Here Lombardi “fixes“ Patriots in 5 steps.

Includes keeping Jimmy (Italian connection) signing Butler long-term and ..
sining the best player available regardless of need!

Now who could that be?
Hightower, Campbell..?

Lmao if Lombardi thinks the Patriots need "fixing." I do like some of his ideas though.

Early FA binky's

1. CCampbell - a perfect Chris Long replacement, despite being an entirely different type player. Lots of positional flexibility between DE and DT

2. Jack Doyle - IF Bennett leaves, he's the guy I'd pay $5-7MM for to replace him. Here is a link to a Indy Star article about him, and see for yourself why he'd make a great Patriot

Insider: Is Jack Doyle worth $7 million a year?

3. Jabaal Sheard - I think his play, while choppy last season, was good enough to deserve another shot. It wasn't his best year, but that is what makes it possible to resign him. OTOH, he might feel like Long did, that the Pats system doesn't just let him simply go after the passer.

I like how he starts the Jets one. In the Pats... "We're going to fix the Patriots in 5 steps". In the Jets', "How to fix the Jets in 6 huge, huge steps."

I just had to look up Jack Doyle. He seems like a good No. 2 tight end, but I think we may be able to find someone similar, and less expensive, in the draft.

Chargers cleaning house.

Stevie Johnson is a guy I wouldn't mind seeing brought in, though his best years may be behind him. Jack Doyle is just a guy, doesn't do anything for me.

TE's usually don't make rookie splashes, ESPECIALLY anyone the Pats would get where they will be picking. Doyle has worked 4 years to get to where he is. Now he's ready to play the game. He'd be a perfect #2/Gronk protection guy. Just sayin'

Yea I have 0 interest in Doyle.

20 mill cleared before noon...makin moves

You know.. even if things will look dire during the first few hours of FA just think about who is managing and coaching this team. No matter what happens in the next three days we will be fine... they somehow always find a way.. on the field and off the field..
Agree.
I feel almost the same way about the next week or so as I do about Game Day Threads...I'm waiting for the posts of "They don't know what they're doing," "They're wasting Brady's final years if they don't surround him with more talent," "Our D is going to be just a shadow of its former self after losing so and so," "No way we win the Conference next year with so and so or without so and so"

The concept sounds good, but from the article you linked, does this really sounds like a Patriots-type of guy?

Notable here is this: Despite the fact that he grew up in Indy and has blossomed as a pro here, Doyle is not expected to offer the Colts’ a hometown discount. His eagerness to gauge the market reflects his willingness to leave if there’s a better offer on the table. In all likelihood, there will be.

....

(As for the speculation of potential landing spots, consider Doyle’s response to a midseason suggestion he’d fit seamlessly into New England’s scheme: “The Patriots? That’s a curse word around here,” he said, sounding every bit the kid who grew up rooting for the Peyton Manning-led Colts.)

Certainly he can get over the Patriots issue if given enough money. But when money is the primary motivation to join a team, the Patriots usually stay far away.

Greg Doyle is playing now?

Pretty sure it's just a series he's doing called "How to Fix X in Y steps."

My biggest worry is just how much cap space EVERY team seems to have....and they HAVE to spend most of it. The ideal is to get to TC with about $10MM left for those moves you make between August and he trade deadline) I think the Pats WANT to pay Hightower $10/yr. I think they will go to $12/yr IF they can get some protection writting into the contract against the fact that Hightower has only played in 75% of the games the last 3 years.

So something to the effect that if he's on the field 16 games, he gets the $12MM, and if not something less. My concern is that with SO much money out there some team needing to make a splash will go to the $13-14MM level and simply price the Pats out of the game.

In the end there is NO question in my mind that the Pats can easily replace Hightower's on field production. (65 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1FF, 0 picks). There were 114 NFL players who had more tackles that Hightower. Christ, former Patfans punching bag Tavon Wilson had 25 more tackles.

The biggest effect of losing Hightower would be the lost of leadership and on field communications. The intangible factors that are really hard to account for. Despite the on field production, he is viewed as, by far, the top LB FA in this class. Personally I think we will be OK if he leaves, but I also believe we will be better if he stays.
I agree with the on field stuff. You're losing a lot of things you can't teach or see on a stat sheet. And, as you've so well submitted, leadership and communication. I, like you and luuked, believe they'll be fine mostly. The staff in NE is just too good. They have a feel for the game similar to what Brady feels about what he sees on the field - fully tuned into what needs to happen. The team, the organization are functioning on a level I don't know this sport has ever seen. It feels like cruise control, though I know they're fully in control.

Now that you say it I will have to prepare a ******** bingo sheet for Thursday when FA opens properly..

This part doesn't sound very Patriot-like, lol.

This is where these escalating salaries get scary. Doyle has been a TE3 and last year had a nice season. But TEs who catch 50-60 passes at 10 ypc have been a dime a dozen and are more related to scheme producing opportunity than being a guy who can elevate your offense. Not a bad player to bring in looking for an upside, but at 7 mill a year, I don't see it.
