What do we do at CB if Logan Ryan leaves?

Nowadays the base is usually 3 CB's anyway. He had a great 2nd half and playoffs and will get paid as such. I like him but BB will think of something. I was having a heart attack when Revis and Browner left and that worked out okay.

Everyone is so sure he's going to get $10m/year from somewhere? I don't think GMs are THAT stupid. Judging by the posts on this board, I'm one of Ryan's biggest fans here, but it takes about 5 minutes of watching film to realize he's not a number 1. I love having him on the other side though. 8M should keep him here, BB will decide if that's best for the team.

I don't see this as a question of if he leaves, but when and does he sign for enough to get us a 3rd round comp pick.

Don't want him, he alreadychecked out mentally and his body and game were right behind him. I think he has played his last game.

I was just joking. But I guess I didn't do a good enough of a job communicating that.

Why all the hate for Ryan? I think he really picked his game up the 2nd half of the season. He was outstanding in the playoffs. Resign him if possible.

People aren't hating on Ryan they simply realize that he is going to get grossly overpaid in free agency and he will take that $$$$$. I think the Patriots would give him 4/20 but not much more than that, and he will get twice that in free agency.

I have seen a number of comments about bringing him in so I didn't pick up on it.

Shoot, they gave Arrington almost 6m a year, and that was awhile ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they see his value in the 7-8m dollar range. As you said though, it probably won't be enough to keep him here.

We might be able to swing a trade with the Aliquippa Correctional League and pick up Revis. Will the league allow him to play while wearing an ankle tracking device?

Damn, rover ,hes slow enough already and now hes got an ankle tracking device too? can you say 5.5 40?

You're right, if they gave Arrington that much they will go higher than 5 for Ryan, but I still don't think they will come close to what he'll make in free agency.

Ryan deserves a pay raise, but he doesn't deserve anything astronomical. He's solid but not great. He is prone to having stretches of suspect play, and then he has stretches where he shows "shutdown" ability. I feel 2015 showed the extreme high and low you get with him.

I hate that we're likely going to lose him because he could play a number of positions in the secondary and he is a GREAT tackler. I'd even put him ahead of McCourty when it comes to tackling, in fact. He showed that he's decent as a Blitzer and he was awesome in the playoffs mostly. But he outplayed a contract with NE. He'll get paid somewhere and time will tell if it works out for that team. Ultimately, I feel he is replaceable, unlike if we lost someone like Malcolm Butler.

There are a lot of people who work in professional football that are indeed very stupid. Many GMs are definitely that stupid.
We will see. But if there's one thing I think they are starting to figure out, it would be that you better be careful trying to pay pats FAs, they rarely find even equal success elsewhere. Just like some are starting to be paranoid about even trading with BB as he must know something you don't. Long story short I'll go ahead and bet my (no) money that we bring Ryan back for significantly less than 10 per. And I'll be very happy about it.

Last season Hicks signed a massive deal with Chicago based on a half season of productivity with the Pats, after trading for him in season. This year the Pats traded for Eric Rowe and Kyle Van Noy late in the process. What gives you the impression that people don't want to pay Pats players or trade with them? There is actually no evidence of that, in fact just the opposite.

Can J. Jones play corner at all? He was good in college right?

We only have 3 timeouts a half.

That's about how many plays Atlanta averaged per half, right? We could cover those plays with our timeouts.

2yr/$10m w/ $1m bonus and $5m guaranteed is not massive.

Yes. He saw some time out there this year with mixed results. Hes very fast and quick. He might see some more time as a reserve next year. We'll see.

Arrington signed a 4 year $16m deal in 2013 with a salary cap of $123m. Roughly 3.25% of the cap. It is estimated that the 2017 salary cap will be $168m.

If Arrington signed his deal in 2017 then the exact same deal in terms of proportion of the cap would be 4 years $22m. Ryan is a much better player than Arrington in my view, and I would happily pay him more.

A better comparison is say, Leigh Bodden, who signed a 4 year $22m deal in 2010 (uncapped year but there was an unwritten agreement to stay within the salary cap of about $120m). His deal was therefore 4.58% of the cap, and in today's money roughly 4 years $31m.

Now the Patriots probably regret both those deals in retrospect, but in my view Ryan is a better player than both, so his current market worth is as least the value of Bodden's deal, and probably slightly more. Then if you take into account the free agency premium and the lack of corners, you can probably add 10-20% to the price of the deal.

So, I think Ryan is worth about 4 years $34m to the team ($8.5m av), taking into account the rising cap and previous deals.

If you add on a free agency premium of 10%, his final deal would look something like 4 years $37.2m. If you add on 20%, he would make roughly $41m over 4 years.

So that's where I see his deal coming in. Likely too rich for the Patriots - especially as we have to pay Butler soon.

You are correct, my memory of the deal was off. There's still nothing to support the claim made that I was replying too, but I was off on Hicks' deal.
