52 rush hours start at noon
with 17 own FAs to decide on . and 40 players to fill 90 roster
its gonna be busy for NE

So far reported actions to possibly acquire new players included
DE/DT Jared Odrick - released by JAX
ILB Paul Worrilow - FA from ATL
WR Brandin Cooks - trade w NO

Note to keep in mind: released FAs and players acquired in trades don't count against comp pick equation - so keep an eye on those..

Here a nice reminder from Reiss of how it works..
With '13 as reminder, legal tampering period a defining time for Patriots

I liked Woods when he was coming out in the draft. He'd definitely have some use here with Brady. The money the Browns and 49ers have to spend is insane.
He was my binky. Good speed and separation, without being a burner, great route runner and solid hands. I think his potential is the next level below elite. Not quite AJ, JJ or AB, but still an excellent receiver. Woefully misused at Bills.

Given the emphasis NO suddenly puts on upgrading their defense I'd be surprised if they don't bring Fairley back. Also with the Branch contract apparently heading into the right direction + Valentine/Brown on board I am not sure there is a huge need.

The good thing - and important one to note - is that they don't have to. They have until the end of next four year period 2017-2020 to get above 89% spending mark.

One reason for this enormous cap is exactly the end of previous period - so teams had to carry all surplus cap to this new period.

Expect teams (that can afford to) to save reasonable cap space for next years. Especially the Browns. They will have lots of home grown high picks demanding high contracts to sign in the following years - they would be wise to save as much money as possible . unless they want to start all over again and again..

So the 2017 spending money for many teams is actually much lower than the massive cap numbers above indicate..

You guys prefer this format with 2 days of legal tampering or the old format with all that savagery when the FA period was open and all those news up at every minute?

Well the tampering always happened now it's just official but I prefer the old format, now we already know all the big deals before FA start.

Means all 32 teams will be talking to DH. Hope for the best...prepare for the worst.

How do you guys feel about Cunningham? I remember his name being thrown around last year.

It's unreal what players like Jeffrey and other top FAs will Djax will get. Stupid stupid $$ out there

With BB&co taking advantage of comp picks whenever they can - and with a real possibility to end up with 4 high comp picks in 2018 - a special attention should be paid to trades and especially FAs that don't count against comp pick equation.

1. Here you have the best explanation of how comp pick works - and what FAs qualify by Nick Korte from Over The Cap:
The Basics and Methodology of Projecting the NFL's Compensatory Draft Picks | Over the Cap

Quote:

In order to qualify for the comp equation, a player must have been a true Unrestricted Free Agent whose contract had expired or was voided after the previous season (i.e., he cannot have been released by his old team) ...

These players that qualify are known as Compensatory Free Agents (CFAs). Players who are cut are the most common example of free agents not becoming CFAs, but other methods of disqualification, such as a Restricted Free Agent not given a tender, also exist. In its most general sense, players only become Compensatory Free Agents if they are able to leave their old team against that team’s will. (However, one notable exception are team options that void a contract; see Special Cases below.)

Finally, one each team’s list of CFAs lost and gained are determined and valued, one-to-one cancellations are applied. Cancellations work as follows:
  1. A CFA gained by a team cancels out the highest-valued available CFA lost that has the same round valuation of the CFA gained.
  2. If there is no available CFA lost in the same round as the CFA gained, the CFA gained will instead cancel out the highest-available CFA lost with a lower round value.
  3. A CFA gained will only cancel out a CFA lost with a higher draft order if there are no other CFAs lost available to cancel out.
For a visual representation of how cancellations work, please visit our Compensatory Draft Picks Cancellation Chart to gain a better understanding of this complex process.

2. Here is a list of NE FAs with comp pick potential by Miguel

What's Hightower get and does he stay?

So the Branch talks are going well? Where'd you read that? I'd be angry to see him leave.

Here a quick overview of recently released players (that could be on Pats radar):
RB: Charles, Peterson

Players tendered:
RB Mike Gillislee, BUF -- original round tender (5th)
RB Isiah Crowell, CLE -- 2nd round tender
WR Adam Thielen, MIN -- 2nd round tender

___

Also expect a number of street FAs (players that didn't conclude the season on any team) to be signed to fill 90 TC roster.

__
BTW
The Buffalo Bills announced the release of five players on Monday including CB Nickell Robey-Coleman, K Dan Carpenter, LS Garrison Sanborn, TE Gerald Christian and S Phillip Thomas.

Does anyone know when the deadline is for tendered offers to RFA?

March 9 at 4 pm. Miguel just tweeted it.

After extensive talks of AP, Marshall etc. yesterday
Let's kick this off whit possibly more realistic list by Giardi

____

Reiss was first to propose Woods and Datone Jones here:
Patriots should focus on their own free agents first, then pick their spots

So is Giardi's list pure speculation based on his assessment of the team and their past history, or does he have some inside info?

I'm particularly curious about his comment on Tony Jefferson: "Jefferson is a freak box safety Curious how they felt abt Chung's play" I thought Chung was one of the team's best performers last year, so is he implying he thinks that Pats don't agree?

A good reminder for all of us is to make sure any news is from a legit twitter user and not a fake account.
