The $6.8M number is irrelevant to the choice of whether to keep/cut Amendola. What matters is $4M, which is the amount saved by cutting him. And $1.4M, which is the amount saved on next year's cap if you cut him this year and avoid taking a dead cap hit then.

To be completely accurate, that 1.4 is simply pushed from this year's dead cap to next, so it isn't "saved", simply reallocated, which is a choice the Pats may make: cut him after June 1 if no new deal is reached, and spread the dead cap over two years rather than one.

In all seriousness, it's something they need to consider if:

1. Amendola refuses to restructure his deal.

2. There is an option on the market they like better (Gordon, if a miracle happens, or Washington, etc).

3. Both.

I'm thoroughly in the camp that would much rather prefer to restructure Amendola. When he's healthy, he brings a dynamic to the offense that compliments what Edelman does very well. The issue is that he hasn't been healthy in any season since he's been here and his production doesn't warrant his current cap hit. Now the team has a redundancy in place with Hogan as well. Let's just say I would not be shocked at all to see the team bring him back to the table to lower that cap hit and that I wouldn't be shocked to see them cut him if he refuses.

They played different positions. With that said DA has been good 2 of 3 years and LaFell has been good 1 of 2.

I think the following observations are both fair and compatible:

1. The Patriots are currently a team with 4 'viable' WRs (Edelman, Hogan, Martin, Amendola), but only one legitimate top 2 WR (Edelman)
2. The Patriots have room on the roster for one more WR before Amendola's spot really becomes an issue
   
3. Amendola's been a pretty big disappointment, but he's been a nice player when fully healthy
   
4. Amendola's been a disappointment precisely because he is who most of us thought he was
5. Amendola's a nice insurance policy/WR4, but simply cannot be relied upon as a core guy
6. Amendola's knowledge of the system is a plus factor
   
7. The team just signed a guy who should be capable of filling a fair amount of Amendola's role
8. If the team can't find a true middle-deep threat, there's really no need to ditch Amendola
   
9. Given the presence of Edelman and Hogan, Amendola's money would be better spent if the team could use it on a true middle-deep threat
10. Amendola's not being paid crazy money
    
11. The team currently does not need Amendola's money

Looking at it that way, I don't see any current need for the Amendola domino to fall, unless the Patriots bring in 2 WRs who are clearly going to make the roster and, if they do that, at least one of the two needs to be a legit field stretching middle-deep threat.

I would hate to see it happen and I hope they work something out because he's a good player and he's really clutch however it wouldn't be "shades of Welker" because they have Edelman and my biggest concern with losing Welker was that it would deprive Brady of the safety valve allowing him to unload in under 2 seconds and lead to serious beatings. Ultimately I was a wrong about Welkers market value and Belichick was right and made the right move. I think Amendola is making more than he is worth and would like to see a new deal but after taking a serious pay cut last year I'm not sure be would do it again. Hopefully they Can find common ground and a fair deal for both sides because I think Amendola is a good player who provides big plays at key moments and fall insurance if Edelman goes down.

Amendola also has a 6 million dollar salary for 2017 that he is never going to see. Hopefully they restructure and lower his salary.

Its the right thing to do. He has Brady's confidence. Hes good on PRs. Goof 4th option in the offense. Just need to find that right pay/cap balance.

I think they are above average. 25 to 35 catches is average. DA has had some big plays in big moments for this team. We'll disagree and move on.

Keep in mind he finished #1 in PR average last year.
