Slow Your Roll on the Patriots WRs… There's a Long Way to Go

I still don’t know what my post has to do with Gordon.

As for the rules stuff I’m not one of the holier than thou fans but I’m not going to sit here and say that “deflategate” wasn’t a complete witch-hunt. I’m also not going to go down this rabbit hole because in the end of the day I don’t think anything the Patriots have done is any worse than any other team. I think deflategate was Goodell getting a “make up call” and tried to drop the hammer on us to make up for the perception amongst the 31 other fan bases that he went easy on us for Spygate. So you can unbunch your panties now.

I was t that bothered about your comments. You aren’t that important

don't get the Thomas love, he's always been soft, declining numbers, older, and now coming off major surgery
Sure.

But 40 catches and 600 yards is better than what Hogan and Gronkowski gave you last year.

That also doubled what your boy Dorsett gave us last year.

Exactly my point. It's half what Brandon LaFell gave you in 2014.

So long as stays upright, he's a professional enough receiver to get you that kind of stat-line. I don't care how soft or over-the-hill he is. If you're expecting 80 catches and 1600 yards, you're going to be very disappointed.

I do not expect Demaryius Thomas to be a great player but if he is able to learn the system I do not see any reason why he cannot be a solid 3rd WR option. I think the balls will be spread around this year so his numbers may not pop but I could certainly see 35/500 which will be fine if Edelman and Gordon both have the type of years they are capable of.

I'm hoping for 50-60 catches and 700-800 yards, maybe with some from the slot.

Should we expect Thomas to be good for 2 catches a game? That is really the question. Another might be, would I rather have Harris of Dorsett.

please compare the expectations for Thomas, Harry and Myers compared to our 3-4-5.
Hogan 35
Dorsett 32
Patterson 32 (some of these were as a RB)

6 catches a game from the 3-4-5 WR's should be doable.

Edelman and Gordon are back. Edelman had 74 catchers last year, and Gordon had 40. Maybe this will change, but likely not.

CONFESSION
Alright, I guess that I have to give my real reason for preferring 6 WR.

You are right in your arguments. We need 4 WR's. The 5th is simply inactive insurance. We could consider using the PS for that purpose. I think that we all agree that we need the insurance because of Gordon's suspension history and the injuries of others. HOWEVER, as you say, that only supports the need for 5 WR's.

My real reason for wanting to carry 6 WR's is that I don't want to count on an UDFA rookie as my insurance. I believe that insurance should be a veteran, hopefully one who knows the system. Have Myers active or not; that isn't a concern. The 4th active WR gets few reps. Dorsett can start if needed. That is my idea of insurance.

I am always happy to see 1-2 developmental players on the team, who could provide some help in the current season or not, and there is pressure at all in expecting production from a developmental player. So, for me, I think of Myers as one of the last 5 players, who can be of any position, and are there for many purposes.

Or 5 and 2. The 6th wr doesn’t have anything to do with the number of TEs. Having an extra inactive WR is no more relevant if you have 2 or 1 TEs.
But we have other needs with that spot.

I don’t know what he’s got left, but he has been working out.

If you'd just said "a rookie" I might have been on board.

I don't think UDFA matters much at this point, any more than it did for J.C. Jackson vs. Duke Dawson last year.

Also, rookies rarely do much.

A friend and I, at work, were trying to figure this out: who was the last WR to have a great rookie season? Even with eventual greats, a lot of them have merely serviceable rookie seasons.

Does that position have the hardest time adapting to NFL?

And as I like to always note in this forum, so no one jumps to conclusions, I'm genuinely asking and this is not anything else other than curiosity lol.

Michael Thomas? (But I do agree with the point you're making.)

Damn, you're right lol. Guess we started back too far and completely overlooked him haha.
