CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Led by three interceptions, the Patriot defense suffocated the Carolina Panthers, while third string quarterback Tom Brady tossed a touchdown pass to David Patten, leading the Patriots to a 23-8 exhibition win Saturday night.
Ty Law, Antwon Harris and Leonard Myers each had interceptions, as the Patriot defense swarmed all over Carolina tonight. The defense showed a great deal of team speed, as the Panthers could get nothing going on offense until late in the third quarter when the third unit for the Patriots was in the game.
Adam Vinatieri kicked three field goals tonight, and J.R. Redmond scored on a one-yard touchdown run to provide the rest of the scoring for the Patriots. Redmond’s fourth-quarter score featured linebacker Bryan Cox as the lead blocker on the play.
The Patriots were into their seventh straight quarter without allowing a point, until the Panthers struck in the third quarter. Carolina drove 71 yards, featuring passes from rookie QB Chris Weinke to Wesley Walls for 16 yards and to Steve Smith for nine yards. A 34-yard run off right tackle by Chad Dukes put the Panthers at the Patriot 3, and Nick Goings ran it in for the score on the next play. Weinke hit Jim Turner for a two-point conversion.
The Patriots are 2-0 in the preseason and play at Tampa Bay next Saturday.
