Incognito suspended indefinitely by Dolphins

When Bruschi did it, it was about $200 per person. At the $30K with 53 players, it's $566 per person. It's not ok. And we're assuming that all 53 players were there..

As Bruschi said, the 30K was excessive.
Hey, numbers don't lie. Using the numbers provided, $30k divided by 6 rookies is a smaller percentage of the minimum income than Bruschi's $1,700 which he claimed he paid on his own based on the minimum income when he was a rook.

I think in this day and age, $5k per rookie is a bit high for the guy making league minimum but if there is a bonus baby in who is making millions, then $5k is perfectly reasonable. It would be like one of us spending $100 on a round of drinks.

I grew out of this sort of behaviour when I was fifteen. I'm really shocked that people are defending this immaturity.

Please show me a single post where someone is defending it.

But to these guys, a $5,000 bill would be like one of us buying a round of drinks. If you were a rookie police officer and the veterans said "ok rookie, we're going to Joe's bar tonight and the first round is on you" are you really going to tell them to go (make sex) with themselves? Really....??!

See my edit. But in answer to your question, there's a big difference between "the drinks are on you" and "you better buy us drinks or we'll make your life a living hell". I'd have no problems with the former but I'd absolutely resist the latter.

If only it was that easy. You would be constantly harassed, disrespected by your teammates and it would hurt your career....

Basically the same as a NYC shop owner getting shaken down by organized crime.

I feel like you are completely misjudging what jock culture is like - especially in football.

Read up on the Standford Prison Experiment and then report back about what a unique and beautiful snowflake you are.

I love you man I'm not trying to hate but it takes a truly heroic human being to stand up against the rest of their peers telling them they have to do something. It's pure hubris to assume you'd be the one guy in the crowd not saluting Hitler. (Godwinned.)

It is very different. Low salaried rookies in the NFL need to hold onto every dollar they earn. Most of them won't make it past their second year in the league, and are then off to teach/coach high school, sell insurance, or some other low salaried position. Remember, most of them didn't get quality college degrees because the football factory schools are allowed to create artificial college experiences for them. The $100,000 or so they can bank (after taxes, agent fees, and dinners for millionaires) is their grubstake in life. A $5,000 bar tab should be a big deal for them.

I've been there (albeit not as a team member), and seen this sort of stuff in action at the professional level. You'd do it.

The whole "I'd just tell them to piss off" mentality is lovely in theory, but doesn't happen in reality. There's a reason for that.

when I did my investment banking stint, we had similar hazing/rites of passage for the 1st year analysts where they would pick up the tab when we went clubbing, be responsible for gathering the girls to the tables, in addition to being the low man on the totem pole at work so doing the mundane spreadsheet stuff etc and all of us went through it. So this is not something exclusive to the NFL. And while I would like to say it never risen above good nature ribbing, that's not true. Sometimes things got quite merciless. So this is not a NFL phenonmenon, anytime you gather a bunch guys in a testosterone charged situation/circumstance there will be this sort of initiation process. and the pressure to conform to it is enormous.

You characterized my point that there is definitely SOMETHING wrong that Incognito did with "So your opinion is that if the Dolphins suspended him then he is guilty of every possible thing being suggested, and we should just stop here and banish him for life, and there is no need to see what he allegedly did, and what the proof is."
As I have said, people are suspended for many reasons. My point was that we do not know the details. For some reason only you can understand you rejected that out of hand. As I said it is not my fault that your position can be extended to a silly argument, even though you want to pretend that is not the case.
If 'he was suspended' is your answer to waiting for facts, then you are implying he must be guilty of any accusation being made.
You are wrong here.

I get your act, Andy - - with your inane position completely ignoring that Incognito's team suspended him indefinitely within hours of seeing the first evidence, you're in the mood to do the John Wensink-skate-over-to-the bench-to-take-on the-entire-team-in-a-fight act.
I wait for facts. That seems to really infuriate you to the point that you want to personally attack me.
That is very immature.

It's cute, but you're clowning now.
Feel free to not read my posts, or at least not act like a child when you do.

Agreed.

How many shop owners in Southie said "go f yourself" to Whitey Bulger shaking them down?

The NFL and the teams should crack down on what is simply extortion.

You don't know WHY the Dolphins suspended Incognito within an hour of viewing the first pieces of evidence?

Gee, maybe it was that he was late for a meeting last week???? Or maybe it was a missed blocking assignment!!!! :D

Dear Lord, Andy, you are putting on a show today!

$5,000 is one percent of their salary for some rookies. So the equivalent for a cop would be a $500 opening round. That's a little rich.

You must have come to this story late, Andy.

The story broke last Tuesday. The Dolphins defended him for 5 days until last evening. There was bad publicity around him and this story for days. If you think "bad publicity" is what caused a "knee jerk" reaction, then you are clowning at this point.

You are clueless on this story.
Seriously you need to slow down, drop your high and mighty attitude and READ.
In no way did I conclude what the reason was. I simple said that we do not know the reason, and offered examples that could conflict with your opinion that you know exactly what happened without even knowing what was in texts or voice mails.
It is very simply. You saw suspended and decided that you are prescient enough to know why, and I said there could be other reasons.
Now you have some kind of childish obsession with arguing about how your guess was right and recreating history to pretend it was the only possiblity.
Move on.

I am utterly shocked by this piece of news. How can a fine upstanding gentleman like Richie Incognito be involved in something like this? I hope he has a good lawyer to sue for these scandalous accusations against his fine and spotless character.

It's essentially a Ponzi/social security scheme, but it's not extortion.

Not until it is revealed, no.
We know that the story was all over the news yesterday, and do not know what pressure they were getting.
We also know that they suspended him shortly after he released a text from Martin. It would certainly be possible that they told him to not address the media, and he did. There are many possiblities.

Gee, maybe it was that he was late for a meeting last week???? Or maybe it was a missed blocking assignment!!!! :D

You do realize that attacking the person you are trying to disagree with is the best way of admitting you know your argument sucks right?

Per multiple sites:

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that in April of 2013, Incognito left a voicemail for Martin saying, “Hey, wassup, you half n—– piece of [expletive] . . . I saw you on Twitter, you been training ten weeks. [I want to] [expletive] in your [expletive] mouth. [I'm going to] slap your [expletive] mouth. [I'm going to] slap your real mother across the face (laughter). [Expletive] you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.”

this thread has more drama than the Dolphin locker room

Per multiple sites:

Could be a damning text. Could be typical teammate bull. Without context around it, it doesn't really mean much. It's a voicemail from April, for crying out loud.
