Interesting takes. I don't claim to be I know how this will end, but I think you are both far off on the market for Revis. First of all, teams will want to fully utilize that $6M. Second, I find it highly unlikely he gets a multi-year deal. Why? Teams find him too risky at 31 coming off a terrible year where he acknowledged his body is breaking down, and Revis knows his stock is at an all-time low. If he has a good year, he could get another big contract. He has a habit of betting on himself a year at a time, especially when his stock is low. I think he wouldn't want a deal where the team controls him for years at a relatively low cost. He signed a the deal with the Patriots to set himself up for the monster deal with the Jets, after the Tampa Bay experiment devalued him.

I think that the Jets contract situation will naturally lends itself to end game of a minimum one year deal for the reasons listed above. Revis gets it...he understands what the $6M guarantee means, which is that the veterans minimum makes sense for everyone this season, as it won't change his bottom line income in the slightest.

    Also, this:

Report: Revis willing to play for veteran's minimum

Also @JetFan79 , I am sure if he actually did get a deal similar to the one you laid out, it would involve a structure where his 2017 salary is the veterans minimum. It just doesn't make sense for any team to pay him a dime over that amount for the 2017 season.

And this is where my ignorance of how complex NFL contracts work, comes into play.

However I have to imagine if the JETS were smart enough to put in this clause of any other payments from 2017 coming off the 6mil the Jets owe, I'd have to imagine they thought of the situation you're describing.

I mean of course any team signing Revis would love to take advantage of it. Say Revis' value was 6mil per for 3 years. 18 million total. Ok so the obvious thing would be to instead pay 1mil the first year and then 12mil the remaining two years. Save 5mil and let the Jets pay it.

But again, that would seem like a really easy/obvious trick to plan for in the contract. Instead I imagine they take the average of the contract. Though I obviously don't know that for sure, just a guess.

And I don't think Revis is dumb enough to play on a one year deal for free without any guarantee of money after that. A team could use him for basically nothing and then just drop him.

Again that 6mil from the Jets is a nice selling point for Revis to find a new home. It'll help a bit, but not quite as much as I think you'd like.

If what I think is the case, imagine Pitt giving him a 3 year 12mil deal. Or at least that's what they would have given him. Now the Jets 6mil comes into play. So instead Pitt gives Revis a deal for 3 years @3mil per. Revis still gets his 12mil total cause the Jets would be on the hook for 3mil in 2017 as well.

So it's sort of this one time bonus Revis can offer to teams that will give him a decent deal. Why would he waste that on a one year deal and allow the team to dump him after?

You don't sign someone who has disrespected you and your organization.
Mevis is such a dink he sent his Mommy to pick up his ring because couldn't face the boys after his wine laced tirade on social media. Everyone rolled their eyes when Revis offered up 'I can't make the ring dinner because I scheduled a trip to Disney at the very same time'. Revis lives in Florida and can take the kids to Disney 24/7/365. The Patriots don't need him and won't sign him and that's a good thing. Let Revis try to rebuild his tattered reputation somewhere else.

Sure you do. Let's say BB believes Revis can contribute & they win it all with the help of a rejuvenated player. (For the record, I think he's done, but I gladly defer to BB if he brings Revis back)

Let's see then..... "disrespect" and a SB. No brainer. Who the hell cares about disrespect ? What is disrespect ? Is BB in the business of respect & feelings or winning ?

I watch my fav team & cheer for wins. Championships. Not feelings, unicorns, and disrespect. Winning is everything here. These people are not our friends. I don't have to like Revis' comments to LOVE winning.

Talk about a freezing cold take. This is the easiest non-move the Pats will make this off-season.

So if he plays for vet minimum - whatever that is, say $600,000 and the Jets have to pay $5.4 million, you are happy? :) Really? :) Edit: assuming he is in shape and plays OK

It isn't necessarily about respect or disrespect, but BB cares a great deal about the lockerroom impact. And he's traded away talented guys who are becoming locker room cancers. We weren't a more-talented offense by trading away Moss, just as we weren't a more-talented defense by trading away Collins.

What if we keep Butler, and Mevis infects him with selfishness? Or a guy like Edelman or Solder sees that Mevis has taken care of his own business first above the team, and treat negotiations like that too?

As BB says, we're building a team, not collecting talent. So if Mevis can prove he is a part of the TEAM, fine. But he's done nothing close to that so far, so let's not pretend it's as simple as adding a player like in Madden. That's not how reality works, and while you may not think about those things, I can guarantee the FO does.

Nothing ? In 2014 he shut up & played. I think he is done. But if BB thinks there is something left, a few sentences uttered in the past won't deter him. He had even insulted BB before 2014. No worries. Just win.

Yeah. Vet minimum for him would be 1 million. That's better than not getting the 1 million back. What do I care if he's on a couch or playing for another team?

But if he plays I'd bet it'll be more.

Too much loot, pherein. Sherman would cost what, 14m dollars a year? Combine that with Gilmore (13) and McCourty (11-12m in 2018) and you'd be looking at 40m dollars a year tied up by three players.

I think if Revis were *really* willing to play for 1m dollars a year, there would be plenty of teams lining up to have him as part of their CB depth chart.

It's obvious that Revis cannot excel on an island any longer, but what does he look like when given safety help? Or what does he look like as your CB4-5 on a basement deal?

Edit: Not meaning to respond to something else you said without addressing your original comment, and while I can agree with bumping any compensation down to around 5m a year, I still stand by my thinking that he'll get a better deal than most here feel he will. For one year, of course. Maybe two.

That because you idiots in NE dont know how to handle CAP. We can get Loomis up there for a day and set things right so Sherman can get 25m with 20m guaranteed. Sherman will be there tomorrow.
These guys need gameboys, xboxes, pools usually more than one, and decked out golded trimmed RV's to play professionally, shesh, so sad. I feel for you.
What do you do with 40m left over in CAP anyways? Lobster cant be that exspensive now.

We will agree to disagree. There are lots of precedents of BB protecting the locker room culture, and no instances of BB taking on guys who have openly accused the team of cheating. Guys can be critical of him, we have seen that before and he lets it go. But publicly calling out the program as cheaters? Hasn't happened.

At the end of the day, neither of us can be certain how BB feels about it. But his actions certainly haven't suggested anything like you're proposing, and reality is about more than Gatorade ads or Nike slogans.

Why would we pay Sherman 10-11m for 2 years if we only offer Butler 7-8m. I can't overstate the good old quote that we are not collecting talent but building a team.
