For instance, the Patriots like Demarcus Ayers. They're paying him $10k/week instead of standard $7,200. He could provide some WR depth and returned a couple of punts for TDs when playing for the Steelers
Ayers returned a couple of punts for TDs with Pittsburgh? I wonder why I don't remember this? Do you know when?

I agree with all you say about him, and keeping him on has been more than worth it up to now, but there is a REASON he has to be on a snap count, and at some point, inevitably, that becomes the reason he has to go. He didn't make it through ONE game. That's worrisome.

I dont, in this case it is not worrisome. He got a knee onto his helmet and got concussed. This is not a soft tissue injury or some kind of broken bone scenario where his body is too fragile to handle the hits. It was a hit that pretty much would have knocked most people out of the game.

Now does he need to be on the field so much ? Right now unfortunately yes because the offense still is in transition. But ideally he gets his snaps limited once things start clicking to preserve him for the end of the year.

AFAIK, Ayers returned a few punts in pre-season games only for the Steelers, most of them as a rookie in 2016 and none for TDs. I don't think he even had any touches in the 2017 pre-season until week-4.

Ayers returned 28 punts for 295 yards and 1 TD in his last college season (Houston, 2015).

OK. (But a coulda-happened-to-anybody argument re this event doesn't change that the way some people move and play, the makeup of their body, their personality as a player, their genetic endowment, their history of injury, their age make them injury-prone. Amendola is that kind of player. I wish it were otherwise - he's been great - but there it is. Plus, he's got models to console him, which will soften the blow.)

It's most likely that Hightower and amendola won't make the trip. What about valentine? Will he be out as well?

Amendola would feast against that Saints defense.

I take this as focused. Others may not.

I'm one of the others.

I take it as being confidence-deficient, on both sides of the LOS, but especially on defense, where the toughness, leadership, and production of not only Hightower, but also of Rob Ninkovich, Jabaal Sheard, and (to a somewhat lesser extent) Chris Long will be missed from what was provided in 2016.

Combine those losses with those on offense from 2016 of Amendola, Edelman (including his inspirational, infectious leadership & clutchness), Mitchell & Martellus Bennett, and there is little wonder why there is a quiet, low-energy locker room today.

a healthy offense would drop 50-60 on this saints defense

Hightower, Amendola, Slater and Valentine officially out.
