Kind of Jets related here…how do you trade two first round picks for a guy when you‘re not close to meeting his extension requirements?

I liked Adams, but this was one hell of a trade for the Jets.

With two picks in the 20s, they’ll likely get the equivalent of one top 10 pick (value likely to be in the 7-10 range.) They gave up a player who was drafted 6th overall, already was a 2X all-pro at age 24 and league’s best at his position. I wouldn’t say they got a bad deal but didn’t get some huge return on value either.

You're forgetting not having to deal with the massive headache, and the extra cap space.

That trade allowed us to grab AVT to upgrade the weakest spot on oline (LG) in this past draft. Not to mention spending decently in free agency too (Lawson, Davis, Cole, Moses...).

Next year the Jets currently have 60mil in cap space and two 1st round picks again.

Given they were in NO spot to be a "win now" team at the time, it was a great trade imo.

Well, that’s the whole thing, isn’t it? Is AVT any good? He’s projected to be good, which isn’t the same thing. Jets traded in a proven superstar for two draft picks that are question marks.

As for cap space, sure…I guess if Adams wasn’t worth it, why extend him? Makes sense, except that they still had two seasons left on his bargain rookie deal, so it wasn’t an issue of having to break the bank just then.

But they’ve broken the bank so many times in recent years on FA busts (Trumaine Johnson, Leveon Bell). They’re always so hesitant to pay a lot for their own players then go out and desperately outbid themselves for shiny new objects.

Fair points. Not paying their own guys seems overblown though. Recently it's been mostly Dlinemen and Adams. But the Jets kept drafting great dlinemen, so they just went with the younger guys and let the expensive vets walk.

Adams? I mean, we have Maye as well who's also top notch. A team with this many holes (at that time anyway), couldn't afford to pay two top safeties.

AVT? Yeah... verdict obviously is still out. But a Guard drafted in the mid-1st round. Ha, he better be good.

Proving that even a broken clock is right twice a day, the Jets didn't entirely f*ck up when they made that trade.... though I did not track who they actually drafted with the picks so maybe it will be the modern day equivalent of Kyle Brady and Sam Darnold....

What’s all this about cap space and couldn’t afford?

First, no reason you can’t pay two safeties. Seahawks did it with Thomas and Chancellor. Maye is a FS and Adams is a SS.

But back to the cap…they just paid:

$15M per year for Carl Lawson, a guy who has 11.5 sacks in three seasons since he had a nice rookie year and then an ACL injury.

$12.5M per year for Corey Davis, a guy who was disappointing in Tennessee overall but who flashed at times and was very good in 2020. Overall though a high #1 receiver price tag for a guy known for not playing up to his talent.

So, two expensive FA signings, neither of whom are likely to be elite...rather than signing Adams, who is elite.

Plenty of reason not to pay 2 safeties big money. Simply, it's not one of the high value positions.

Seattle could have been a "win now" team. So that quick upgrade may have been worth it to them. The Jets?... obviously in a much different position.

Lawson n Davis? DE and WR are both high value positions, and while they may not be elite (top 5 in respective positions overall), early returns look very good.

WR last year... Crowder, and then crap. Needed a solid #1.

DE? No real outside rush last few years. Just great run stuffers and inside pressure. Lawson (and switching to 4-3) changes the entire dynamic of the defense. Likely suffering a bit on run D, but a massive upgrade in pass rush.

Well they got two 1st rounders.

This year they used it to trade up for AVT (plus 2 3rd rounders). We'll see what they get next year.

Lawson has had 5 sacks each the last two seasons. Top 5? I’m not sure he’s top 30. Massive upgrade? Lol…

I don’t know…I think I’d take the best SS in the NFL over a pass rusher coming off a major injury and three down years. The Jets overpaid so much for this guy.

If that's your honest view of Lawson... you look at stats too much.

Or at least some stats. You're missing the fact he was #2 in the league on QB pressures or hits (I forget which). Now imagine that next to Quinnen Williams who gets great inside pressure.

Other than the oline upgrades, that right side of the dline is the thing I'm most excited to see this season. And the left side of the dline are no slouches either.

Current PFF dline rankings...

7. NEW YORK JETS

The Jets were not a good football team in 2020. But they did have several promising seasons from young defensive linemen, namely Quinnen Williams, Folorunso Fatukasi and John Franklin-Myers. Those three all finished among the top 35 interior defenders in the NFL in overall grade last season.

New York proceeded to add Sheldon Rankins, Vinny Curry and Carl Lawson to the group in free agency, placing an emphasis on improving the unit. Lawson should provide much-needed pass-rushing ability off the edge. No edge defender graded higher as a pass rusher on true pass-rushing snaps than him in 2020.

Looks like White might be making a case for himself in the Jete QB battle. Hopefully Coach Bim Saleh Bim has an open mind on who starts the season behind center.
He’ll have White over for Halloumi, Fattoush, and Falafel and they’ll smoke hookah afterward to help him make the decision.

How many of these is that for you now?

Tunescribe does not like you JF79...I know you're a Jete fan and all but even YOU should have figured this out by now....well...then again, maybe not
