re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

BB: "Hi Ed, it's Bill Belichick..."

Ed Reed: "I'm on the next thing smokin to Foxboro, coach"

BB: "Great" (hangs Up) Hmm time to cut Verone, no wait, Tiquan, no wait, I got it..

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Surprised people don't want him here most likely he will play a complimentary rule rather than a major every down role..and with gregory out thw next wfew weeks why not?

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Go get em Bill.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

God! Ed Reed really is homeless now!

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

"Hi, may I speak with Ed ?"

BB doesn't need permission to speak with anyone.

"Hi, give the phone to Ed for I am better than you"

'cause he's done - even some Ravens fans say he was done last season.

Wouldn't be shocked at all if BB brought him in though!

The pros are obvious. We all know of the positives, so I wouldn't be shocked if it were explored, although I think I would be surprised on some level.

Some of the cons and concerns are:

--it may take him awhile to learn the defense, especially in the role of the secondary. He may not even end up seeing much time

--Gregory isn't really supposed to miss too much time, as was given a "few" week time period after the Steeler game. It will already be 15 days between games from PIT to CAR, due to the bye week. The reality is that he probably shouldn't miss more than a game or two, so the whole "missing Gregory" issue may be somewhat overblown. Only Belichick knows if Reed could contribute next weekend in the DEN game, but the jury is still out in the court of popular opinion

--Many feel that Ed Reed just isn't the same player due to the age, injured hip factor. We just cut the #33rd overall draft pick due to a bad hip, and already have our top CB sitting out the past 5 weeks due to his bad hip issue. Pretty soon we can just have them out there with their walkers with tennis balls on the bottom, with all of these hip issues

--We just took 2 top round safeties in the past 2 drafts, in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Unless they see increased reps, we probably aren't going to be able to reasonably expect any improvement. No one wants to see T.Wilson out there, but it would appear that Belichick is somehow okay with keeping him, or else he'd likely have brought someone else in (although I believe we have a safety on the practice squad)

--This is an optimal time to see Harmon gain some live reps and experience in the system. It's difficult to know how dire the need may be in the draft or free agency next spring, unless we know Harmon's potential and ability to actually play

The Most Interesting Coach in the World: Players answer the phone even when he doesn't call.

So not one team put in a waivers claim for him? Wow...

The talking heads on ESPN (specifically Mortenson) just gave it a "25% chance."

Maybe he's worth it for the vet minimum.

Why are you surprised?

No sane team would pay him $400K+ per game he plays.

Now that he's a FA, the phone will start ringing with lowballers...

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Didn't Reed blame his injury last year on Brady? Could be some bad blood remaining that could sway things if he has multiple offers.

27m Albert Breer ? @AlbertBreer
Ed Reed unclaimed on waivers. So the Texans swallow the full boat, all $6 million they guaranteed him back in March.

Wow.

So he gets the $6 million PLUS whatever another might pay him going forth? Nice double dip if that occurs.

Yep. It was also the primary reason why nobody in their right mind would have claimed him off waivers.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

The more I think about it, the more I think Ed Reed is a bad fit:

  • He was a below average safety last year and horrible this year.
  • He is a locker room lawyer. He campaigned against Harbaugh in Baltimore. Called out Wade Phillips publicly in Houston. Not a leader.
  • He is redundant since he plays McCourty's position and not Gregory's. Gregory is better than him, but injured. McCourty is worlds better than him.
  • He will likely be a problem unless the Pats make him a starter (he just shot his way out of town in Houston because of that reason).

Ed Reed is no longer Ed Reed that we remember. He might be a good 10-20 snaps a game type of player, but he refuses to accept that is his skill level anymore. I think the Pats should pass on him. And early indication is they will.

It also says something that the Texans would be willing to eat that salary while cutting him. That tells me that no matter the cost, they wanted no more part of him.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Reed's excellence was a function of two things: amazing instincts and superior closing speed. The instincts may not matter if the speed is gone.

Calling out the coaching staff of a 2-7 team to the media no doubt had a lot to do with that.
