More greed from the NFL....

What you are saying makes sense except...

Pats were 0-2 in first 2 Super Bowls
Pats were 3-0 in next 3 Super Bowls
Pats were 2-2 in the last 4

Fixed.

There is a difference between seeking a fair profit and seeking to eek out every last penny. That used to be understood by most people. Today, we justify all manner of bad behaviors under the heading of "just business" because of that drive to make every possible penny, and we are morally and spiritually worse off for it.

The ESPN money is fast disappearing, so the threadbare NFL has to do all it can to keep the lights on. I guess Goodell and his cronies figured the best place to start is with 50-year-old rappers who still have time to make a the big bucks from those Time-Life boxed sets of oldies you can get as a premium for giving $50 to PBS.

I don't see how this issue applies to bad behavior that makes us morally or spiritually worse.
Overcharging people displaced from them homes due to a natural disaster food food shelter or clothing would fit the evil side you bring up. Negotiating a contract with a performer at an event seems not even in the vicinity.

Yep. It just happens to bands. Look at the Rolling Stones. Every album after Exile on Main St was just ok or crappy

Same with U2. Everything after Achtung Baby is ok to meh. Then they had that dance music phase. Christ. All That You Cant Leave Behind was a good comeback and Atomic Bomb was decent but it isn't in the same ballpark as the earlier stuff. Everything since has been meh.

With that said I've purchased every lick of music they've churned out and have seen them in concert dozens of times since AB.

The Joshua Tree concert at Gillette was awesome.

Ok.....so you don’t like some of their newer music....Same here....the free one was garbage

That said, just as their most recent concert displayed, and the half dozen or so since the 90s that I have been to, they at definitely not in their downswing

They have nothing to do with the stones

Don't you think Jay-Z should get paid for his performance? It's absurd to make top performers pay the $12 billion per year NFL for the honor of rapping for The Man. This is one for Signs of the Apocalypse in SI.

What you are saying makes sense except...

Pats were 3-0 in 1st 3 Super Bowls
Pats were 2-2 in the last 4

So your supposed competitive advantage doesn't seem to be showing up.

Stuhtistics were never my strong point...
...but, they are 2--0 in the last two, so, as with soooo many things, it depends on how you look at it, I guess.
...5--2 under BB as well...

I'll stick with my original view, respecting that others can look at the same data from a different perspective.

Correct. The quality of their studio work is on the downswing. Concerts are fine.

I believe bands who have members in their 40s and 50s do not have the same level of creativity as they did in their 20s and 30s.

Pearl Jam, Metallica and The Red Hot Chili Peppers are other examples. So-so studio...great concerts.

Here's the perfect option for the Super Bowl Halftime show:

I'm pretty sure she won't argue about the gate receipts.

Great.

First of all, three minutes and 29 seconds. That amount of time represents:
a) The sum total of all the time I have spent watching SB Halftime shows
b) About as long as a half time show should last.

So, sign her up!

She won't complain about how much she gets paid...and it will give the kids something to watch while I get the dinner out...and it's a lot better than watching Jay Z...

Bring back Carol Channing!

Glad to see the old patrol is about.

Can't tell if you are being sarcastic.

I do not care a lick what jay z is or isn't paid.

If the market dictates he be paid 10 mill then the owners need to pay 10 mill or find someone else.

If the market dictates playing the halftime show is a career boosting event that makes it worthwhile to pay for the opportunity then jay z needs to decide if it's worth it to him.

This is simple economics. People are trying to make it a morality or social issue when it isn't.

I think that real football fans don't care much who does the halftime show. It's for the people at the parties who don't even know what teams are playing. I for one would be fine with a marching band!
Personally, I have never watched the Super Bowl half time show. I'm quite proud of that. I'm here to watch football, not "performing artists".

This guy. It's apparently the basis of every goddam song since anyway.

And btw, he's totally right. Somebody actually did it (edit - I was wrong, doesn't start w/Yesterday's Papers per the Stones, that lyric just shows up in another song)

Do not really give a rats ass about who performs at the SB, IMO it is part of an event that gets more attention than it deserves.. from my couch get glimpses of it, but not many have been memorable.. the last one that comes to mind are the Who in 2010, that made me realize as much as I love the band, there should be age limits on rock performers.. old rockers need to fade away.

I am fortunate, I guess, as I do not know any song that Jay Z. has ever recorded and probably never will..

The economics of being a songwriter or musician are absolutely brutal. Of course Jay Z should be paid for his performance and intellectual property. There are no $40 million Goodell salaries in the music business.

How Technology Has Changed the Economics of Music

Nice rant

It's too bad that the NFL "seeking to eek out every last penny" from grossly over paid "stars" who charge $300 per ticket isn't applicable in any way.

Both sides are big boys wearing big boy underwear.

Once you realize they aren't dealing with an African orphanage......you can move back to reality.
