thanks for pointing it out!

Not a bad deal IMO for a one year rental with two option years at a position of need, but depends on trade capital price. That said, he knows Milton Williams well so that helps.

Why would be happy with us?

Why wouldn't he walk out whenever he isn't getting his way?

Seems like a double standard: AJ Brown is unhappy in Philly, people are fine with trading for him. Josh Sweat is unhappy in Arizona, why would he be happy in NE?

Lots of reasons:

1. He'd be playing for a contender
2. He'd be re-joining Milt Williams, with whom he helped win a SB not long ago.
3. He'd be playing for one of the best and most player-friendly HCs in the NFL.

It seems that Sweat's main issue is that he signed with Arizona because of Jonathan Gannon, who the Cardinals then fired.

I want no part of either one

Or there may be an alternative available on FA market…

Isn't Joey Bosa getting close to cooked territory?? Stick a fork in him.

Betting odds are not sources and they aren't indicative of anything. Sites like this set the odds of Bosa to NE high to encourage people to bet on it specifically because they have no reason to think it's happening. People see this and bet on it because the odds spike creates an illusion. If there was actually indication that Bosa was signing with NE they wouldn't want to encourage people to bet on it. They set better odds for the things they want people to bet.

The Pats are trading for Brown. I seriously doubt they will make another big name trade.

Which? Trading for Brown? Or make another big name trade?

I think if I had to pick one I’d prefer they make another big name trade instead of trading for Brown.
I've been pretty clear about NOT wanting Brown.
Dudes a ****, and expensive.
Fk that dude.
IF HE COMES HERE, I WILL cheer for him because he'll be on our team, but I just don't like him from all I've seen over the years.
Great Player...ASSHAT IMO.

I'll cheer for him, even though I don't want him.

Actually he is not expensive. Brown's cap hit is $7M this year and $11M next year. After that I assume he would be released. Kraft has to pay more (he can afford it), but because the cap hits are low, his pay does not effect the plans with other players. I don't want to lose that high a draft pick for 2 years of the guy, that is why I vote No.

I think Brown might be expensive for the incremental value he would provide. Expensive in both salary and trade compensation. I’d rather see us invest the draft capital in players that will strengthen the team for the entire duration of their rookie contracts, not just a year or two. That’s not as big a deal with Josh Sweat because he could be here for three years on his present contract.

Thing is, I expect having Brown will change the way our offense approaches the game. That’s why I say “incremental value”, because we will lose some productivity we would otherwise have if he weren’t here. In particular I think having him would stunt the development of the short passing game as a complement to Drake’s existing deep ball skills. So when I weigh out what I expect we would lose as well as gain I just don’t see Brown as being worth it. A lot of people seem to think he’ll be like getting a cheat code to put up video pinball game numbers, and I just don’t see that happening.

Although I loved Moss grabbing everything in site, I Hated Tommy Just chucking it up to him, it wasn't the kinda **** I wanted.
I'm just a chump, I don't know jack ****, but I saw it, and didn't like that risk.... Randy was a different Animal, but I didn't care for it anyway.
I'd prefer we didn't go to the "One Stud" WR Playbook, it's too EZ to shut down with great defense.
Gimme 4-5 really talented guys that know how to get open, cuz you can't cover them all.
I know

One injury away from a “No WR Talent” offense.

Looking back, in the early days it was always a big thing about Brady spreading the ball around, having his favorite receiver being whoever was open. Then Moss arrived, Tommy discovered the dopamine hit a true cheat code WR could be, and his approach to the game changed. Before Moss the passing game was predicated on the defense not successfully covering every WR on every play.

Thats my basic problem with the wild enthusiasm for Brown, it’s moving the offense away from being multidimensional.

Give me a dink and dunk, 4 yd average on running plays, and occasional shots down the seam, and a 3rd down back. That's my offense.
