NE legal FA tampering watch

So is Giardi's list pure speculation based on his assessment of the team and their past history, or does he have some inside info?

I'm particularly curious about his comment on Tony Jefferson: "Jefferson is a freak box safety Curious how they felt abt Chung's play" I thought Chung was one of the team's best performers last year, so is he implying he thinks that Pats don't agree?

Speculations of course.
They do prefer the term “educated guess“ though..

The money the Browns and 49ers have to spend is insane.

True, but it's not like they just need to shore up a little roster depth to become contenders.

6th most.

Does that include Malcolm who is a RFA?

No I don't think it does.

So for each team we will look at how many snaps they currently need to replace based on free agent status, either unrestricted or street, and just how much space they have to make that happen.

Wow, I wish I could give a "Winner" icon to a thread, because this would earn it. Amazing amount of useful information! Thanks to all.

My two cents:

If you look at the four AFC and NFC finalists from the 2016 season, how is it that the Patriots, who, as some of you might know, actually won the Super Bowl, have more cap space than any combination of two of the other teams (Steelers + Packers, Packers + Falcons, Steelers + Falcons) and only ~$14 million less than all three combined?

That, clearly, is a rhetorical question to which any Pats fan knows the answer and just another reason for them to "hate us 'cause they ain't us."

Thanks, luuked! This made my Tuesday, especially as I brace to hear rumors of an astronomical offer or two that High will get that the Pats likely won't match.

You know.. even if things will look dire during the first few hours of FA just think about who is managing and coaching this team. No matter what happens in the next three days we will be fine... they somehow always find a way.. on the field and off the field..

I know and agree. I've said the same thing. It's just today High is one of my favorite players and I would miss seeing him in the flying Elvis on Sundays, though I'd still tune in to see him from time-to-time wherever he goes.

So today is the day teams can legally talk to FA's. So I guess this is the time when the Jets STOP talking to FA's since they've said it all BEFORE it was legal.

And why NOT tamper. Fraudell has already set the punishment for tampering at $100,000......at least for certain teams.

My biggest worry is just how much cap space EVERY team seems to have....and they HAVE to spend most of it. The ideal is to get to TC with about $10MM left for those moves you make between August and he trade deadline) I think the Pats WANT to pay Hightower $10/yr. I think they will go to $12/yr IF they can get some protection writting into the contract against the fact that Hightower has only played in 75% of the games the last 3 years.

So something to the effect that if he's on the field 16 games, he gets the $12MM, and if not something less. My concern is that with SO much money out there some team needing to make a splash will go to the $13-14MM level and simply price the Pats out of the game.

In the end there is NO question in my mind that the Pats can easily replace Hightower's on field production. (65 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1FF, 0 picks). There were 114 NFL players who had more tackles that Hightower. Christ, former Patfans punching bag Tavon Wilson had 25 more tackles.

The biggest effect of losing Hightower would be the lost of leadership and on field communications. The intangible factors that are really hard to account for. Despite the on field production, he is viewed as, by far, the top LB FA in this class. Personally I think we will be OK if he leaves, but I also believe we will be better if he stays.

I don't want to go through pages of posts to get information.

The old format is fine.

Post about a player.

Here Lombardi “fixes“ Patriots in 5 steps.

Includes keeping Jimmy (Italian connection) signing Butler long-term and ..
sining the best player available regardless of need!

Now who could that be?
Hightower, Campbell..?
