Patriots Injury News Mike Reiss Provides Clarity on Jacas' Absence

As gross as this situation has been, this would not be the first time rookie negotiations were messy with a player. Happens sometimes.

Not gonna write this guy’s career off yet here over this deal. Get him signed by camp and get him going. That all being said, we should get a veteran presence on the edge.

People were panicking over Tre Henderson not being here at this time last year. Get Jacas healthy first. If he is missing camp then there will be reason for concern.

"One factor behind #Patriots rookie DE Gabe Jacas’ absence is that he is not being given a standard “participation agreement” by the team, per
@MikeReiss
.“Most draft picks receive such an agreement, which states that if they were to sustain an injury prior to signing their first NFL contract, the team would still be obligated to sign him to a contract based on the slot he was drafted.”

That sounds very shady from the team.

Why do such a thing, just sends bad mojo over the whole team. You picked the guy after clearing him. Do the right thing if this is indeed the case.

Typical Kraft directive of nitpicking over pennies.
It's all so tiresome. The franchise is valued at 9 billion dollars.

We'll have to wait and see how this one plays out, but some thoughts:

1. No need to panic.

2. That said, it seems odd that the team would aggressively trade up for a player with multiple medical issues, then let him get behind on his learning curve.

3. Clearly Jacas shouldn't have been participating in activities if he was post surgical procedure (knee scope) and not physically ready. The other issues (labrum, stress fracture, hamstring) should not have affected him. I'm not sure why he couldn't have been signed and present as a limited participant.

4. If Gabas' medical issues are a factor in his contract negotiations, especially if the Pats are trying to low-ball his guaranteed money, that us bad. Why trade up for a player if you believe he is damaged goods?

My main take from this is a loss of confidence in the Pats' medical team.

Issue might be that there wasn't full disclosure. So perhaps Pats are saying - we'll give you a guarantee, but not if the injury is pre-existing (and perhaps not fully disclosed). And the "participation agreement" would have to spell out exactly what the contract is that he'd get were he to be injured prior to signing, so that can't be signed either.
My guess is the Pats are waiting for a medical before specifying the terms of any guarantee.
